What the TIME recognition means
According to Samsung’s U.S. Newsroom announcement, TIME’s global network of expert contributors and editors evaluates inventions for originality, efficacy, ambition and impact. Samsung says this is the fourth appearance by a Galaxy device on the annual list.

The evidence establishes that the Galaxy S26 Ultra was named to the 2026 list. It does not establish a rank among the selected inventions, nor does it say that TIME independently endorsed every specification or performance claim in Samsung’s product release.

Privacy Display is the defining hardware idea
Samsung describes the Galaxy S26 Ultra as the first mobile phone with a built-in Privacy Display. The display changes how pixels disperse light: the person holding the phone sees a normal image, while people viewing from the side see substantially less. Unlike a stick-on privacy film, the feature is integrated into the panel and can be switched off.

Privacy Display works in portrait and landscape orientation. Settings can trigger it for a PIN entry, selected applications or notifications, or enable a stronger maximum-privacy mode across the device. Samsung cautions that effectiveness depends on viewing angle and brightness, and that some information may remain visible in certain conditions. It is therefore a privacy aid, not a guarantee that a screen is invisible to everyone nearby.
Hardware and software are presented as one system
Samsung pairs the display with a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, a redesigned vapor chamber intended to spread heat over a larger area, wider-aperture cameras, Super Steady video with horizontal lock, support for the APV professional-grade video codec and a set of Galaxy AI functions.

Samsung claims up to a 19% CPU improvement, a 39% NPU improvement and a 24% GPU improvement for the new processor. These are manufacturer claims rather than independent benchmark results. The larger vapor chamber is intended to help the phone sustain demanding workloads, but no independent thermal test accompanies the announcement.

Samsung specifies 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom distances and up to 100x digital zoom. Wider apertures are designed to admit more light for low-light photography. Video options include 4K at 120 frames per second in Pro Video and 8K at 30fps. Super Steady adds horizontal lock to help keep footage level, while APV is aimed at professional workflows that repeatedly edit and export video.
Galaxy AI features and everyday tasks
Contextual suggestions and editing
Now Nudge can suggest an action based on what is happening on the phone. Samsung’s example is surfacing recent Gallery images when a friend asks for them. Photo Assist accepts natural-language editing requests, and Creative Studio can turn sketches, photos or prompts into stickers, invitations and wallpapers.

Scanning and conversational control
Document Scan removes perspective distortion and can combine several images into one PDF. An upgraded Bixby, plus integrations with Gemini and Perplexity, is intended to support conversational device control and multi-step tasks. Availability of particular AI agents and functions may vary by market, language, account and software version.

Price, storage and availability
Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement listed a starting price of $1,299.99. The stated storage tiers are 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. U.S. general availability began March 11, 2026, with pre-orders offered through Amazon Stores and other retailers. Retail prices, promotions, colors, carrier support and stock can change, so buyers should verify the current listing for their market.

The advertised price does not include every ownership cost. Samsung says the power adapter is sold separately; buyers should also account for a case and any protection accessories. A conventional screen protector should not be described as reproducing the phone’s integrated Privacy Display effect.
Who should consider it
- Privacy-conscious commuters and professionals: the configurable side-angle restriction is the feature that most clearly separates this model from phones that depend only on software settings or external films.
- Mobile photographers and video creators: the 200MP main camera, dual telephotos, 4K/120fps Pro Video and 8K capture provide broad shooting options, while APV targets repeated editing workflows.
- Power users: the top processor tier, larger cooling hardware, 120Hz display, Wi-Fi 7 and long security-support commitment suit demanding, long-term use.
Buyers who mainly need basic messaging, web access or casual photos may not use the Ultra’s specialized privacy, zoom, video and AI capabilities enough to justify its premium starting price. Independent battery, camera and sustained-performance testing should be consulted before treating Samsung’s claimed gains as real-world results.
