Tilda Swinton’s newly announced book, Material Evidence, is an object-led account of her life rather than a conventional chronological memoir. Canongate announced it on 1 October 2026, confirming hardback, ebook and audio editions—but no firm publication date. The phrase “first book” needs context: Swinton was also associated with the earlier visual book Tilda Swinton – Ongoing.
What is Material Evidence?
Canongate describes Material Evidence as an unconventional account of Swinton’s life, built around objects and the memories and questions they prompt. The publisher’s examples include a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk and a photograph. Rather than moving year by year, the book follows associations from one object into connected experiences and ideas. Canongate’s announcement calls it a memoir, though its object-based approach sets it apart from a straightforward life chronology.
Swinton described the book as “a book about curiosity” and “a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest” in her statement published by Canongate. She said she hoped it would affirm readers’ sense of the changing spirit of a person alongside the enduring material things that make up a life.
What subjects will the book cover?
Canongate says the objects lead into a wide range of subjects, including family history, class and inheritance, Scottish identity, war and its aftermath, grief, collaboration, performance and art. Its examples suggest that the book will move between intimate artifacts and broader personal or historical questions; the announcement does not provide a full contents list or chapter-by-chapter account.

Is this Tilda Swinton’s first book?
“First book” is accurate only with qualification. Canongate presents Material Evidence as Swinton’s first book, but the Eye Filmmuseum’s 2025 announcement described Tilda Swinton – Ongoing as a personal book by Swinton. The museum characterized that earlier project as a visual biography and overview of her work, published by Rizzoli and Hannibal Books. Eye Filmmuseum’s release also places it in the context of an exhibition and film retrospective.

The two projects therefore have different stated purposes and forms. The earlier book is a visual overview of Swinton’s work; the new announcement presents Material Evidence as a memoir organized around objects and the memories they open up.

When will Material Evidence be released, and in what formats?
Canongate’s 1 October 2026 announcement confirms hardback, ebook and audio editions but gives no publication day or season. It also does not include a price, ISBN or preorder listing. A 3 October 2026 secondary report gives fall 2028 as FSG’s expected timing; that is the report’s expectation, not a date stated in Canongate’s announcement, so readers should treat it as unconfirmed until the relevant publisher provides a release date. Publishers Weekly’s report is the source for that timing.

Canongate made the announcement. It names De Arbeiderspers for Dutch rights and Flammarion for French rights, and quotes Farrar, Straus and Giroux editor Mitzi Angel welcoming Swinton to FSG. These details establish involvement by those publishers, not a complete territory-by-territory release schedule. The announcement does not specify when each edition will appear in its market.
