Yes—photoreactive resin inks can be light-cured into designed tissue-engineering scaffolds, with control over pore shape and interconnection. But “resin ink” here means a purpose-formulated biomaterial, not ordinary consumer 3D-printer resin: printability, biological compatibility, mechanical performance and post-processing all affect whether a scaffold is useful.
What is resin ink for 3D bioprinting?
In this context, resin ink is a liquid, light-reactive biomaterial that hardens selectively when exposed to light. The cured material may form a polymer network or a hydrogel scaffold. Vat photopolymerization is the broader family of methods; stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP) are two approaches used in scaffold research. A 2024 review describes additive manufacturing as a way to create complex biomedical structures, including tissue-engineering scaffolds, regenerative-medicine constructs and in-vitro disease models for drug testing (Dhand, Davidson and Burdick, Nature Reviews Bioengineering).

Not every 3D-printer resin is a bioink. A material intended for a biomedical construct must be selected and formulated for the biological use as well as for the printing process; a resin that cures into a clean shape is not automatically suitable for cells or tissue engineering.

Yes. SLA and DLP can cure a designed pattern layer by layer to create scaffold architectures with controlled pore size, shape and interconnectivity. The 2018 review by Chartrain, Williams and Whittington says SLA “offers unprecedented control over scaffold porosity and permeability, as well as pore size, shape, and interconnectivity.” The authors also discuss vascular-network fabrication as a research opportunity. These are capabilities explored in research, not evidence that such constructs routinely produce clinical outcomes.

How SLA and DLP expose the resin
Both methods use light to cure a photoreactive liquid, but their patterning workflows differ. SLA scans or traces the pattern; DLP projects a layer pattern. The distinction affects how a design is exposed, but it does not by itself determine whether the resulting scaffold will be biologically appropriate or mechanically adequate.
Resolution and architecture
A 2020 review of biomaterial inks reports possible SLA resolution of 20 μm and DLP resolution of 25–50 μm across the literature it reviewed. These are method-specific reported figures, not guaranteed specifications for every printer, ink or cell-containing workflow. Resolution is only one consideration: pore geometry and interconnection, material behavior and post-processing also matter.

What materials are used for SLA or DLP tissue scaffolds?
Reviews describe several photocurable material families used in scaffold research. Their properties vary by formulation, so none can be treated as a universal best choice.
| Material family | What to consider |
|---|---|
| PEG-based photocurable polymers | Assess printability alongside mechanical behavior, degradation and suitability for the intended cell or tissue application. |
| Poly(vinyl alcohol) methacrylate (PVA methacrylate) | Its performance depends on formulation and processing; evaluate biological compatibility and scaffold properties for the specific workflow. |
| Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) | Consider printability, mechanical properties, degradation and cell interaction together rather than assuming one feature predicts overall suitability. |
| Methacrylated hyaluronic acid | As with other photocurable biomaterials, suitability depends on the formulation and the biological and printing requirements. |
The 2020 materials review discusses these examples and the trade-offs involved in choosing a biomaterial ink. A material must work both as a printable resin and as part of the intended biological construct; those requirements can pull selection in different directions (2020 review of biomaterial inks).

How to judge whether a resin scaffold approach fits
There is no universal best printer or material established by these reviews. Compare the candidate workflow against the actual scaffold and biological goal:
- Exposure method: Determine whether the process scans a pattern, as in SLA, or projects a layer pattern, as in DLP.
- Architecture and feature size: Check whether the method can create the needed pore geometry and interconnection; do not treat a reported resolution figure as a guarantee for a particular setup.
- Resin chemistry: Verify that the formulation is intended for the biological use, not merely that it is marketed as a printable photopolymer.
- Mechanical properties and degradation: Consider whether the cured scaffold’s strength and degradation behavior match the application.
- Cell viability and interaction: Evaluate compatibility in the intended workflow; print success alone does not establish cell suitability.
- Post-processing: Account for the steps required after exposure and how they affect the construct and its biological use.
The 2025 review on lithography-based hydrogel printing provides a current broad discussion of the field, while the 2018 scaffold and 2020 biomaterial-ink reviews supply foundational context (Nature Reviews Bioengineering, 2025).

What remains difficult for tissue-scaffold applications?
Bone-scaffold research illustrates the gap between laboratory fabrication and clinical requirements. The 2020 review describes difficulty achieving the mechanical strength and scale needed for clinical application, particularly with single-material constructs. Multimaterial designs are proposed as a research direction, not a proven solution (2020 review of 3D-printed bone scaffolds).
