Toronto’s 2026 municipal election sign period began October 1, allowing candidates to display signs ahead of election day on October 26. A sign on private property needs the owner’s or occupant’s consent; public-road-allowance signs must meet placement, spacing and consent rules. Signs must be removed within 72 hours after voting ends.
Toronto’s election sign period is open
The City of Toronto announced on September 29 that municipal election candidates could begin putting up signs on Thursday, October 1. The City describes the display period as starting 25 days before election day. Toronto’s 2026 municipal election is scheduled for October 26.
The start of the permitted period does not establish how many signs are up, how many candidates are using them or whether signs have changed voter behaviour. It marks when candidates may display them under the City’s rules.
Where can an election sign go?
On private property
A lawn or fence sign on private property requires the consent of the property owner or occupant. A resident should ask before putting up a sign if they do not own or occupy the property.

On a public road allowance
Toronto permits signs in specified public-property settings, subject to restrictions. Placement on a public road allowance also requires consent from the owner or occupant of the property abutting that location. Signs must be at least one metre apart unless the appropriate owner or occupant consents to closer spacing.

- At least 1.5 metres from a curb or the edge of pavement.
- At least 0.6 metres from either side of a sidewalk.
- At least 15 metres from an intersection or pedestrian crossover of a collector or arterial road.
The City also restricts signs at local-road intersections and prohibits them on medians and islands or adjacent to voting places, City parks and City-operated facilities. Signs must not obstruct sightlines for pedestrians, cyclists or motorists, and they cannot be attached to trees.
Size, height and display exceptions
Under the City’s general limits, an election sign may not exceed 1.2 square metres in area or two metres above ground level. The City lists exceptions for certain advertising spaces and for indoor, window and balcony displays. It also prohibits illumination except in the stated advertising-space exceptions. These exceptions do not remove other applicable restrictions.

What a sign must show
The candidate’s name must be clear and legible. Ontario’s 2026 municipal candidates’ guide says campaign advertising must identify who is responsible for it. Candidates and campaigns should make sure signs satisfy both requirements.
When signs must come down
Election signs must be removed within 72 hours after voting ends on election day. Toronto lists a $200 penalty for failing to remove a sign within that period. The City also lists a $200 penalty for displaying a sign before the permitted period begins.

How to report a sign that may break the rules
Toronto’s election-sign guidance directs residents to contact 311 and submit a service request. The City’s instructions ask for the sign’s location and the reason for the complaint; check the live City guidance for the current reporting steps.
How supporters can get a lawn sign
The City’s election guidance lists “where can I get a lawn sign?” as a sample question for candidates’ campaigns. It is not an indication that the City distributes signs. Supporters can ask the candidate or campaign they want to support whether signs are available and where they may be placed lawfully.
