How to play this Strands board
Strands is a daily word-search game on a six-by-eight letter grid. You trace adjacent letters with a continuous path, moving horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Every letter is used exactly once across the theme words and the spangram, so a word’s path also helps determine where the remaining answers can fit.
- Open the puzzle. Use the NYT website or the NYT Games app; a new Strands board is released each day.
- Read the theme. “Sailor’s guide” establishes the category before you begin searching.
- Find ordinary words first. Three valid non-theme words, such as THEN, WORLD or GREAT, earn a hint.
- Use a hint if needed. The game reveals letters for a theme word, but you still trace the complete path.
- Locate the spangram. LIGHTHOUSE spans opposite sides of the board and provides a framework for the remaining words.
- Finish the six theme words. Once BEACON, DOME, GALLERY, LANTERN, STAIRCASE and TOWER are found, the board is complete.
