Surviving horde night in 7 Days to Die is mainly a preparation and path-control problem. Build a small position you can repair, give zombies one predictable approach, layer traps and walls, and keep an escape route. During the siege, fight from a maintainable opening, repair damage before the breach spreads, eliminate screamer zombies quickly, and retreat to your inner layer when the outer position fails.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Use the days before the first horde as a planning window rather than trying to finish an oversized fortress. Difficulty, progression and settings change how much pressure your base receives, so there is no universally safe design or fixed zombie count.

New players often spend too many resources on a large main base and then discover that they cannot finish, reinforce or repair it. The official Beginners Guide recommends starting with a small build; it gives a hut with a trench and spikes as an example of an affordable early defense. A compact position also makes your ammunition, repair materials and attention go further.
The official Zombie guidance is blunt: Build layered defenses to rely on should a Zombie Horde occur
, and Generally, a base is never perfectly safe from zombies.
Treat those statements as operating rules. Your goal is not an indestructible building. Your goal is to delay the horde, keep enemies in a lane you can attack, and preserve a second position if the first one collapses.

- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- A must-have for collectors and fans of Open-World Survival Horror, the 7 Days to Die – Console Edition Survival Bundle includes the following: An exclusive Artbook with over 100 pages showcasing never-before-seen illustrations of the zombie apocalypse, a CD featuring the haunting Original Soundtrack (OST) of the game, a double-sided poster, Fine art prints x3, Sticker sheets x 3, the physical game, and a collectible tuck-in box housing all the contents.
Horde pressure varies with game settings and progression. Do not design around a promised number of enemies or assume a layout that works in one world will work unchanged in another. Leave yourself room to move and a route to abandon the fighting position.
Choose a base type you can actually maintain
Compare a location by more than its appearance. Before committing, ask whether you can reach damaged blocks safely, whether zombies have one obvious route, and whether a second layer exists behind the first.

| Option | Resource demand | Path control | Repair access | Fallback and upgrades |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary point of interest | Not stated in official guidance; depends on how much of the existing structure remains usable and how much you must reinforce. | Inspect the building first. Existing rooms may offer cover but can also provide several direct approaches. | Not stated; choose a position where you can reach the exposed side without entering the horde. | Often limited unless you add an inner room, roof position or separate exit. Plan that fallback before the event. |
| Compact trench-and-spike base | Designed for early materials; the Beginners Guide presents a small hut, trench and spikes as an option when resources are limited. | A trench and a single mouth can slow enemies and keep them in front of you. | Leave enough room to replace spikes and repair the wall from behind cover. | Add a second wall or inner position as materials improve; exact upgrade capacity is not stated. |
| Dedicated horde base | Not stated; it can consume substantially more building and repair materials than a temporary position. | Best suited to a deliberately built funnel or trap hallway with one controlled entrance. | Build a fighting opening wide enough to attack and work on damaged blocks without exposing yourself unnecessarily. | Provides the clearest room for stronger blocks, additional traps, power or turrets later, but should not replace a fallback route. |
For a first horde, the compact option is usually the sensible target: it can be completed, inspected and repaired before the event. A temporary structure is acceptable when you have little time, but remove or block alternate approaches rather than trusting the building’s original layout.
Build one controlled approach
The official Defense Tactics guidance describes trap-filled hallways that force approaching zombies toward a controlled mouth. Recreate that principle with materials you can replace.

- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
- Pick the fighting side. Decide where you will stand and which wall, hatch or opening will separate you from the approach. Do not let the horde reach you from several equally direct directions.
- Create a funnel. Use walls, a trench, poles or hatches to make one obvious lane. Keep the lane narrow enough to concentrate enemies, but wide enough for you to attack and repair.
- Add an outer delay layer. Wood spikes or another affordable trap layer buys time and damages enemies before they reach the wall. Place it where you can inspect and replace it from safety.
- Build the inner wall. The first wall is not your only defense. A second wall, room or elevated fighting position gives you time to retreat when the outer layer is damaged.
- Make the mouth repairable. Leave a protected angle or opening from which you can replace traps and repair blocks. A trap that cannot be reached during the siege is a one-use obstacle.
- Reserve a fallback route. Create an inner position or exit that does not send you through the densest part of the approach. Keep it open and usable; do not fill it with storage or decorative blocks.
- Check for alternate paths. Walk around the structure before horde night and identify weak walls, open ground and climbable approaches. Block or reinforce routes that would bypass your funnel.
Prepare equipment, ammunition and repairs
Daytime is your preparation period. The official game description summarizes it as the time to loot, mine, craft and strengthen base defenses while zombies are slower and weaker. Early-game guidance also emphasizes securing shelter and carrying a basic weapon.
- Primary weapon: Bring the weapon you can use accurately and keep supplied, not merely the one with the highest theoretical damage.
- Backup weapon: A second weapon or alternate attack prevents a single broken, empty or inconvenient weapon from ending the defense.
- Ammunition or consumables: Carry what your selected weapons require, with enough reserve for a longer-than-expected fight. The sources do not establish a universal quantity; settings, loot and play style change the requirement.
- Healing items: Keep healing accessible on your action bar so an injury does not force you to search storage while enemies are at the wall.
- Building blocks: Carry blocks for emergency patching, closing a breach or sealing an unwanted route.
- Repair materials: Stock the materials needed by your walls, traps and weapons. Repairs and trap replacement are routine siege work, not evidence that the design failed.
- Light and mobility: Keep the fighting lane visible and leave enough space to reposition. A cramped firing point can become a trap for the player as soon as blocks break.
Finish repairs before the horde begins. Put reserve supplies where you can reach them without abandoning the fighting mouth, and avoid filling the same access route with containers or nonessential objects.

