We could not locate the originating article, a developer page, or any source that names the seven tools, so this article does not treat that claim as established. What we can offer is a more useful map: “Adobe alternatives” covers several different jobs, community members name different tools for each job, and a switch should be tested on real work before a subscription is cancelled.
What the headline claims, and what we could confirm
The headline makes three separate claims: that a single developer is responsible, that the total is seven tools, and that those tools were built with AI. None of the three could be tied to a named person, a product page, or a dated announcement. The sources we could find are thinner than the headline suggests:

- An index page on Unstore titled “Alternatives” that lists many unrelated entries. It does not identify a developer or the seven tools.
- A user-run thread in the r/FuckAdobe subreddit, “Need help expanding this Adobe alternatives list!”, posted 30 September 2026. It is community discussion, not an official product source or an independent test, and the tool names in it are suggestions.
Until the originating story or the developer’s own materials are published, treat the seven-tool framing as unverified. The guidance below does not depend on it.
“Adobe alternatives” is several different jobs
Someone replacing Photoshop is not solving the same problem as someone replacing Premiere Pro, and a tool that covers one of those jobs well may be weak at the other. The community thread names tools across six kinds of work. The table pairs each job with the Adobe app it is usually compared against and the tools the thread mentioned.
#1 Best Overall
- Type a description to create all-new images and backgrounds or add anything to your photos with the power of generative AI.
- Count on AI and automation to easily erase distractions, replace backgrounds, touch up faces, and change colors in photos or quickly trim and adjust video footage.
- Edit and enhance 360° and VR videos and create stop-motion movies.
- Get up and running fast and keep growing your skills with Quick, Guided, and Advanced editing modes.
- Enhance your pics with eGects, text, graphics, and animation, and amp up the action in your videos with eGects, transitions, expressive text, motion titles, music, animations, and color grading presets.
| Job | Adobe app usually compared | Tools named in the September 2026 thread | What to verify with your own files |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raster photo and image editing | Photoshop | GIMP, Krita, Affinity (the thread did not say which Affinity app) | Layers, masks, adjustment layers, and colour profiles |
| Vector illustration | Illustrator | Inkscape, Affinity (same caveat as above) | Editable text, path precision, and colour handling for print |
| Page layout | InDesign | Scribus | Master pages, linked images, and print-ready PDF export |
| Video editing | Premiere Pro | DaVinci Resolve, Kdenlive, Shotcut | Camera codecs, frame rates, and whether project files import |
| Visual effects and 3D | After Effects (partial overlap only) | Blender, which the thread did not tie to a specific Adobe app | Motion graphics templates and any plugins your work relies on |
| Audio editing | Audition | Audacity | Multitrack editing, plugin support, and export formats |
The names are a starting shortlist, not a verdict. Commenters in the thread disagreed about how far each tool goes, and feature depth can only be judged against your own projects.
Free, open source, and professional-ready are separate questions
The thread uses “free,” “open source,” and “good enough for paid work” as if they described one property. They do not. A tool can cost nothing and still lack a feature your workflow depends on. Open-source licensing governs how you may use and modify the code; it says little about whether a client, printer, or studio will accept the files it produces.

- Existing subscribers must first complete current membership term before linking new subscription term
- With Photoshop, you can create and enhance photographs, illustrations, and 3D artwork
- Design websites and mobile apps
- Edit videos, simulate real-life paintings, and more
We did not verify current licence terms or prices for any tool named here. Check each project’s own licence page and download notice before building a workflow around it.
What to check before switching
Three concerns came up most often in the thread. Those were observations from community members, not measured results, so each one should be tested on your own files.
Rank #3
- Quickly trim and adjust footage with the power of AI and automation.
- Get started in a snap and grow your skills with Quick, Guided, and Advanced editing modes.
- Edit and enhance 360° and VR videos and create stop-motion movies.
- Enhance the action with effects, transitions, expressive text, motion titles, music, and animations.
- Get your colors just right with easy color correction tools and color grading presets.
File compatibility
Ask whether the tool opens your existing project files, not only flat exports. Layered Photoshop files, Illustrator artwork with live text, and InDesign documents with linked images each lose different information. Confirm which elements survive a round trip, and which become flattened or unlinked.
Operating system support
Commenters raised operating-system support as a concern. Confirm each tool’s listed platforms and minimum versions on its official download page before you install it, rather than relying on a forum post.
Rank #4
- Make your photos look better than ever with Lightroom (desktop, mobile, and web), and Lightroom Classic (desktop).
- Quick Actions instantly give you suggestions tailored to your photo so you can get the look you want.
- Remove anything in a click. Make distractions vanish with Generative Remove, powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI.
- Edit Lightroom images in Firefly using simple prompts and create stunning videos directly with images.
- Quickly improve image quality using generative upscale with Topaz Gigapixel, now including powerful 4x upscaling.
Collaboration and handoff
If a client, printer, or colleague needs a specific format, the handoff is part of the workflow. Professional collaboration was another concern raised in the thread. Make sure the exact file type you must deliver comes out cleanly from the replacement tool.
Test one real project before you cancel
- Choose one finished project and one in-progress file. The finished project shows what the output must match; the in-progress file shows what you actually do every day.
- Open the original Adobe-format file in the candidate tool. Note which layers, text objects, masks, and linked assets remain editable.
- Export every deliverable format your client or printer requires. Compare each export against the Adobe-made version at 100% zoom, and on the screen or print setup your audience will use.
- Make a change in the candidate tool, save it, and reopen it in the Adobe app if you still have access, to check the round trip.
- Time the whole task from opening the file to delivering the output. List every feature you used that was missing or behaved differently.
- Keep the subscription active until steps 2 through 5 pass for the work you actually do.
How to check a future list of tools
If you encounter a new claim about a developer and a set of tools, look for the following before relying on it:
Quick Recap
- A named developer, with a dated announcement or a product page you can open.
- Official download and licence pages for each tool, rather than aggregator listings.
- Release notes or a changelog showing the tool is still maintained.
- A plain statement of what AI did in the build, such as generated code, generated interface text, or something else. “Built with AI” alone does not tell you whether the tool works for professional files.
