Torchlight: Infinite vs. Path of Exile: Which Free ARPG Should You Play?

Choose Torchlight: Infinite if playing across PC and mobile matters most; choose Path of Exile if you want to explore the particular character-building systems its listing emphasizes: a sprawling passive tree, socketable skill gems, itemization, and crafting. Both are listed as free-to-play and disclose in-app purchases, but the available store information does not establish which game is more generous, easier to learn, or more enjoyable. Your best starting point depends on the platform and systems you want to try—not on a claim that one is universally better.

At a glance: the differences that can guide your choice

The clearest distinction is access. Steam describes Torchlight: Infinite as a PC/mobile cross-platform game with single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. Its listing also says players must bind a third-party account to log in. The researched Epic Games Store listing for Path of Exile identifies Windows and describes solo play or parties of up to five friends. These are details from those particular listings, not a guarantee of availability on every platform or in every region.

The storefronts also foreground different build systems. Torchlight’s Steam page names talent tabs, legendary gear, and skills. Path of Exile’s Epic page calls attention to its passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, itemization, and crafting. Those descriptions can help you pick the kind of system you want to investigate, but they do not measure build depth or prove that one game has more viable ways to play.

Pick based on where you want to play

Torchlight: Infinite: PC and mobile access, with account binding

If device flexibility is a deciding factor, the Steam listing gives Torchlight the more explicit case: it describes PC/mobile cross-platform play and cross-platform multiplayer. It also lists single-player and online co-op. However, access comes with a stated account requirement: players must bind a third-party account to log in. If you prefer not to connect an additional account, check the current sign-in requirements before choosing it.

“Cross-platform” does not answer every practical question. The listing supports the broad claim that the game spans PC and mobile; it does not, by itself, specify every device, region, account flow, or detail of how a particular player’s progress is handled. Confirm the current store and login information for the device you intend to use rather than assuming that every version works identically.

Path of Exile: the researched Epic listing is for Windows

The Epic Games Store listing used here identifies Windows and describes Path of Exile as an online action RPG. That makes it a straightforward lead if you are looking at the Windows listing and want to play alone or with friends. It does not establish the game’s complete platform availability worldwide, or the availability of every edition and purchase option. Check the relevant official store for your region and device before installing.

For either game, platform fit is more concrete than a broad claim about which is “better.” If you want one title to span PC and mobile, Torchlight is the supported lead. If the Windows Epic listing matches your setup, Path of Exile is an option there. If neither listing matches your device, verify availability before comparing the games’ other features.

Compare the build systems you want to explore

Torchlight: Infinite foregrounds talents, gear, and skills

Steam’s description lists 24 talent tabs, more than 200 legendary gear items, and more than 240 skills. These counts give a sense of the kinds of build ingredients the store page advertises, but they are not an independent count or a measure of how many distinct, effective builds are available. They may also change as the game is updated. Treat them as a snapshot of the listing, not a promise that a fixed number of options will remain available.

The page also describes seasonal updates and a new hero trait among its seasonal features. For someone deciding whether to try Torchlight, that points toward a game whose advertised offering includes both build components and season-specific additions. It does not tell you how much time a season lasts, how a specific trait performs, or whether its mechanics suit your preferred play style. Look at the current in-game and store descriptions if a particular season or hero is the deciding factor.

Path of Exile foregrounds a passive tree, gems, gear, and crafting

Epic’s description makes a different set of systems central: a sprawling passive skill tree, socketable skill gems, itemization, and crafting. It also lists seven starting classes and 18 subclasses. If you are drawn to selecting skills through gems, shaping a character through a large tree, and engaging with equipment and crafting, these are the specific reasons to begin with Path of Exile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing does not explain how its classes and subclasses interact with every build, how much guidance the game provides, or how difficult any system is to learn. “Seven starting classes” and “18 subclasses” are useful catalog details, not a direct measure of build freedom or accessibility. Choose it because the named systems sound appealing, then judge the actual experience for yourself.

What the comparison cannot establish

The storefront descriptions use different terms and emphasize different features. Torchlight’s counts cannot be directly compared with Path of Exile’s tree, class, and subclass descriptions: they are unlike categories, and the listings do not provide a common measure of build variety, balance, or complexity. A large number of listed items or skills is not proof that every option is equally useful or that a game offers more meaningful choices.

Use the feature descriptions as a way to narrow your first download, not as a substitute for playing. If you are undecided, choose the set of systems you are more curious to learn. The available evidence supports that choice more strongly than a ranking of which game has the deeper or more beginner-friendly character building.

Solo play, co-op, and playing with friends

Both listings support solo play, but their wording gives different levels of detail about group play. Steam lists Torchlight: Infinite as single-player and with online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Epic says Path of Exile can be played solo or with up to five friends. That is the clearest stated party-size figure in the material available for this comparison; it does not establish a corresponding maximum for Torchlight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you plan to play with a specific group, check more than the headline feature. Confirm that everyone can use a supported platform and that the current multiplayer and account requirements fit your group. Torchlight’s Steam page describes cross-platform multiplayer, but does not settle every device or account combination. Path of Exile’s listing describes groups of up to five friends, but the researched page is a Windows listing. Neither statement should be stretched into a guarantee about every setup.

