Payload, flow and acreage figures are manufacturer claims or specifications, not guaranteed field output. Confirm the current U.S. configuration, package contents and quote with an authorized dealer.
What agricultural drones actually do
Application drones can dispense liquid pesticide, fertilizer, fungicide, herbicide, insecticide and foliar feed where the product label and local rules permit. They can also spread granular fertilizer or seed, map fields, follow terrain and treat isolated areas without putting a tractor on wet soil.
Common use cases include orchards and vineyards, steep or terraced ground, wetlands, muddy fields, spot treatments and work around sensitive areas. Night operation may be possible only when the aircraft, pilot, FAA approvals and pesticide label allow it. A spray system’s technical ability does not authorize every chemical: the product label, state pesticide rules and FAA requirements still control.

1. DJI Agras T50: best established value for a first commercial platform
DJI lists the T50 with a 40 kg spraying payload, 50 kg spreading payload, two-sprinkler flow of up to 16 L/min and optional four-sprinkler flow of up to 24 L/min. DJI’s published “up to 50 acres per hour” result is tied to specific dosage, width, speed and height conditions at DJI’s stated test setup.
The T50 is a practical fit for small-to-mid-sized farms and new custom operators who value a mature dealer and parts ecosystem. Its automation, terrain following, spray and spreading modules reduce the number of separate systems a new operator must learn. DJI lists an adjustable 50–500 μm droplet range in its T50 FAQ.
Where it fits
- Regular farm applications without the infrastructure of a 100-liter platform.
- Orchard, vineyard, wet-field and spot-treatment work.
- Operators who can obtain reliable local DJI agricultural service.
What to check first
- Whether your employer, agency or contract permits DJI equipment and associated data services.
- Dealer availability, battery and charger package, parts stock and repair turnaround.
- Actual output at your application volume rather than the headline acres-per-hour figure.
2. DJI Agras T100: best high-capacity DJI platform
DJI announced the T100 with a 100 L spraying payload, 150 L spreading payload or 100 kg lifting payload, and a listed maximum operating speed of 20 m/s: DJI’s launch announcement. That capacity can reduce refill frequency when a farm has enough water, labor, charging capacity and safe transport space.
The T100 is not automatically the most economical choice. A larger aircraft usually means more battery sets, greater generator or charger capacity, more chemical-handling equipment, heavier transport and greater exposure if a component or battery is unavailable. Verify U.S. availability, dealer support and regulatory eligibility before treating the global announcement as a purchasing specification.

Best use case
Choose this class when refill labor and turnaround time are the daily bottleneck and you have enough contracted or owned acreage to keep the system productive. A smaller drone may produce a better return when fields are fragmented, access is difficult or annual application volume is modest.
3. Hylio AG-272: best U.S.-based and NDAA-oriented commercial option
Hylio lists the AG-272 with an 18-gallon (68 L) liquid payload, up to a 40-foot effective swath and up to 4 gal/min—approximately 15 L/min—with its standard nozzle configuration. Hylio reports up to 50 acres per hour at a 2 gal/acre application rate, including between-flight downtime. The company’s specification sheet separates tank capacity, payload and aircraft-weight data, so do not treat 68 L as every operating payload condition.
Hylio positions the AG-272 as U.S.-based and NDAA compliant, making it a strong candidate for government work and buyers who prioritize domestic support. “NDAA compliant” is the manufacturer’s claim; verify the exact aircraft, controller, communications, cloud services and software against your agency or contract requirements.
Questions to put in the quote
- Which batteries, chargers, nozzles, pumps, filters and spares are included?
- What parts are stocked in the United States and who performs repairs?
- What is the realistic acres-per-hour rate at your application rate and refill distance?
- What training, software, warranty and recurring service fees apply?
Hylio does not publish a universal fixed price on its purchasing page; request a current package quote.
4. XAG P150 and P150 Max: best high-throughput alternative to DJI
Keep these models separate. XAG lists the P150 at up to 70 kg payload, 30 L/min maximum flow, 18 m/s maximum speed and a 5–10 m effective spray width. XAG reports 26 hectares per hour under stated test parameters. The newer P150 Max is listed with an 80 kg payload, 46 L/min maximum flow and 20 m/s maximum speed. See the P150 specifications, product lineup and U.S. announcement.

