For a new player, choose Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition if you want one purchase containing the updated game and its downloadable content. Choose the original release if established stability, the legacy Steam Workshop, or an existing mod setup matters more than refreshed presentation and new content. The decision is not completely one-sided: launch coverage for Complete Edition reports bugs, graphical problems and poor performance, while the original has a mature PC build and a long-established mod ecosystem.
What “remaster” means in this comparison
SEGA’s official name is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition, not “Shogun 2 Remastered.” In practical terms, it is the updated and enhanced PC edition of the 2011 strategy game, developed by MATABOO, Creative Assembly and SEGA. SEGA describes it as “an updated and enhanced version of SHOGUN 2 and all of its DLC in one complete package.” Players commonly use “remaster” as shorthand for this release, but it is important to understand what is and is not being promised: Complete Edition is a new PC package with presentation, audio, content and platform changes, not evidence of a wholly rebuilt game engine or a guaranteed performance upgrade on every computer.

The original remains a separate, playable PC version. Its standalone Steam listing was scheduled to stop accepting new purchases on 28 September 2026, but owners retain access. Steam purchasers of Complete Edition receive the original game and its downloadable content as well, according to SEGA’s launch announcement. That makes the new package unusually relevant even for players who want to keep the older build available.

Who should choose Complete Edition?
Start here if you are new to the game
Complete Edition is the simplest entry point for a first-time player. It packages the base game and all DLC instead of requiring you to identify which expansions, campaigns or faction packs are missing. The package also includes the refreshed presentation, full Japanese voice acting and additional playable minor factions reported at launch. If you are buying after the original’s standalone Steam sale has ended, Complete Edition is the officially supported way to obtain the current package rather than assembling an older edition from scattered keys or bundles.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from 9 different clans and compete online and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation
- Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents
- Improved land and naval battle gameplay, now with the ability to combine forces and attacks
There is a practical ownership advantage as well: SEGA says Steam buyers of Complete Edition receive the original game and its DLC. You can therefore begin with the updated release while retaining access to the legacy version for situations in which an old save, mod or campaign behaves better there. Treat that dual access as a useful fallback, not as proof that every file, save or mod transfers cleanly between the two versions.
Choose it when presentation and extra factions matter
The updated edition is aimed at players who want a fresher presentation rather than a strictly historical replay of the 2011 PC build. Full Japanese voice acting can make the campaign and battle narration feel more consistent with the setting, while the additional minor factions add variety to campaign selection. These are meaningful improvements for a new campaign, especially if you have never played the original and do not have a pre-existing mod list.
Accept the launch risk
Complete Edition’s principal drawback is maturity. Windows Central reported more than 1,850 Steam reviews shortly after launch, alongside complaints about bugs, performance and graphical issues. GamesRadar reported overwhelmingly negative early Steam reception and additional performance complaints. Those reports describe the launch window, not a definitive lifetime result: the available evidence does not establish a final post-patch benchmark or a settled long-term review score. If you are comfortable waiting for fixes, checking current reports and adjusting settings, the package may become the better long-term choice. If you need a dependable campaign tonight, the original is the safer bet when you already own it.
Who should stay with the original?
Mod users should treat the editions as separate ecosystems
The strongest reason to use the original is its legacy mod support. SEGA’s FAQ states that Complete Edition launches with integrated Mod.io support and that mods from the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Complete Edition. This is not a matter of copying a folder, changing a load order or subscribing again. A Steam Workshop mod built for the original may depend on the old executable, file paths, data formats or scripting assumptions, so installing it in the new edition is unsupported and may fail to load or destabilize the game.
Rank #2
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Keep the original if your campaign depends on a particular overhaul, visual pack, interface change, map, unit roster or total-conversion project. You can experiment with Complete Edition’s Mod.io catalog separately, but do not assume an equivalent Mod.io version exists. Before switching, record your active mod list and campaign setup; use that record to check whether each project has an explicitly rebuilt Complete Edition release.
Established saves and familiar behavior favor the original
A long-running campaign, a carefully tuned graphics configuration or a reliable multiplayer routine is a reason to avoid changing versions mid-project. Even when both editions contain the same broad strategy game, they are separate builds with different platform integrations. Finish an important campaign on the version that created its saves, and keep a backup of the save folder before testing the other edition. Do not overwrite a working installation while troubleshooting the new one.
Use it when launch stability is your priority
The original has been available since 2011 and has accumulated a much larger review history; Windows Central cited more than 22,000 Steam reviews for it. That does not make every installation perfect, and older PC games can still encounter driver, display-scaling or mod conflicts. It does mean that its common failure modes and fixes are better known than those of a release only recently reviewed by players. For a machine that is close to the recommended hardware threshold, or for a player with little time to troubleshoot, the established build is the conservative choice.
What you actually get in Complete Edition
One package for the base game and downloadable content
Complete Edition’s defining feature is scope: the base game and all DLC are combined in one PC edition. That removes the most common purchase ambiguity surrounding older strategy games—whether a faction pack, campaign expansion or smaller add-on was omitted. The original remains useful for owners who already have a particular DLC entitlement, but a new buyer should compare the complete package rather than assume an old standalone listing is still available.

- Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
- Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode.
- Developed according to Sun Tzu's principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyzes its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
- A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents - each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials
Refreshed presentation and Japanese voice acting
Launch materials describe refreshed visuals and full Japanese voice acting. “Refreshed” should not be read as a promise that every texture, animation or interface element has been remade. The documented claim is an updated presentation, so expect the same core campaign and battle design viewed through a revised PC release. If authentic-language audio is important to you, Complete Edition has a clear advantage over the original release as described in the launch coverage.
Additional playable minor factions
Launch coverage reports additional playable minor factions. These broaden campaign choice, but the available information does not establish a complete faction-by-faction list or explain whether every addition is available in every campaign mode. Check the in-game campaign selection screen and the current edition notes for the exact roster before buying for one specific faction.
Mods: what transfers, what does not, and how to decide
Original Steam Workshop mods do not transfer
SEGA’s wording is explicit: because Complete Edition uses integrated Mod.io support, mods from the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible. A Steam Workshop subscription is tied to the original ecosystem; it is not a universal entitlement shared by both executables. Unsubscribe or disable the old mod profile only after you have confirmed that your original campaigns still open, and never test an unconverted mod on a save you cannot replace.
Use this migration checklist
- Inventory the original setup. Write down every Workshop item, load order, launcher option and custom file you use.
- Separate saves from mods. Copy campaign saves and configuration files to a safe location before installing or launching the other edition.
- Check for an explicit port. A mod is suitable only when its author or current Mod.io listing identifies Complete Edition support.
- Test without modifications. Launch a new, unmodded campaign first. Confirm that the base installation works before adding converted content.
- Add one mod at a time. If a crash or visual problem appears, the last addition is the first suspect.
If a favorite project has no Complete Edition version, your practical choices are to keep playing it on the original, wait for a community port, or start an unmodded campaign in Complete Edition. There is no supported compatibility layer that makes every legacy Workshop mod work automatically.

Performance and bugs: how much weight should launch reviews carry?
What the early reports establish
Windows Central and GamesRadar reported launch-window complaints involving bugs, graphical issues and performance. The early Steam reception was described as overwhelmingly negative by GamesRadar, while Windows Central contrasted more than 22,000 reviews for the 2011 original with more than 1,850 reviews for Complete Edition shortly after launch. These figures show the scale and tone of early player feedback, not a controlled comparison on identical hardware.
What they do not establish
No authoritative post-launch benchmark in the available material proves how Complete Edition performs after patches, across different graphics cards or at a particular resolution. Do not treat the launch review ratio as a permanent performance verdict, and do not assume that a later patch has solved a specific issue unless the developer’s current notes or reproducible testing confirms it.
A sensible first-launch procedure
- Install the latest graphics driver offered for your card and restart the PC.
- Launch Complete Edition with default settings and no mods.
- Play a short skirmish or new campaign long enough to observe loading, menus and a battle.
- If you see crashes or severe stutter, lower demanding visual options one at a time and retest so you know which change helped.
- Verify the game files through your PC storefront before reinstalling; a damaged file can mimic a performance problem.
- Record your graphics card, processor, memory, resolution, frame-rate limit and error message when seeking support. Those details are more useful than a general statement that the game is “slow.”
Keep the original installed, when you own it, until Complete Edition completes this baseline test. That preserves a working way to play while you determine whether the new build suits your hardware.

Not as a new standalone purchase after 28 September 2026, according to SEGA’s official product information. The end of standalone sales does not revoke ownership: players who already own the original can continue to download and play it. Complete Edition is the current purchase route described by SEGA, and Steam purchasers receive the original game and its DLC with that package.
Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
Be careful with third-party listings that use phrases such as “Complete Edition PC.” The title is specific, but a listing may be a digital key, boxed copy or bundle, and availability can vary by country. Confirm the edition, activation platform, included DLC and regional redemption rules before paying. Do not assume that an old key grants the new edition, or that a listing promising the original standalone game is still an official Steam sale.
Decision guide by player profile
| Your situation | Recommended version | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You have never played SHOGUN 2 and want every official add-on. | Complete Edition | It is the current package containing the base game and all DLC, with refreshed presentation, Japanese voice acting and reported minor-faction additions. |
| You own the original and rely on Steam Workshop mods. | Original | Legacy mods are not compatible with Complete Edition’s Mod.io-based system. |
| You own the original but play it unmodded and want the new presentation. | Try Complete Edition, keep the original installed | You can compare the updated build while retaining the older version as a fallback. |
| Your PC is sensitive to new-release performance problems. | Original, if already owned | Complete Edition has launch complaints and no confirmed final benchmark in the available evidence. |
| You care most about full Japanese voice acting or additional minor factions. | Complete Edition | Those features are part of its reported launch feature set. |
| You need a specific old save or overhaul campaign. | Original | Keep the save with the build and mod environment that created it. |
Bottom line for common questions
Is Complete Edition worth it?
It is the better starting purchase for most newcomers because it consolidates the game and DLC and adds the documented presentation, audio and faction updates. Its value is conditional on your tolerance for launch risk: early reports identify bugs, graphical issues and performance complaints, and there is not yet an authoritative long-term benchmark to settle those concerns.
Do original mods work in the remaster?
No. SEGA says Complete Edition’s integrated Mod.io support makes original SHOGUN 2 mods incompatible. Use the original for legacy Workshop projects unless a creator has produced a separate, explicitly supported Complete Edition version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould an existing owner replace the original?
Not automatically. Keep the original for established saves, mods and known stability. Add Complete Edition when its updated presentation or extra content is worth testing on your hardware; owning both versions is the least disruptive approach when your purchase provides both.
