Ferromagnets and antiferromagnets differ first in how their atomic magnetic moments are arranged. A ferromagnet has an uncompensated net magnetization, while an ideal antiferromagnet has opposing sublattice moments that nearly cancel. That distinction changes how a device writes, reads, protects and moves information. A topological antiferromagnet adds another layer: its magnetic symmetry and electronic band structure can create Berry-curvature, multipole and real-space-texture effects that produce Hall, optical or spin-current responses even when the net magnetic moment is very small.
For spintronics, this is a trade-off rather than a universal replacement story. Ferromagnets offer mature magnetic-field control and strong magnetoresistive signals. Antiferromagnets can offer low stray fields, better immunity to field disturbance and potentially much faster dynamics, but their states can be harder to detect electrically. “Topological” identifies useful electronic or magnetic structure; it does not guarantee faster, cheaper or commercially superior hardware.

What the two magnetic orders mean
Ferromagnets: one net magnetic moment
In a ferromagnet, neighboring atomic moments tend to align in the same direction. The material therefore carries a macroscopic magnetization, often represented by M. Magnetic domains can point in different directions, but each domain has a substantial moment. A field, a current-generated torque or exchange coupling to another layer can move or rotate those domains.

A magnetic field produces a direct torque, and the magnetization can be sensed through established effects such as anisotropic magnetoresistance, giant magnetoresistance or tunneling magnetoresistance. The same moment also creates stray fields: nearby bits can influence one another, and a ferromagnetic layer can disturb a field-sensitive circuit.

Antiferromagnets: compensated sublattices
In an ideal collinear antiferromagnet, neighboring sublattices point in opposite directions. Their moments cancel in the bulk, leaving little or no net magnetization. The orientation of the two-sublattice order is commonly described by a Néel vector, L, which points from one sublattice to the other. Reversing or rotating L changes the magnetic state even though the total moment remains close to zero.
“Zero moment” is an idealization, not a promise about every sample. Defects, spin canting, rough interfaces, uncompensated surfaces and nonuniform domains can produce a residual moment. Non-collinear antiferromagnets may also require higher-order magnetic multipoles, rather than a single Néel vector, to describe their order.
What “topological” adds
Topology in this context refers to structure that cannot be removed by a small, symmetry-preserving change. It can occur in momentum space, through Berry curvature and protected band crossings, or in real space, through robust spin textures. Magnetic order determines which symmetries survive, so changing the antiferromagnetic orientation can change the allowed electronic response.
The 2018 Nature Physics review on topological antiferromagnetic spintronics describes proposals linking antiferromagnetic order with Dirac points, topological superconductivity and Majorana-fermion physics, as well as anomalous and topological Hall effects in systems with zero net moment. These are effects or proposals for particular material systems, not properties shared by every antiferromagnet.
A 2022 Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics review explains how momentum-space Berry curvature and real-space magnetic multipoles can combine to produce macroscopic signals. Reported response classes include anomalous Hall and Nernst effects, magneto-optical effects and magnetic spin Hall effects in topological magnets with negligible net magnetization. Ferromagnets can also have Berry-curvature-enhanced bands and topological features; topology is not exclusive to antiferromagnets. The useful question is which magnetic symmetry and band structure permit a response in the material being considered.