XAG’s mapping, terrain-following and atomization approach can appeal to operators seeking a distinct software and hardware ecosystem. Its P150 specification lists a 60–500 μm droplet range and an IPX6K protection rating; follow the official cleaning procedure rather than assuming the rating permits unlimited washing.
U.S. buying caveat
Global specifications do not necessarily describe the U.S. radio configuration, software, dealer territory or procurement status. Obtain a written U.S. quote, confirm parts and repair access, and verify that the intended operation is legally eligible before comparing the P150 or P150 Max with domestic offerings.

Hylio lists the ARES with a 13-gallon liquid tank, a 20-gallon solid-payload container and 110 lb payload capacity. It supports hydraulic nozzles, rotary atomizers and spreading configurations, and Hylio advertises up to 70 acres per hour at a 2 gal/acre rate. The company describes it as designed, engineered and manufactured at its Richmond, Texas facility using U.S. and global components, and presents it as NDAA compliant: ARES specifications and product information.
ARES suits smaller commercial applicators, specialized access work and government-oriented buyers who want a modular system without moving to the AG-272’s larger liquid class. It is not a hobby drone. Confirm the actual battery count, charger, transport setup, software and service terms in the quote.
How to compare spray drones accurately
Payload, tank volume and takeoff weight are different
Maximum payload weight, liquid tank capacity, solid hopper volume, maximum takeoff weight and usable payload after batteries and accessories are not interchangeable. Hylio and XAG publish these values separately. Always ask which number applies to a full-tank flight and which applies after installing spreading or spraying hardware.

Productivity depends on the whole field operation
Advertised acres per hour change with application volume, swath, speed, altitude, refill distance, water availability, battery swaps, terrain, obstacles, wind, temperature, canopy density and whether repositioning is included. A manufacturer test is a useful comparison point, not a guaranteed daily rate. Virginia Cooperative Extension provides additional field-operation context at its spray-drone publication.
Spray hardware and droplet control
Hydraulic nozzles, centrifugal or rotary atomizers, flow-meter feedback, variable-rate prescriptions, automatic flow adjustment, adjustable width and canopy penetration all affect results. Droplet-size ranges are not drift or efficacy guarantees: product formulation, nozzle, water, temperature, wind, height and downwash determine field behavior.
Wind, sensors and autonomy
A maximum-wind specification is not a recommendation to spray at that wind speed. Gusts, inversions, sensitive crops, waterways, nearby homes and the product label matter more than a headline rating. Terrain following, radar, vision sensors, RTK, route planning and return-to-home reduce workload but do not make an aircraft collision-proof. XAG warns that obstacle-avoidance failure probability rises above a stated relative-speed threshold, while DJI’s transmission figures are measured under unobstructed conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The whole-system cost is more than the aircraft
Build a quote around the operating system, not the airframe. Include:
- Aircraft plus spray and spreading modules.
- Enough batteries, chargers or generator capacity for the planned shift.
- Remote controller, RTK equipment and required software.
- Spare pumps, hoses, filters, nozzle tips, atomizer discs, arms, propellers and landing gear.
- Trailer or truck setup, water tanks, transfer pumps, mixing equipment, rinse water and spill containment.
- Personal protective equipment, insurance, registration, training and regulatory filings.
- Maintenance, winter storage, battery replacement and local technician support.
A third-party 2026 market guide gives rough estimates of $22,000–$28,000 for a DJI T50 and $55,000–$75,000 for a Hylio AG-272, while listing a Talos T60X at $17,899. These are not manufacturer prices and can change with dealer package, tariffs, batteries, chargers, training and region: market-price guide.

