Not yet. A Johns Hopkins research team has developed magnetically guided millirobots that could deliver medicine directly to infected heart tissue, but the system has only been tested in a heart-shaped phantom and excised pig tissue. It has not treated a living patient, and no one-day treatment was demonstrated.
What the heart-infection robots are designed to do
The proposed system targets infective endocarditis, an infection of the heart’s inner lining or valves. Typical care involves weeks of intravenous antibiotics. The robots are intended to deliver medicine locally to infected tissue, rather than relying only on medicine reaching the site through the bloodstream.

The concept, described in the paper “Wireless Modular Millirobots With Magnetic Actuation for Targeted Cardiac Drug Delivery,” uses two cooperating modules. External magnetic fields guide them through the body in the proposed approach.
Two modules with different jobs
- Needle module: A barbed tip is designed to penetrate the target tissue and remain there as a docking point.
- Drug module: This module carries medicine, docks to the anchored needle module, and releases the drug locally.
The anchor-and-delivery design is intended to help the medicine reach a specific tissue location. The reported work does not establish that the robots can navigate to an infection in a living heart or that local delivery can control the infection.

What the researchers tested—and what they measured
The paper reports two kinds of preclinical testing: in vitro experiments in an agarose heart phantom under pulsatile flow, and ex vivo experiments using excised porcine heart tissue. These are laboratory test settings, not treatment in a living animal or person.
| Reported result | Test context | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| 66.7% reduction in penetration force | Needle module tested in cardiac-tissue-mimicking gels | A mechanical measurement of how much force was needed to penetrate the test material; it is not evidence of safer or more effective treatment in a patient. |
| 22 microliters delivered over 180 minutes | Drug module prototype test | A measured delivery volume and duration in the reported test, not a clinical dose, treatment schedule, or infection-control result. |
The study’s reported endpoints concern mechanical penetration and drug delivery. It does not report whether the system eliminates infection, prevents complications, or improves patient outcomes.

Why the “one day or less” claim is conditional
Johns Hopkins senior author Axel Krieger said, “If everything works well, you go from four to six weeks of treatment to one day or less.” That is a projection about what the technology might make possible if development succeeds; it is not a treatment-duration result from the study.
Before that possibility could be evaluated clinically, the system would need to show that it can reach and treat infected tissue in a living heart, deliver an effective medicine safely, and do so without unacceptable complications. The reported experiments do not establish those points or show that the approach could replace antibiotics or surgery.

What must happen next
The researchers told Johns Hopkins that their next planned tests will use more realistic phantom hearts that include muscle contraction and beating motion. Those tests would address a more challenging model than a static phantom, but they would still not establish human safety or effectiveness.
There is no evidence in the reported study that this is a clinically available treatment. The research is at an early, preclinical stage, and the one-day idea remains contingent on future testing.

How this compares with current treatment evidence
This research does not provide a head-to-head comparison with standard care. The distinction is the evidence stage and what was measured: current care involves weeks of intravenous antibiotics, while the robot study measured prototype penetration and drug release in laboratory and excised-tissue settings. It did not compare infection control or patient outcomes between targeted delivery and systemic treatment.
Johns Hopkins’ 2026 news report says about 50,000 people in the United States contract endocarditis each year. The report does not identify the estimate’s underlying source or data year, so it should be treated as a figure reported by the university, not as a dated incidence estimate independently established by the study.