A practical preparation schedule before Day 7
The official Defense Tactics page gives one example progression: obtain a forge and steel tools by Day 4, then aim for a crossbow by Day 7, assuming you can keep repairs up. This is an example rather than a requirement. World settings, multiplayer, loot and game version can make that schedule easier or harder.
Days 1–2: secure shelter and a workable position
- Choose a small temporary location or mark the site for a compact base.
- Secure a basic weapon and the materials needed for an initial wall, trench, spikes or other delay layer.
- Identify one approach and a separate fallback route immediately; do not wait until the structure is finished to discover that every side is exposed.
- Loot and gather during daylight, then use the safer period to place blocks and remove obvious alternate entrances.
Days 3–4: establish production and the first layers
- Build the first wall, funnel and outer trap layer before investing in cosmetic construction.
- Use the wiki’s forge-and-steel-tools-by-Day-4 example as a progression target only if your settings and resources support it.
- Test whether you can reach the mouth to repair it while remaining behind the inner layer.
- Store or carry repair materials rather than spending every resource on a larger footprint.
Days 5–6: reinforce, simplify and rehearse
- Replace weak or damaged blocks and add the second wall or inner fighting position.
- Close paths that compete with your funnel. Zombies should encounter one deliberate route, not a maze of equally attractive targets.
- Confirm that your fallback route is open, visible and not dependent on a block you might accidentally destroy during combat.
- Craft or find your backup weapon, ammunition and healing supplies. If you use a crossbow, the Day-7 example assumes you can also maintain the base and its traps.
Day 7: perform a final systems check
- Repair every damaged wall, hatch, pole and trap before the event.
- Place building blocks, ammunition, healing and repair materials where you can reach them quickly.
- Walk the perimeter once more and remove anything that creates an accidental alternate route.
- Decide in advance which inner position you will use if the outer lane fails. A preselected retreat is faster than improvising while surrounded.
How to fight when the horde arrives
Hold the controlled mouth
Stay at the repairable fighting opening and keep enemies in the funnel. The purpose of the lane is to reduce the number of directions you must watch. Attack through the opening, then check the traps and wall before damage turns into a breach.

Repair continuously
Do not wait for the outer layer to disappear. Replace destroyed spikes and repair damaged blocks whenever the pressure briefly drops. The official guidance treats repairs and trap replacement as normal duties because no base remains perfectly safe throughout a siege.
React to screamers immediately
The official tactics page warns that screamer zombies can create more enemies. When one appears, prioritize it before allowing the surrounding pressure to grow. Keep your firing position and fallback route clear while you deal with the new threat.
Retreat before the collapse
If the outer layer fails, move to the inner layer or fallback route instead of standing in a collapsing position. Carrying building blocks lets you close a breach or redirect the approach, but do not spend so long repairing an exposed opening that you lose the chance to escape.
Common mistakes and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely design mistake | Fix before the next horde |
|---|---|---|
| Zombies reach different sides at once | No single controlled approach. | Block competing routes and rebuild the approach as a funnel with one mouth. |
| Traps disappear and cannot be replaced safely | The trap layer was placed outside repair access. | Move or redesign it so you can work from behind the inner wall or protected opening. |
| The base consumes all available materials | The footprint is too large for current progression. | Downsize to a compact hut, trench and spikes, then add layers as materials become available. |
| A breach becomes an immediate death sentence | No second wall or fallback route. | Add an inner position and keep an independent exit open and uncluttered. |
| Your weapon becomes unusable mid-fight | No backup weapon, ammunition or repair supplies. | Carry an alternate weapon and prepare consumables and repairs before the event. |
| Enemy numbers suddenly increase | A screamer was left alive long enough to create more pressure. | Prioritize screamers and keep the firing lane clear while eliminating them. |
When to abandon a position
Use a simple decision rule: stay while the funnel is intact, the fighting opening is repairable and the inner route remains available. Leave when the approach reaches the wall faster than you can repair it, when multiple sides are exposed, or when the retreat route is about to be blocked. Falling back is not a failure of the base; it is the reason the second layer exists.
After the horde, repair before expanding. Inspect every layer, identify which route failed, replace the traps that bought time, and then decide whether the next upgrade should improve path control, repair access or fallback depth. The strongest long-term base is the one you can maintain between events, not the largest structure you can place in a single day.