- NOTE! ! ! In order to fully shake the dry film lubricant evenly before use, we used larger bottles as containers, resulting in a visual effect that the content of dry film lubricant is only half of the bottle, and the actual liquid capacity is 【30ml】.
- Drone-Specific PFPE Dry Film Lubricant - Suitable for various types of drones. It can penetrate deep into drone propeller bearings/blades and motor shafts, forming an invisible protective layer without obvious grease spill traces. Eliminates stick-slip effect for smoother rotation while preventing grease migration that attracts dust. Resists pesticide corrosion for sprayer drones. Extends component service time.
- Innovative Liquid Application System - Unlike traditional spray lubricants, Horex's precision liquid formula with included dropper or needle-tip nozzle enables targeted dosing to small drone components (e.g., propeller, motor shafts, bearing races). It only takes a few seconds after applying to the parts to evaporate the liquid and leaving a thin layer of lubricating oil film, which is very convenient.
- Dry film lubricant due to the density of the material is different, so in the static state may occur stratified, which is a normal phenomenon. Please shake evenly before use. To prevent liquid evaporation, we have upgraded the packaging by adding an inner stopper to prevent liquid from flowing out. Random shipment of new and old packaging.
- Extensive Application - Maintenance of drone/UAV, FPV, or professional aerial camera drive shaft、propeller, model aircraft, drone battery port and remote control plane toy propeller, phone, camera, video camera, optical instrument hinge, gear, drawer, and other internal components, etc.
U.S. compliance: buying the drone does not authorize spraying
Before taking a quote, map the legal path for the actual operation:
- Obtain an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 where applicable. FAA explains the small-UAS rules at its Part 107 page.
- Determine the additional FAA approvals and operating conditions required for dispensing or spraying. FAA states that Part 137 governs aircraft, including drones, used to dispense substances: dispensing-chemicals guidance.
- Check requirements for aircraft over 55 lb, hazardous materials, beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations and any other nonstandard condition.
- Obtain the state pesticide-applicator license and any local authorization.
- Confirm that the pesticide label permits the crop, product, application method, rate, weather conditions and equipment.
- Complete aircraft registration, airspace checks, visual-line-of-sight procedures, insurance and required records.
Manufacturer guidance can help with onboarding, but it does not replace FAA, state-agency or product-label advice.
Operational failure points to plan for
Battery and charging bottlenecks
Short flights with a full payload can make battery sets, charging time, generator capacity, temperature management and safe storage the limiting factors. Do not treat a “nine-minute charge” as universal: DJI’s T50 claim is measured from 30% to 95% under specified battery-temperature and equipment conditions.
Refill and chemical-handling logistics
Plan water-source distance, mixing and agitation, compatibility, rinse-water disposal, spill containment, contamination control and loading on uneven ground. A large tank helps only if it can be refilled quickly and safely.
Drift and weather
Fine droplets, high flight altitude, gusts, inversions, unsuitable formulations and downwash near trees or structures can move product off target. Obtain a product-specific drift-management plan and follow the label and state rules.
Terrain and sensor errors
Terrain following can degrade over tall or irregular canopy, water, wires, reflective surfaces, weak GNSS or RTK corrections, steep slopes and dense vegetation. Mark towers, fences, trees and irrigation equipment, and perform a human preflight inspection even when routes are autonomous.
Buy, lease, or hire a custom operator?
- Occasional applications: hire a licensed custom applicator instead of carrying aircraft, battery and compliance overhead year-round.
- Small acreage or specialized terrain: consider a compact professional platform or lease.
- Regular custom work: a mid-size drone with strong local support can justify training and infrastructure.
- High daily acreage: evaluate a large platform or multi-drone fleet only after confirming water, charging, labor and field access.
- Government contracts: verify NDAA, agency-approved vendors, communications, cloud services and contract language before purchase.
- Low application volume: start with mapping or scouting, partner with an operator, or use a ground rig where practical.
Before-you-buy checklist
- Annual acres, average application rate and peak-day acreage.
- Crop height, canopy density, terrain, obstacles and field fragmentation.
- Water access, mixing area, rinse-water handling and safe launch space.
- Battery quantity, charging power, transport and storage.
- FAA Part 107/Part 137 path, state license and product-label approval.
- Dealer distance, technician availability, parts lead times and repair policy.
- Insurance, training, software subscriptions and total package cost.
- U.S. configuration, data-security requirements and procurement eligibility.
Questions to require in every dealer quote
- Exactly what aircraft, modules, batteries, chargers and spares are included?
- What is the realistic acres-per-hour rate at my application volume, terrain and refill distance?
- What are expected battery life and replacement costs?
- Which parts are stocked domestically, and who performs repairs?
- Are software, mapping, RTK or fleet-control fees recurring?
- What training and regulatory onboarding are included?
- What crops, formulations and cleaning procedures are supported?
- What warranty, loaner and downtime policies apply?
- Can the system meet my agency’s NDAA, data and approved-vendor requirements?
- What is the complete delivered cost, including water, charging, transport and safety equipment?
Bottom line
For many first-time U.S. commercial buyers, the DJI Agras T50 is the most balanced entry into application drones. The DJI T100 makes sense only when high capacity can be supported by water, power and labor. Hylio’s AG-272 is the stronger starting point for buyers prioritizing U.S.-based support or NDAA-oriented work, while the ARES offers a smaller modular alternative. XAG’s P150 and P150 Max are credible high-throughput alternatives, but U.S. availability, service and regulatory details must be confirmed in writing. In every case, compare the complete operating system and legal path—not just tank size or aircraft price.
