If you want audiobooks without another subscription, start with your public library: Libby and Hoopla let patrons borrow titles at no cost when their library participates. For older classics, LibriVox offers free recordings of public-domain books. The catch is that none works like an unlimited catalog of current Audible releases: library selections vary locally, while LibriVox focuses on books in the public domain.
How to choose a free Audible alternative
These are editorial picks based on how each service provides access—not personal test results. Your best option depends on what you want to hear and what you can access:

- Current or popular titles: Check your library’s Libby and Hoopla catalogs. Availability depends on the library, and a title may have a waitlist or be absent.
- Older classics without a library card: Browse LibriVox, which distributes volunteer recordings of public-domain books.
- Convenience within Spotify: Audiobooks are included only with select paid Premium plans in the United States, so Spotify is not a free standalone alternative.
Libby: borrow audiobooks with a library card
Libby is a strong first stop if you have a valid card from a library that uses OverDrive. The app is free, and there is no subscription charge or late fee for its digital loans. You can stream a title or download it for offline listening; loans are returned automatically when they are due. Learn about borrowing with Libby.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat to check before borrowing
Your library—not Libby—sets its catalog, loan periods, and limits on how many items you can borrow at once. Some books may not be offered, and popular titles may have a wait. Search for your library in Libby and check its catalog and lending rules before counting on a specific audiobook.
Hoopla: another library-card option
Hoopla also offers audiobooks at no cost to patrons whose libraries participate. Its app supports online listening and mobile downloads for offline playback. Hoopla lists controls including playback speed from 0.5x to 4x, sleep timers, and bookmarks with notes. See Hoopla’s audiobook service details.
Confirm your library’s catalog
Hoopla’s featured titles show what the service offers, not what every library makes available to its patrons. Check whether your library participates and search its local catalog for the book you want. Local selection and access rules can differ.
LibriVox: volunteer recordings of public-domain books
LibriVox volunteers record books that are in the public domain, and the recordings are released for free. The organization describes its goal as: “To make all books in the public domain available, narrated by real people and distributed for free, in audio format on the internet.” Explore LibriVox.
Best for classics, not new releases
Because the collection is based on public-domain texts, LibriVox is useful for older classics, not a replacement for current copyrighted bestsellers. Recordings are made by volunteers, so narration styles vary; sample one if the narrator matters to you. LibriVox also cautions that older source texts may contain outdated language or antiquated or offensive ideas.

Spotify audiobooks are a paid-plan benefit
Spotify’s US audiobook page says select Premium plans include 15 hours of listening per month from a subscriber catalog it describes as containing more than 700,000 titles. Unused hours expire monthly. The page also lists a paid Audiobooks Access plan and individual title purchases through the Spotify Web Player. These are paid access routes, not free audiobook access through Spotify’s music tier. Check Spotify’s US audiobook plan details.
Plan eligibility and availability can vary by location and change over time, so check Spotify’s current terms for your country before subscribing.
