What CBS and Romo announced
CBS Sports said the decision was mutual and thanked Romo for nine years with the network. Romo said he plans to take a break to focus on his health and family before pursuing his next opportunity. He did not announce a next job or a return date.

CBS’s statement, reported by CBS Sports, read: “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”

- 2017: Romo began as CBS’s lead NFL game analyst.
- July 23, 2026: Romo was arrested following a traffic stop in Wisconsin. CBS Sports reported that the stop was in Milwaukee while he was driving south on Interstate 43.
- July 31, 2026: CBS placed Romo on leave, according to CBS Sports.
- September 1, 2026: Romo pleaded no contest to an operating-while-intoxicated charge, according to The Associated Press and CBS Sports.
- October 2, 2026: CBS and Romo announced they had mutually agreed to part ways.
AP reported, citing Milwaukee County court records, that Romo lost his driving privileges for six months and was ordered to complete an alcohol assessment program. Those details come from AP’s account of the court records, not CBS’s separation statement.

Who will replace Romo on CBS?
For the remainder of the 2026 season, JJ Watt will continue alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS’s lead NFL broadcast team. CBS said its other broadcast teams would remain unchanged. The network has not announced a permanent, longer-term successor beyond this season’s arrangement.
What is confirmed about the reason for the split?
The public statements establish that CBS and Romo called the separation mutual, and the reporting documents the sequence of arrest, leave, plea and departure. The timing does not prove the arrest was the sole reason for the employment decision. CBS’s announcement did not explain the private reasoning, and the reports do not disclose contract terms, severance or a settlement.

Before the separation was announced, AP reported that CBS Sports president David Berson said there was no timeline for a decision and that the network was assessing an evolving situation. That described the earlier interim period; it does not explain the final decision.

“DUI” is familiar shorthand in headlines, but the Wisconsin charge in the reporting is formally described as operating while intoxicated, or OWI. Romo pleaded no contest to that charge. An arrest, a charge and a no-contest plea are distinct legal events, so they should not be recast as a conviction without a source establishing that specific legal outcome.
