Short answer: TinyMCE 8’s codesample plugin provides a dialog for inserting syntax-highlighted snippets and choosing a programming language. Prism’s separate Line Numbers and Copy to Clipboard Button plugins add code-block features outside TinyMCE’s editor controls. TinyMCE’s toolbar copy button copies the current editor selection; it is not documented as a per-code-block copy button.
To build this setup reliably, configure the Code Sample language list first, load Prism as TinyMCE documents, then verify that your rendered <pre><code> markup, Prism scripts and styles, and any copy-button integration work together in your deployment.
What “language” means in TinyMCE 8
The word language refers to two different TinyMCE features:
- Code Sample programming-language selector: the menu used when inserting a snippet, configured with
codesample_languages. - Content language: TinyMCE’s
languagecontrol, which applies configured language tags to selected content. It is unrelated to the programming-language value attached to a code sample. See TinyMCE’s content localization options.
This article uses “language” primarily for the Code Sample selector.

Enable Code Sample and choose the language menu
TinyMCE describes Code Sample as allowing users to insert syntax-color-highlighted snippets into the editable area. The plugin name is codesample. A minimal configuration enables the plugin and exposes its toolbar control:

</script>For a production Tiny Cloud deployment, replace no-api-key with your API key. TinyMCE’s Cloud quick start notes that an unregistered or invalid key produces a domain-registration notice.
Use codesample_languages to control the choices shown in the dialog. Each entry is an object with a display label (text) and the Prism language value (value):

});The text is what authors see; the value becomes the language identifier used for highlighting. Add only languages your page’s Prism build supports, or load the required Prism language components.

How TinyMCE and Prism perform highlighting
TinyMCE’s Code Sample guide requires Prism.js and prism.css to be present on the page for syntax highlighting. The guide also documents codesample_global_prismjs, which defaults to false.

Use TinyMCE’s normal Prism handling
Follow the Code Sample documentation’s script and stylesheet arrangement when you do not need to share a Prism instance with other site code. Keep the Prism CSS loaded wherever the rendered editor content is displayed; otherwise the language class may be present but the colors will not appear.
Use a global Prism installation
Set codesample_global_prismjs: true when your page already loads Prism globally, and load Prism language add-ons alongside TinyMCE:

});This option is useful when your site maintains one Prism build with additional languages. It does not automatically guarantee that every language listed in the dialog is available; the corresponding Prism component still has to be loaded.

Add line numbers with Prism’s separate plugin
Line numbers are not a Code Sample toolbar option. Prism’s Line Numbers plugin works on block code built from <pre><code>. Load the plugin’s JavaScript and stylesheet, then ensure the relevant pre element—or an ancestor—has the line-numbers class:

</pre>Prism also documents no-line-numbers for disabling numbering in a subtree. Use data-start on the pre element when numbering should begin at a value other than 1. For soft-wrapped lines, the plugin documentation calls out white-space: pre-line or white-space: pre-wrap as supported approaches.
Inline <code> elements are not the target of this plugin. Whether TinyMCE emits the exact classes and markup your Prism setup expects must be checked in the browser after insertion, saving, sanitization, and reloading.

Copy button: editor selection versus code-block control
TinyMCE and Prism use “copy” for different scopes:

Adding copy to the TinyMCE toolbar is therefore not a way to place a copy icon on every Code Sample block:
toolbar: 'codesample | copy'That toolbar button copies whatever text the author has selected in the editor at the time. Prism separately lists a Copy to Clipboard Button plugin for code blocks. The documentation reviewed for this configuration does not establish universal end-to-end behavior for every TinyMCE 8 rendering setup, so test the generated markup, script order, styles, clipboard permissions, and any content sanitization in your own application before promising a per-block button.

A practical integration sequence
- Pin or select TinyMCE 8. Tiny Cloud supports a release-channel path such as
8and also minor or patch-version paths. It documents8-testingand8-devchannels as well. Choose a channel deliberately and verify the currently available version in Specify Editor Version & Plugins. - Enable Code Sample. Add
plugins: 'codesample'andtoolbar: 'codesample'; includecodeonly if you also want TinyMCE’s source-code view. - Define the language list. Map each visible label to a Prism value in
codesample_languages. - Load Prism and prism.css. Use the arrangement documented by TinyMCE, or set
codesample_global_prismjs: trueand load your global Prism build plus language components. - Inspect one inserted sample. Confirm the saved HTML contains the expected
pre,code, and language classes. Addline-numbersto the relevantpreelement or an ancestor. - Add Prism’s line-number assets. Load the Line Numbers plugin script and stylesheet, then test long lines, soft wrapping, and any
data-startvalue. - Choose the copy behavior explicitly. Use TinyMCE’s
copyfor selection copying. If you need a per-block control, integrate Prism’s Copy to Clipboard Button plugin (or your own button) and verify it against the actual rendered DOM. - Retest after persistence. Save, sanitize, render outside the editor, and reload the page. A class or script that works inside the editing page may be removed or unavailable in the public view.
Common failure modes
- The language appears but is not highlighted: Prism or
prism.cssis missing, loaded in the wrong document, or the selected language component is absent. - Line numbers do not appear: the Line Numbers assets are missing, or
line-numbersis not on the relevantpreelement or ancestor. - The editor toolbar copy button does not copy a whole snippet: that is expected when the selection is partial; TinyMCE documents it as selection copy, not block copy.
- A Prism copy button works in one view but not another: compare the rendered markup and asset loading in the editor, preview, and published page, and check clipboard permissions.
- Some languages fail while others work: add the matching Prism language component or remove that option from
codesample_languages.
