The top ten Linux distributions in a DistroWatch page-hit snapshot dated February 20, 2026, were CachyOS, Linux Mint, MX Linux, Debian, Pop!_OS, Zorin OS, EndeavourOS, Manjaro, Fedora, and Ubuntu. That is a ranking of visitor interest on DistroWatch—not a measure of installs, active users, or which distribution is best for you. A different DistroWatch ranking updated October 6, 2026, placed Ubuntu first, Linux Mint second, and Debian third, showing how much the result depends on the metric.
This comparison uses the February page-hit order as its top-ten ranking. It does not claim hands-on testing: the available evidence establishes popularity indicators and broad selection advice, not a controlled comparison of the ten systems.

How this Linux distro ranking works
“Popular” has no single agreed measure here. The February 20, 2026 snapshot, reported by iTechGuides, orders distributions by DistroWatch page hits per day (HPD) over a displayed period covering the previous six months. HPD records visits to distro pages; it does not verify downloads, installations, active users, enterprise deployments, or global market share.
DistroWatch’s separate top-20 ranking, updated October 6, 2026, combines Google Trends search interest (80%) with editor assessment (20%). Its first three are Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Debian. Its search-interest and Wikipedia-reading indicators are not install counts, and its scores should not be compared directly with the HPD figures.

The top 10 Linux distros in the February 2026 page-hit snapshot
The figures below are the DistroWatch HPD values reported by iTechGuides on August 13, 2026, for its February 20, 2026 snapshot. The order is useful as a dated measure of page interest, not as a recommendation or a ranking of technical quality.
| Rank | Distribution | Page hits per day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | CachyOS | 4,407 |
| 2 | Linux Mint | 2,618 |
| 3 | MX Linux | 2,189 |
| 4 | Debian | 1,540 |
| 5 | Pop!_OS | 1,456 |
| 6 | Zorin OS | 1,371 |
| 7 | EndeavourOS | 1,306 |
| 8 | Manjaro | 1,139 |
| 9 | Fedora | 1,102 |
| 10 | Ubuntu | 1,046 |
Why another ranking puts Ubuntu first
The two snapshots answer different questions. CachyOS leads the February HPD list, while Ubuntu leads the October 2026 search-oriented ranking. In the latter, Ubuntu’s Google Trends indicator is 100/100 relative to the top distro’s 30-day average; Linux Mint is 22/100 and Debian 34/100. DistroWatch also reports 33.7K Wikipedia reads for Ubuntu and 22.1K for Mint over 30 days. These are indicators reported by that ranking, not a census of Linux users or installations.
Rank #2
- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
The gap is a reminder to check the date and method before repeating a claim that one distro is “the most popular.” A page-hit list can reflect curiosity; search interest reflects a different kind of attention. Neither settles which operating system will suit a particular computer or task.

Choose for the work you need to do, the update approach you are comfortable maintaining, and whether the system supports your hardware—not simply its position in a popularity chart. DistroWatch’s comparison guide groups recommendations around beginner use, gaming, older laptops, developer work, servers, privacy, immutable systems, and Windows-like desktops. It identifies Linux Mint (Cinnamon), Zorin OS, and Kubuntu as options with familiar taskbar, start-menu, and system-tray conventions for people seeking a Windows-like desktop.
Rank #3
- [ULTRA-RUGGED DESIGN] MIL-STD-810G and IP65 certified. Built to survive 6-foot drops, heavy rain, and extreme vibrations. Features a magnesium alloy chassis with an integrated carry handle for maximum portability
- [4G LTE - WORK ANYWHERE] Integrated 4G LTE Multi-Carrier Mobile Broadband. Stay connected to the internet in remote areas or on the road without relying on Wi-Fi or phone hotspots. True mobile freedom for field professionals
- [1200-NIT SUNLIGHT READABLE] 13.1" XGA Touchscreen with CircuLumin technology. At 1200 nits, it is nearly 4x brighter than a standard laptop, ensuring perfect visibility under direct, intense sunlight
- [LINUX UBUNTU PRE-INSTALLED] Fast, secure, and bloatware-free. Optimized for developers, network engineers, and diagnostic software that thrives in a stable, open-source environment
- [LEGACY SERIAL PORT] Features a native RS-232 Serial Port, HDMI, and USB 3.0. Essential for connecting directly to industrial machinery, CNCs, and automotive diagnostic tools without unreliable adapter
- For a familiar desktop: Linux Mint (Cinnamon), Zorin OS, and Kubuntu are named as choices with conventional desktop elements. Familiarity does not guarantee that every application or peripheral will work exactly as it did on Windows.
- For gaming, development, servers, privacy, or older hardware: treat these as separate requirements. The appropriate choice depends on the software, hardware, and maintenance needs involved; the HPD order alone does not identify a winner for any of them.
- For update preferences: distinguish a stable-release model from rolling or atomic approaches, and consider how much update maintenance you want. Confirm the current release and support terms for the specific distro and version before installing.
- For any computer: check graphics, Wi-Fi, sleep behavior, processor architecture, and installation requirements against the exact hardware. A distro’s general popularity is not proof of compatibility with an individual device.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: a version-specific support and installation example
Ubuntu illustrates why version numbers matter. Canonical dates Ubuntu 26.04 LTS to April 23, 2026. It says the release receives five years of security updates and critical bug fixes through April 2031; Ubuntu Pro provides access to ESM updates for ten years. These dates and terms apply to this Ubuntu LTS release and should not be generalized to the other distributions in the ranking.
For a comfortable Ubuntu 26.04 desktop, Canonical recommends a dual-core 2 GHz processor or better, at least 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage. It notes that Ubuntu flavors such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu may suit systems with 2 GB of RAM or more. Those are Ubuntu-specific recommendations, not universal Linux minimums.

Check the distribution’s own installation instructions and hardware support before replacing an existing operating system; back up important files first.
