Hindustan Times reported that Reno had been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), attributing that information to a fundraiser for him. Yale’s memorial did not mention the diagnosis, and the reviewed reports did not identify an official cause of death. The diagnosis is therefore a reported part of Reno’s health story—not an established explanation for his death.
What has been reported about Reno’s illness and death?
The Associated Press, in a report carried by The Washington Post on October 2, 2026, said Reno died at 52 and that no cause of death had been given. Hindustan Times, in an October 3 report, said he had been diagnosed with CJD in 2025, citing wording attributed to a fundraiser for him. The underlying fundraiser wording was not independently verified in the reviewed material.

Those are distinct claims: a report of a diagnosis does not establish what caused a person’s death. Yale’s October 2 memorial announced Reno’s death but did not discuss CJD. The reviewed accounts provide no confirmed details about his symptoms, diagnostic tests, CJD subtype, or care.

The AP reported that Reno had been on medical leave since the end of the previous season and resigned in February for health reasons. Hindustan Times’ report of a 2025 CJD diagnosis provides context for those health struggles, but the available accounts do not establish the precise relationship between the diagnosis, his leave, and his resignation.

Who was Tony Reno at Yale?
Reno led Yale football for 14 seasons. The university’s memorial credits him with five Ivy League championships—2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025—and 83 career wins, the second-highest total in program history. It also notes that his teams beat Harvard seven times in his final nine meetings with the Crimson.
Yale’s memorial remembered him as a coach and member of the university community. Athletics director Victoria M. “Vicky” Chun said, “Tony Reno devoted his life to serving others and approached every day with humility, compassion, and purpose.” The university said he is survived by his wife, Toni, and their children, Dante, Angelina, and Vince.

What is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes CJD as a rare, rapidly progressive and always-fatal neurodegenerative disorder believed to be caused by prions: abnormal proteins that can cause normal proteins in the brain to misfold. CJD is not one of the common causes of dementia, and the general statistics about its course cannot be used to infer an individual person’s experience.

The CDC’s January 2026 clinical overview estimates that CJD occurs at about 1–2 cases per million people each year in the United States and many other countries. The CDC’s public information says about 500–600 cases are reported annually in the United States. The clinical overview places approximately 85% of cases in the sporadic category, 5–15% in the familial category, and less than 1% in the iatrogenic category. These are population-level figures; they do not establish which type, if any, Reno had.

How CJD types differ
Sporadic, familial, and iatrogenic CJD
In the CDC’s categories, sporadic CJD accounts for most cases; familial CJD is associated with inherited risk; and iatrogenic CJD is associated with transmission through particular medical exposures. The available reporting does not identify Reno’s subtype, so none of these categories can be applied to his case.
Classic CJD is not variant CJD
Classic CJD and variant CJD (vCJD) are distinct conditions. The CDC associates vCJD with eating beef from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). It says classic CJD is not caused by BSE. Calling classic CJD “mad cow disease” blurs that distinction and is not an accurate shorthand for Reno’s reported diagnosis.
Rank #4
Symptoms, evaluation, and confirmation
The CDC lists dementia as a primary symptom of CJD. Early neurological signs can include difficulty walking, sudden jerky movements, and visual disturbances. These general signs are not evidence about Reno’s symptoms; no personal symptom history was established in the reviewed accounts.

The CDC describes clinical criteria for classifying sporadic CJD as possible, probable, or definite. Those evaluation steps and categories are not interchangeable: CDC says confirmation requires neuropathologic and/or immunodiagnostic testing of brain tissue obtained by biopsy or autopsy.
Treatment and expected course
The CDC says there is no specific therapy shown to stop CJD’s progression. Care is supportive and intended to improve comfort. Its clinical overview gives a median decline of 4–5 months after symptoms begin. That is a population-level statistic, not a timeline for Reno; the reviewed reports do not establish when his symptoms began or how his illness progressed.
