Who created Tilly Norwood?
Tilly Norwood is an AI-generated character created by Dutch actress and technology founder Eline van der Velden, and associated with her companies Xicoia and Particle6. In an October 5, 2026 interview with Fast Company, van der Velden described Tilly as built on top of a large language model, with system prompts and guardrails. She said the character can respond in ways that surprise her.

Van der Velden says she expected the project to prompt discussion. She described the backlash as more pronounced in the United States than in the United Kingdom and said the project received threats; those are her accounts in the interview, not independently measured findings.

Van der Velden compares AI to a new paint and paintbrush: a technology creators should learn to use rather than ignore. She argues it could lower barriers to production and open opportunities for human collaborators, while insisting that compelling storytelling still depends on human craft. “I think it’s hugely important to make people sit up and listen and know what’s going on,” she told Fast Company.

That is her case for engaging with the technology, not proof that it has created jobs across the film industry or that existing performers will not be displaced. In a July 23, 2026 CBS News report, van der Velden said Particle6’s team had grown sixfold to roughly 40 workers after the company leaned into AI. The figure is her account, not an independently audited measure or an industry-wide employment result.
Is Tilly Norwood an actor?
The answer depends on what “actor” is meant to describe. Van der Velden treats Tilly as a performer she can place in different fictional settings. Critics see a synthetic character that lacks a human performer’s lived experience. The Los Angeles Times reported that people help develop Tilly’s character and that the team selects and refines generated scene versions. That means an AI-generated performance can still involve human creative direction and selection; it does not settle whether the character itself should be called an actor.

Van der Velden has framed Tilly as art rather than a replacement for a person. In a response reported by the Associated Press, she said: “To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work — a piece of art.”
What do SAG-AFTRA and performers object to?
SAG-AFTRA says “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered.” As quoted by AP, the union objected that Tilly was generated by a computer program trained on professional performers’ work “without permission or compensation.” That is the union’s allegation and framing; the cited reports do not independently establish what training material was used.

The union and performers also raise concerns about synthetic characters taking work from human actors and weakening the value of human performance and connection. The Guardian reported criticism from performers including Emily Blunt and summarized the union’s concerns. These objections are not simply a dispute about whether the technology can produce convincing images: they ask who has a say in using performers’ work, who gets credit or compensation, and whose jobs may be affected.

As of CBS News’s July 23, 2026 report, van der Velden said she would not put Tilly in a live-action film role because those roles should go to human actors. She said Tilly should remain within an AI production: “The point of her is to raise awareness of what is possible, but she needs to stay in her AI box. That’s why we are making an AI film with her.” CBS described the planned feature Misaligned as in production at that time; that report does not establish its later release status.

Van der Velden also told CBS that it took four months and about 2,000 iterations to arrive at Tilly’s final look. Those figures describe her account of this character’s development, not a general measure of the time or labor involved in making AI characters.
