TOPPING DX9 Discrete Review: A Premium DAC, Headphone Amp and Preamp in One

The TOPPING DX9 Discrete is a desktop all-in-one for listeners who want a DAC, headphone amplifier and preamp in one component, with broad digital connectivity, balanced headphone outputs, Bluetooth, ten-band parametric EQ and crossfeed. Its feature set and published power figures look extensive, but those manufacturer and editorial specifications are not a substitute for independent measurements or a listening test. It makes most sense when its inputs, outputs and DSP suit your actual setup—not simply because its numbers are large.

What the DX9 Discrete does

TOPPING describes the DX9 Discrete as a fully balanced 1-bit DAC and headphone amplifier built around its PSRM architecture and a six-channel discrete NFCA amplifier. It also provides preamplifier functionality, so it can serve as the source component for a power amplifier or active speakers. This is a desktop unit, not a portable USB dongle.

The practical appeal is consolidation: digital sources, headphones and a downstream speaker system can connect to one component. Whether that is an advantage depends on the exact connectors and functions you need; a feature-rich unit is not automatically a better fit than a simpler DAC/amp or separate components.

Connections and format support

What Hi-Fi reports a wide set of digital inputs: asynchronous USB, two optical, two coaxial, AES and IIS-LVDS (I²S). For headphones, it lists 4.4 mm, 4-pin XLR and 6.35 mm outputs. For a downstream amplifier or active speakers, it reports balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs. Check the current official manual and product specification before purchase, especially if you rely on a particular input, output mode or cabling arrangement.

Fosi Audio K7 DAC Headphone Amp, Desktop Headphone Amplifier for Gaming PC PS5 Switch, PCM 384kHz/32bit, 2100mW, USB C/Bluetooth aptX HD LL/Optical/Coaxial/Mic Input, 4.4mm Balanced/3.5mm/RCA Output
  • Versatile DAC Amp: The K7 is designed for both HiFi headphone audiophiles and music lovers. It can serve as a powerful hub for building your desktop audio system. Whether your're enjoying music, gaming or working, the K7 handles it all with ease

  • Comprehensive Connectivity: Supports USB-C, coaxial, optical, Bluetooth aptX HD/LL and 3.5mm microphone input. Outputs include 4.4mm balanced, 3.5mm single-ended, and RCA—easily connecting to headphones, powered speakers, or amplifiers for desktop setups
  • User-Centric Design: Compact yet user-friendly, the K7 features dual large control knobs, five shortcut buttons, and an angled chassis for ergonomic comfort. A high-resolution display shows real-time status, making operation easy and intuitive
  • Durable All-Metal Build: Crafted from solid aluminum alloy, the K7 features a rugged, wear-resistant chassis with a sleek metallic finish and enhanced electromagnetic interference shielding

The reported maximum digital formats vary by input. These are published specifications, not capabilities independently verified by laboratory testing in the available evidence.

Input group Reported maximum format Source
USB and IIS-LVDS PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz; native DSD512 What Hi-Fi, 2026
Other digital inputs PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz; DSD64 What Hi-Fi, 2026

These ceilings matter only if the source, connection and playback software can deliver those formats. For most setup decisions, connector compatibility and reliable playback are more consequential than a headline maximum sample rate.

Headphone power: impressive published figures, with limits

What Hi-Fi reports balanced output of 7,080 mW per channel into 32 ohms and 10,000 mW per channel into 16 ohms, along with a noise-floor figure below 0.5 μVrms. TOPPING Store lists 7,080 mW ×2 at 32 ohms and a 131 dB DNR figure. These are attributed published specifications, not independent measurements established here.

  • Complete Accessories: Includes USB charging cable, optical cable, and PC-USB to Type-B cable. Ensures hassle-free setup and immediate use. Seamless connectivity for various devices. (Note: No microphone input.)

Power figures alone cannot establish sound quality or suitability for every headphone. Impedance, sensitivity, desired listening level, output connection and noise with sensitive earphones all matter. If you are choosing for difficult-to-drive headphones or highly sensitive IEMs, seek reliable independent measurements under relevant conditions rather than treating the listed maximum as a universal compatibility guarantee.

PEQ, crossfeed and Bluetooth

Ten-band parametric EQ and profiles

The DX9 Discrete includes ten-band parametric EQ and crossfeed. TOPPING Tune software can be used to configure profiles, according to What Hi-Fi and TOPPING’s product information. That makes the DSP features a tangible reason to consider the unit if you want to tune headphone response or tailor listening profiles. Confirm current software and operating-system compatibility before making the software workflow central to your purchase.

Crossfeed

Crossfeed is intended to blend some channel information for headphone listening, changing the strongly separated left/right presentation that headphones can produce. Its usefulness is a matter of preference; having the feature does not imply that every listener will want it enabled.

Bluetooth codecs

TOPPING Store describes Bluetooth 5.1 support for LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, AAC and SBC. Codec availability can depend on the transmitting phone or computer as well as the receiving device. If a specific codec is essential, verify support in the current official specification and manual for your region and source device.

USB setup and sample-rate display

TOPPING’s FAQ says the DX9’s displayed sample rate reflects the incoming signal. A computer or phone may resample audio before it reaches the unit, depending on operating-system, player and output settings. Where the playback application supports it, exclusive mode can bypass system mixing and help preserve the source rate; it does not improve the recording itself. TOPPING names Audirvana for macOS and Foobar for Windows as software suggestions, not as independently evaluated recommendations.

For USB recognition problems, TOPPING advises using a cable shorter than 1.5 meters, trying another USB port or cable, and avoiding hubs. Its FAQ notes that some phones require OTG to be enabled. This is troubleshooting guidance, not a claim that a special USB cable is required.

How it compares with the original DX9 or separate components

TechRadar identifies PSRM architecture and ten-band PEQ as key changes in the Discrete relative to the original DX9. The available coverage does not establish a controlled comparison of measured performance, sound, reliability or value between the two models, so the Discrete cannot be declared an upgrade for every DX9 owner.

When weighing it against the original DX9, a lower-cost integrated DAC/amp or separate DAC and amplifier, compare the actual system rather than the product category alone:

Price and buying considerations

At the time its page was accessed in 2026, TOPPING Store listed the DX9 Discrete at US$1,299. What Hi-Fi and TechRadar reported £1,299 as UK launch pricing in 2026. These are different regional and source contexts, not a live universal price; check authorized sellers in your region for current availability and the full purchase terms.

TOPPING’s manual page links to its Amazon Store, but that does not establish that a specific marketplace listing is in stock, sold by an authorized merchant or available at the store-page price. What Hi-Fi identifies Electromod as a UK distributor; verify current distribution and warranty arrangements directly before buying.

Verdict: who should consider it?

The DX9 Discrete is worth considering if you want a premium desktop component that combines headphone amplification, DAC and preamp duties, and you will use its particular range of digital connections or DSP features. Its reported power and format support are extensive, but they do not by themselves show audible superiority or prove suitability for every headphone. Because independent laboratory measurements and hands-on listening results are not established here, buyers who prioritize verified performance should look for independent evidence specific to their headphones and system before paying a premium.
