There is no single best blockchain programming language. For Ethereum smart contracts, start with Solidity or Vyper; for Solana programs, start with Rust. If you want to build a dapp, backend service, or developer tool instead, choose a language supported by the chain’s APIs and SDKs—those are different jobs from writing on-chain code.
What programming language is used for blockchain?
It depends on what you are building and which blockchain you are targeting. “Blockchain programming” can mean writing smart contracts or on-chain programs, building the applications that call them, or working on node and protocol software. A language used for an SDK or API client is not necessarily usable for a chain’s smart contracts.

Ethereum.org’s development documentation, last updated September 24, 2026, directs developers toward different paths for different goals. It also makes the distinction plainly: “A common misconception is that developers must write smart contracts in order to build on Ethereum. This is false.”

| Platform or task | Languages identified in the reviewed official documentation | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum smart contracts | Solidity and Vyper | Ethereum.org’s smart-contract language page, last updated July 9, 2026, identifies these as the two most active and maintained options. Solidity targets the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM); Vyper is Python-friendly and emphasizes readability and auditability. |
| Ethereum low-level work | Yul and Yul+ | Lower-level or intermediate options for developers already familiar with EVM details and security best practices. Ethereum.org positions Yul for more experienced developers. |
| Solana programs | Rust | Solana’s official guide contrasts Rust for Solana programs with Solidity in the EVM ecosystem. |
| Solana client applications | JavaScript, Rust, Python, Java, C++, C#, and Go | Solana SDKs support clients in these languages. SDK availability does not make each language a Solana smart-contract language. |
| Ethereum client applications and tooling | JavaScript, Python, Go, Rust, Java, and other general-purpose languages | Ethereum exposes a JSON-RPC interface. Ethereum.org says any language able to use TCP/IP can use that interface, which is distinct from writing an EVM contract. |
| Aptos | Move | Aptos documentation search-result material describes Move as a Web3 language focused on scarcity and access control. The underlying page was not available for direct verification, so the detail established here is limited. |
Which programming language is best for blockchain?
The best choice is the language that fits your target chain and the work you want to do. Ethereum.org’s guidance is to match the tool to the job; familiarity and personal preference also matter. Use this decision path:
#1 Best Overall
- Choose the platform first. If you want to write Ethereum contracts, learn Solidity or Vyper. If your target is Solana programs, learn Rust. These environments are not interchangeable by default.
- Name the kind of work. Decide whether you want to write on-chain programs, a user-facing app, backend services, node software, or developer tools. Then check the platform’s APIs, SDKs, and documentation for that role.
- Build from your existing skills. Ethereum.org notes that JavaScript or Python experience can help you understand differences between smart-contract languages. Solidity also has tutorials, tools, and a community that can support learning.
- Evaluate the workflow, not just the syntax. Look at the available development and testing tools and learn the platform’s contract concepts. A familiar language alone does not guarantee a suitable or safe toolchain.
Should I learn Solidity or Rust?
Choose Solidity for Ethereum contracts
Solidity is a high-level, statically typed, object-oriented language designed for the EVM. It is the practical starting point if your goal is to write Ethereum smart contracts and use the tutorials and tools in that ecosystem.
Choose Rust for Solana programs
Choose Rust if your goal is to build Solana on-chain programs. Rust is also among the languages available for Solana client SDKs, but that does not erase the distinction between a client application and an on-chain program.
Rank #2
Choose based on the target, not a universal ranking
Solidity and Rust serve different platform ecosystems, so “which is better?” has no useful answer without a target. If you have not chosen a chain yet, first compare the platforms and the kind of application you want to build; then learn the language and tooling used for that environment.
Can I use Python or JavaScript for blockchain?
Yes, for many blockchain-related tasks—but not as a blanket substitute for a chain’s smart-contract language. Python and JavaScript can be used for applications and tools that communicate with blockchain APIs or SDKs. Ethereum’s JSON-RPC interface is accessible to languages that can use TCP/IP, and Solana lists both Python and JavaScript among its client SDK options.
Rank #3
For Ethereum smart contracts, Ethereum.org identifies Solidity and Vyper as the most active and maintained choices; for Solana programs, the official guide identifies Rust. Treat client-language support and on-chain language support as separate questions when planning a project.
What language should I learn for smart contracts?
- Ethereum: Start with Solidity or Vyper. Ethereum.org recommends these for readers new to smart-contract languages.
- Solana: Start with Rust for on-chain programs, following Solana’s developer guidance.
- Low-level Ethereum optimization: Consider Yul or Yul+ only if you already understand EVM details and the relevant security practices.
- Fe: Ethereum.org describes Fe as early-stage, so it is not the default beginner recommendation in the guidance reviewed here.
- Aptos: Move is identified in Aptos documentation search-result material, but the available detail is too limited to make a deeper learning recommendation.
Does choosing the right language make a smart contract safe?
No. Language choice is only one part of development. Solidity’s official documentation recommends code review, testing, audits, and correctness proofs before production use. A language or framework does not by itself establish that a contract is secure.