If you expect to play alone, the listings provide a basis for considering either game: Steam explicitly lists Torchlight’s single-player option, while Epic describes Path of Exile as playable solo. The listings do not compare the quality, pace, or balance of solo play, so use that feature as confirmation that solo is an advertised way to play—not as evidence that the single-player experience is identical in both.

What “free-to-play” does—and does not—tell you

Steam labels Torchlight: Infinite free-to-play and lists in-app purchases. Epic labels Path of Exile’s base game free and says it may include in-app purchases. Those disclosures mean both can be considered without paying for the base game through the researched listings. They do not reveal the full price of every purchase, the value of individual items, whether spending affects progression, or which game offers the better deal.

Torchlight’s Steam page also describes seasonal rewards and Pactspirit draws. Those are relevant signs that the listing includes seasonal reward and draw systems, but they are not enough to establish current prices, odds, purchase requirements, or gameplay effects. The source material does not support calling either game pay-to-win, claiming that spending is required, or declaring one more fair. If those issues matter to you, inspect the current in-game purchase disclosures and regional store information before spending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical approach is to install the free base game that best matches your platform and build interests, then decide whether you want to make any purchase after seeing the current options yourself. “Free-to-play” is a starting cost description, not a promise that every optional item is free or that all purchases have the same impact.

Seasons and changing content

Torchlight’s listing describes recurring seasonal additions

The Steam page features a season called “Afterlight” in the listing reflected by the source material. It describes a seasonal mechanic, a new hero trait, progression changes, and a challenge mode. Because season names, events, rewards, traits, and other content can change, treat that name and feature set as a listing snapshot rather than a guarantee of what is live when you read this. Check the current Steam page or the game’s own current notices if a particular season is important to your decision.

The same listing says there is no stamina and no cooldowns, and mentions a trade house. These are page claims about Torchlight’s advertised systems, not independently tested findings or a complete explanation of how those systems work. They may help identify features you want to investigate, but they do not establish what the trade house permits, how trading is regulated, or how the absence of stamina or cooldowns affects the overall experience.

Do not infer a seasonal comparison from one listing

The researched Epic page describes Path of Exile’s core systems and party play, but it does not provide a current seasonal comparison equivalent to the Torchlight details above. That absence is not evidence that Path of Exile lacks seasonal content. It simply means these particular listing descriptions do not establish which game has more current content, a longer season, or the more appealing update.

What publisher context says about Torchlight’s audience

XD Inc.’s 2024 annual report states that PC users made up “over half” of Torchlight’s core player base. This is a publisher-reported statistic for 2024, not a current player count, an independently measured platform split, or evidence that PC is the best way to play. It offers dated context: despite Steam’s PC/mobile cross-platform description, the company said PC users represented more than half of the game’s core audience at that time. Read XD Inc.’s 2024 annual report.

The same report says XD had adjusted the game’s design philosophy and that each season since the end of 2024 had shown progressive improvement in performance. That is the publisher’s assessment, not independent player research. It may help explain the company’s view of the game’s development, but it cannot show that every player will prefer a particular season or that Torchlight outperforms Path of Exile.

A practical way to decide before you install

  1. Start with your device. If PC/mobile cross-platform access is important, Torchlight is the listing that explicitly describes it. If you are considering Path of Exile through Epic, the researched listing identifies Windows. Verify current availability for your region and intended device.
  2. Check the account requirement. Torchlight’s Steam page says a third-party account must be bound to log in. Decide whether that requirement is acceptable before choosing it for convenience across devices.
  3. Choose the systems that interest you. Start with Torchlight if talent tabs, skills, gear, and its seasonal features sound like the more appealing set to explore. Start with Path of Exile if its passive tree, socketable skill gems, itemization, and crafting are the draw.
  4. Match the game to your group. For Path of Exile, Epic describes solo play or parties of up to five friends. For Torchlight, Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. Confirm that the current platform and account setup works for everyone who plans to join.
  5. Try the base game before judging optional purchases. Both researched listings disclose a free base game and in-app purchases. Review current purchase details in your region if you decide to spend; the listings alone do not settle price, value, or gameplay impact.

Bottom line: which one should you play?

For a first try, choose Torchlight: Infinite if PC/mobile access is your priority and you are comfortable with its stated third-party account binding. Choose Path of Exile if you want to explore the character systems its Epic listing explicitly highlights—especially the passive tree, socketable skill gems, itemization, and crafting—and the Windows listing fits your setup. If your deciding factor is which game is easier, more generous with purchases, or has more meaningful builds, the cited store descriptions do not settle that question. Both are free-to-play starting points; the right first download is the one whose platform and advertised systems fit what you want to try.
