In a December 11, 2025 report, Futurism said a prominent “Ask me anything” AI panel on TIME’s website could cover page text, including a featured headline, and had no apparent close button. That is a contemporaneous report—not confirmation of how TIME’s site works today. The dispute was about both the interface and the idea behind it: TIME described the tool as a way to help readers explore its journalism, while a prominent critic objected to placing an AI layer between readers and journalists’ work.
What Futurism reported about the box
Futurism’s Frank Landymore reported on December 11, 2025, that TIME had introduced the feature in late November. In his account, the “Ask me anything” box sat near the lower center of the page, where it could obscure text and a featured headline. He said there was no apparent way to dismiss it; clicking its input field expanded it to fill the page. These details describe what the reporter observed then, not a verified current interface. INMA separately described a horizontal “Ask me anything” box that became sticky along the bottom of the screen after a reader began reading an article. The two accounts describe a prominent, persistent prompt, but neither establishes its present-day position or controls. INMA’s account
What TIME said the AI agent was for
TIME presented the feature as an agent for exploring its archive and journalism. Futurism reported that TIME described it as drawing on a 102-year archive and other assets to generate summaries, audio rundowns, and answers. That archive figure and those capabilities are part of TIME’s reported product description, not independently measured performance.
INMA says TIME described a system combining language understanding, voice synthesis, translation, search, summarization, and podcast generation. It reports initial coverage in politics and entertainment and content in 13 languages. Those details are attributed to INMA’s account, rather than independently tested results.

TIME editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs told Axios, as quoted by Futurism: “People spend hours and hours with agents, and hopefully this means that they will spend a lot more time with our journalism.” The stated aim, then, was to use an AI interface to encourage more engagement with TIME’s reporting.
What TIME said about editorial safeguards
INMA quotes TIME COO Mark Howard describing the agent as a way to “amplify editorial judgment.” The same account says TIME’s stated approach includes preserving author attribution and source citations, along with input filters and adversarial testing. These are descriptions of intended safeguards; the reporting does not independently assess whether they work as intended.

Why the interface drew criticism
Futurism quoted computational linguist Emily M. Bender of the University of Washington, author of The AI Con, criticizing both the AI presentation of journalism and its placement over the page. “Any journalistic outfit that values the work of their journalists wouldn’t offer to present it as papier-mâché,” she said of the chatbot, “and certainly wouldn’t put that offer in the way of the other bit of journalism their audience might be trying to read.” Futurism said Bender made the criticism on social media.
Her objection was not simply that TIME used AI. It was that an AI-generated route through journalism could be placed between readers and the work produced by journalists, while the reported panel could obstruct the journalism on the page. The tension is between offering another way to navigate articles and archives, and making that option harder to ignore than the original reporting.

What the reporting does—and does not—establish
- Interface behavior: Futurism reported an overlay that could obscure content and had no apparent dismissal control in its observation. This does not establish the feature’s current behavior.
- Product purpose and scope: TIME’s stated goal and the capabilities, archive size, language count, and initial topic coverage were reported by Futurism and INMA; they are not measured user outcomes.
- Safeguards: Attribution, citations, filters, and adversarial testing are described as TIME’s approach by INMA, not independently audited there.
- Audience impact: The cited reporting provides no named statistical study or measured user-outcome figure showing whether the tool increased engagement or improved access to journalism.
The available accounts also do not support a detailed product-by-product comparison with other news organizations. Useful questions for evaluating any newsroom AI feature include whether it obscures editorial content, whether readers can dismiss it, what tasks it performs, and how it attributes and cites sources.
