No—TikTok says it does not run a program that pays people simply to watch videos or scroll. The “Screentime To Cash” prompts reported by Mashable were third-party promotions pointing users to separate reward apps, not an official TikTok payout offer. TikTok’s Creator Rewards program is real, but it pays eligible creators for qualifying original videos—not viewers for screen time.
Why the pop-up can look official
The reported message reads, “Congratulations! You have been selected for our Screentime To Cash program,” and is styled to resemble a TikTok notification. That presentation can make a promotion seem like an in-app offer from TikTok, but appearance alone does not establish who placed it or who operates the destination.

Mashable reported that TikTok said it does not pay users to watch videos or scroll. It also reported that third parties ran promotions designed to resemble official messages and direct people to get-paid-to apps. TikTok told Mashable: “We’ve removed content and accounts for violating our policies against deceptive practices and misleading content.” Mashable’s report, published September 29, 2026, is the source for TikTok’s response and the reported promotion mechanics.

The report named Playful Rewards and QuickRewardz among apps users said they reached through the promotions. A Playful Rewards spokesperson said its company did not run the ads directly and that they could have come from a third-party ad source. These services should not be described as TikTok partners on that basis.

How the viewer offer differs from TikTok Creator Rewards
TikTok’s official Creator Rewards documentation describes creator monetization, not payment for passive viewing. The distinction is who earns money and what activity qualifies:

TikTok’s support page describes qualifying original videos as at least one minute long and sets out additional eligibility requirements. Availability and terms depend on region and account eligibility, so consult TikTok’s current Creator Rewards information rather than treating a viewer pop-up as an alternative way to qualify.

What to check before using a linked reward app
The promotion’s unofficial status does not by itself prove that every app it mentions is a scam. Mashable reports that get-paid-to apps may offer rewards for other activities, such as games, surveys, or forms, and recounts user complaints about payouts being denied. Those complaints do not establish what will happen to every user or account, or what an app’s current terms provide.

Check which company runs the destination app; do not infer that TikTok operates or endorses it because the promotion appeared on TikTok.
- Read the current terms and privacy policy. Understand what information the app collects, how it may be shared, and what conditions apply to rewards before signing up or submitting details.
- Be cautious with personal information. Mashable notes that reward apps may share data with third parties. That general risk is not proof that a particular app has misused your data, but it is a reason to check the operator and terms first.
- Do not treat a payout promise as guaranteed. Review the app’s stated eligibility, redemption rules, and conditions for any reward; user reports and a promotional message are not proof that you will be paid.
The Mashable report also references a 2023 FTC and DOJ suit involving lead-generation practices. That case does not establish that any specific app named in the TikTok promotions misused a particular reader’s information.

If you already tapped the prompt
- If you only opened the promotion, close it and avoid entering information until you have identified the app’s operator and reviewed its current privacy terms.
- If you created an account or submitted personal information, review what you provided and the service’s privacy policy for its stated data practices and available account controls.
- If you entered a password you also use elsewhere, change it on the other services and use a unique password going forward.
- Report the misleading content through TikTok’s available reporting options. TikTok’s statement to Mashable says it removed content and accounts for policy violations, but it does not establish that every such promotion has been removed.