Why non-collinear examples matter
Compounds in the Mn3X family, where X can be Sn, Ge or Pt, illustrate the point. Their non-collinear spin arrangement and crystal symmetry can generate an anomalous Hall response despite a small net moment. In such materials, a multipole description can be more informative than treating the order as two perfectly opposing sublattices. A device designer must therefore identify the actual magnetic structure before assuming that a Néel-vector model, a conventional antiferromagnetic sensor scheme or a particular symmetry argument applies.
Comparison at a glance
| Design axis | Ferromagnetic systems | Antiferromagnetic systems | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic order | Aligned moments produce an uncompensated magnetization. | Opposing sublattices largely cancel; collinear order is often represented by a Néel vector. | Non-collinear order may require magnetic multipoles instead. |
| Interaction with external fields | Strong, convenient field response; the same moment creates stray-field coupling. | Near-zero net moment can reduce stray fields and improve resistance to disturbance by moderate external fields. | Defects, canting, interfaces and domain structure can create residual moments. |
| Intrinsic dynamics | Mature platform, but the general class comparison is usually slower than antiferromagnetic spin rotation. | Reviews describe potentially orders-of-magnitude-faster dynamics; spin rotation can reach the terahertz regime in suitable systems. | Speed depends on damping, anisotropy, exchange, geometry, temperature and measurement method. |
| Writing and control | Magnetic fields, spin-transfer torque and spin-orbit torque are established control routes. | Current-induced Néel-vector switching and spin-orbit torques have been demonstrated in research films and heavy-metal heterostructures. | A laboratory switching result is not evidence of scalable manufacturing. |
| Electrical readout | Magnetoresistive detection is sensitive and technologically established. | Hall, tunneling-magnetoresistance and symmetry-enabled spin-split-band effects can provide readout, but some states remain difficult to distinguish. | Signal size and even the existence of a signal depend on order, symmetry, interfaces and device geometry. |
| Topological responses | Possible when ferromagnetic band structure has suitable Berry curvature or textures. | Possible with negligible net magnetization when magnetic symmetry and topology allow it. | Topology is a material-specific mechanism, not a performance guarantee. |
| Technology maturity | Several ferromagnetic spintronic concepts support commercial technologies. | Important effects and prototype components have been demonstrated, while broad practical deployment remains unsettled. | Evaluate operating temperature, endurance, energy, repeatability and integration for each composition. |
Why antiferromagnets can be attractive for spintronics
Low stray-field coupling
Because the opposing sublattices largely cancel, an antiferromagnetic bit can disturb neighboring bits less than a ferromagnetic bit with a comparable local order parameter. That property is attractive for dense arrays and for circuits in which magnetic cross-talk is a limitation. It does not mean an antiferromagnetic device is completely field-independent: uncompensated interfaces, canting and domain walls can still couple to fields.
Potentially rapid response
Antiferromagnets are governed by strong exchange interactions between sublattices. Reviews of antiferromagnetic spintronics describe intrinsic dynamics that may be orders of magnitude faster than typical ferromagnetic switching, with antiferromagnetic spin rotation reaching terahertz frequencies in appropriate materials. These statements describe class-level potential, not a universal clock rate. A practical device is limited by damping, anisotropy, pulse shape, heating, contacts and the bandwidth of its detector.
Many states can share almost the same net moment
The absence of a large net magnetization can be a benefit for security and cross-talk, but it removes the easiest state variable to measure. Two domains with different Néel-vector orientations can look nearly identical to a simple magnetic-field probe. Readout must instead exploit a symmetry-dependent electrical, optical or spin-transport signal.
How topological antiferromagnets are written
Writing means changing the antiferromagnetic order or a related texture in a controlled, repeatable way. Research demonstrations have used current-induced torques in antiferromagnetic films and antiferromagnet/heavy-metal bilayers. A charge current in the adjacent layer can generate a spin accumulation; exchange coupling transfers a Néel-order spin-orbit torque to the antiferromagnet. Other experiments use spin currents, magnetic fields, thermal gradients or exchange coupling to a neighboring magnetic layer.

- Choose the order parameter. Determine whether the state is a collinear Néel vector, a non-collinear multipole, a domain configuration or a topological texture.
- Identify the torque symmetry. Calculate or measure which current direction and crystal orientation produce a torque on that order. A torque that switches one crystal axis may do nothing in another orientation.
- Set the pulse and thermal budget. Current density, pulse duration, Joule heating and temperature can all alter switching. A pulse that moves a domain wall may not reverse a uniformly ordered film.
- Verify the final state independently. Use more than one electrical or optical observable when possible, because a resistance change can also come from heating, defects or interface changes.
- Test repeatability and retention. Demonstrating one current-induced change is not the same as showing low-error cycling, stable retention and operation across a wafer.
The 2024 npj Spintronics review reports current-induced switching of Néel-vector orientation in several antiferromagnetic films and bilayers, along with current-driven motion of antiferromagnetic spin textures. Those results establish viable mechanisms for research devices; they do not establish a standard commercial process.
How the states are read
Hall measurements
An anomalous Hall voltage can reveal the orientation of a magnetic order when symmetry permits it. In non-collinear antiferromagnets, a large Hall response can arise even though the net moment is small. In a topological material, Berry curvature can amplify the signal. Hall readout is therefore powerful but not universal: reversing a Néel vector may leave the measured voltage unchanged, and an observed voltage may include ordinary Hall, thermoelectric or contact contributions.
Tunneling magnetoresistance and related transport
An antiferromagnetic layer in a tunnel junction can alter transmission through spin-dependent density of states or interface symmetry. Tunneling magnetoresistance and other magnetoresistive effects have been explored as ways to distinguish states that are invisible to a bulk magnetometer. Interface quality, barrier thickness, crystal orientation and electrode choice strongly affect the signal.
Optical and spin-current probes
Magneto-optical rotation, terahertz spectroscopy and spin Hall measurements can detect order or dynamics without relying on a large static moment. These methods are valuable in laboratories, but a practical memory requires a compact detector, a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio and a readout operation that does not disturb the state.
The 2024 review emphasizes that antiferromagnetic spin textures may be small and topologically stable while remaining difficult to read. That readout challenge is the central qualification behind many optimistic proposals.

