Chunsoft’s 1993 spin-off brought Rogue-like, turn-based dungeon runs to a console audience and established a format later entries could adapt to other heroes and settings. Torneko is the series’ first protagonist—not its sole inventor.
What is Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon?
The original game, released in 1993, is the first entry in the Mystery Dungeon series. Chunsoft built it around Torneko, the shopkeeper from Dragon Quest IV, rather than a conventional warrior or chosen hero. Nintendo’s publisher description neatly captures the contrast: “He’s Not a Hero. He’s a Merchant. And He’s Here to Close the Deal.” Nintendo UK’s listing identifies the international edition and describes its premise.

That unusual choice helped make the game a useful starting point for a series built to travel. Torneko’s goal and shopkeeping identity fit a loop of finding goods, surviving a dangerous expedition, and bringing the spoils home. Game Developer’s history of the series describes Chunsoft’s 1993 game as an adaptation of elements from older Rogue-style PC games for console players. That makes Torneko an important early figure in console dungeon crawlers, not the person who invented roguelikes.
Why is Torneko called the “father” of Mystery Dungeon?
“Father” is a lineage metaphor: Torneko was the first protagonist through whom the series established its core approach. The 1993 game showed how randomized, turn-based dungeon exploration could work as a console adventure, giving later Mystery Dungeon games a pattern to reshape around different characters and worlds.

The metaphor is separate from Torneko’s family in the story. Square Enix’s official announcement describes him as the merchant also seen in Dragon Quest IV, who aims to become the world’s greatest weapons merchant. It identifies Nene as his wife and Poporo as their son.
How does the original game’s dungeon loop work?
Each expedition takes place in a dungeon whose layout, items, and monsters change from one entry to the next. The game is turn-based: when Torneko takes a step, enemies get a turn to move. You fight, gain experience, gather equipment, and decide whether to press deeper in search of treasure.

Defeat is a substantial setback. The items collected on that run are lost, and the next attempt starts at level one on the first floor. Nintendo’s listing sums up the tension with the publisher-provided heading “Every decision matters. No safety nets.”
Not all progress disappears with a failed run. Items Torneko brings back safely help expand his shop, which can then store more equipment for future expeditions. The result is a push and pull between short-term risk in a randomized dungeon and longer-term progress at home.

Can you still play the original?
The 2026 remaster is the current official route documented across the product pages: its platforms and regional listings are set out above. The historical original is a Super Famicom game from 1993, so anyone looking for a cartridge should treat it as a retro collectible rather than assume a modern retail release.
A search phrase such as “Torneko no Daibōken Super Famicom cartridge” can help identify the original, but search results alone do not verify a seller, the cartridge’s condition, or whether a listing is available in your region. Check those details independently before buying.
