Choose a method by the finished shape you want and how much cutting or messy prep you’re comfortable with.
Choose a toilet paper roll fall tree method

The tutorials do not provide a controlled comparison of cost, time, or cleanup. The paint-dot version avoids a separate printed canopy; the shaving-cream method has more stages and uses a tray, while the slotted method requires fitting separate cardboard pieces together.
Make a freestanding paint-dot fall tree
This is a direct option when you want the tree itself to stand on a table. Acrylic Painting School’s tutorial suggests it for ages 2–5 with adult help; that is the tutorial’s recommendation, not a general age or safety standard.
Gather
- Empty cardboard tubes
- Pencil and scissors
- Green, yellow, red, and orange paint
- Cotton swabs, a paintbrush, and a paper plate or palette
Steps
- Flatten a tube and draw a tree shape that includes a base for standing.
- Cut along the outline, keeping the sides connected at one point so the tube remains joined.
- Open the tube shape and adjust the base until the tree can stand.
- Use cotton swabs to dab seasonal paint colors onto the tree as leaves.
Acrylic Painting School also suggests finger painting, a paper towel, or a sponge instead of cotton swabs. Children can name the colors, count paint dots, or line up several trees to talk about seasonal change; these are activity ideas rather than established developmental outcomes.

Print a colorful canopy with shaving cream
Kids Activity Zone describes a separate canopy made from a colored shaving-cream print and attached to a cardboard tube. Its tutorial gives 30 minutes as the print’s drying interval; that is the page’s instruction, not an independently measured guarantee.
Gather
- Tray or other flat surface and shaving cream
- Food coloring
- Cardstock and a canopy template
- Spatula and scissors
- Cardboard tube
- Hot glue, or crafting glue as the tutorial’s alternative
Steps
- Spread shaving cream over the tray and swirl food coloring through it.
- Press the cardstock canopy shape into the colored shaving cream.
- Scrape away excess shaving cream and let the print dry for 30 minutes, as the tutorial instructs.
- Cut out the canopy and attach it to the tube trunk.
For a less involved canopy finish, the same tutorial suggests dabbing acrylic paint onto the canopy with a cotton ball instead.

Assemble a tree with a slotted cardboard canopy
Frugal Fun For Boys and Girls describes making a trunk from a tube and inserting a separate corrugated-cardboard canopy into slits cut in it. Paint the pieces, fit the canopy into the slits, and use hot glue or craft glue to secure the assembly. Buttons and felt are optional decorations, not necessary parts of the construction.
Make a flat stamped fall tree picture
For artwork instead of a standing craft, Life Over C’s method uses a paper trunk and paint-stamped leaves. Cut a trunk from brown construction paper, glue it to paper or cardstock, then dip the end of a toilet-paper or paper-towel roll in paint and stamp around the trunk to make the canopy. The tutorial lists preschool, kindergarten, and first grade as recommended levels.

Prepare the craft for different ages
- For toddlers or children who are not cutting, an adult can prepare the tree or canopy shapes. Kids Activity Zone’s printed-canopy method includes cutting, while Acrylic Painting School’s tree requires cutting the tube.
- For children practicing cutting, Acrylic Painting School recommends child-safe scissors and adult help. Follow the instructions for the specific project rather than treating the tutorial’s age guidance as a formal safety standard.
- Keep decorations optional. The basic versions use a reused tube, paint, and paper or cardboard; the slotted-canopy tutorial also suggests buttons or felt.
An optional cereal decoration appears in an older Crafty Morning variation: colored cereal is glued onto a paper canopy, which is then fitted into slits in a tube. That tutorial explicitly says not to eat cereal once glue has been put on it. It is not needed for any of the methods above.