What topology can do for devices—and what it cannot
Possible functions
- Hall and Nernst conversion: Berry curvature can convert an electric field or temperature gradient into a transverse voltage.
- Magneto-optical modulation: Magnetic symmetry can alter light polarization or absorption, enabling optical probes and modulators.
- Spin-current generation: A magnetic spin Hall response can create or deflect spin currents without a large ferromagnetic moment.
- Robust textures: Real-space topological textures may resist continuous deformation, potentially providing compact information carriers.
- Band-structure control: Changing antiferromagnetic order can create, move or gap symmetry-protected crossings in selected materials.
Limits of the label
Topology does not remove ordinary engineering constraints. A topological response can be weak at the operating temperature, canceled by domains, masked by shunting through another layer or lost when a film is grown with the wrong orientation. A theoretically protected feature may require a clean crystal, a particular Fermi level or a symmetry that fabrication breaks. “Topological antiferromagnet” therefore describes an opportunity for a coupling mechanism, not a guaranteed memory cell, sensor or logic gate.
Choosing between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet
Start with the required signal and environment rather than with the material’s novelty.
- Choose a ferromagnetic approach when direct field control, a large magnetoresistive signal, established fabrication and straightforward magnetic characterization dominate the requirements.
- Investigate an antiferromagnetic approach when stray-field suppression, dense packing, immunity to magnetic disturbance or ultrafast dynamics is important and the system can support a credible readout.
- Investigate a topological antiferromagnet when the target function specifically benefits from a symmetry-enabled Hall, optical or spin-current response, and the candidate material retains that response at the intended temperature and interface conditions.
For a fair comparison, measure the same device-level quantities in both candidates: switching probability over many cycles, write energy including interconnect heating, retention time, readout margin, operating temperature, endurance, area, process variation and compatibility with the intended electronics. The review literature does not provide a single head-to-head numerical table for these metrics, so class-level claims cannot substitute for material-specific experiments.
Common mistakes in interpreting the comparison
Mistake: treating every antiferromagnet as perfectly invisible to fields
Real samples can have canting, defects and uncompensated surfaces. Report the measured moment and the geometry instead of assuming exactly zero magnetization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMistake: equating fast intrinsic dynamics with fast memory
A terahertz magnetic mode does not automatically yield a terahertz memory cycle. The write circuit, thermal recovery, pulse generator and readout must operate on the same timescale.
Best Value
Mistake: assuming a Hall signal proves a particular magnetic state
Hall voltages can mix several mechanisms. Establish their symmetry, field and temperature dependence, and rule out thermoelectric artifacts before assigning the signal to a Néel-vector or multipole reversal.
Mistake: calling a laboratory torque a commercial technology
Research films and bilayers demonstrate physical control. Commercial readiness additionally requires uniform deposition, compatible temperatures, repeatable switching, low error rates, endurance and a manufacturable readout.
Mistake: using a Néel-vector model for a non-collinear material
For non-collinear antiferromagnets, higher-order magnetic multipoles and crystal symmetry may determine the response. The correct order parameter must come from the measured or calculated spin structure.

Ferromagnets remain the practical reference when a device needs a strong, easily detected magnetization and mature control methods. Antiferromagnets trade that convenient signal for near-zero stray field and potentially much faster collective dynamics. Topological antiferromagnets extend the design space by allowing symmetry- and Berry-phase-driven electrical, optical and spin-current responses without a large net moment. Their promise is real, but so is the central engineering problem: writing can be demonstrated in research structures, while reliable, scalable readout and integration still have to be proved for each material and device.
