If a specific application opens a dialog that explicitly names thumbnail.dll, treat it as a separate, application-specific problem: record the exact message, executable path, and application version before repairing or reinstalling that program. The steps below start with the least disruptive repair and progress to Windows component servicing.
What “thumbnail.dll is missing or not found” can mean
The filename can describe two different symptoms that should not be conflated.

File Explorer shows icons instead of previews
When image, video, document, or other file previews are blank, stale, or replaced by generic icons, the likely target is Explorer’s per-user thumbnail cache. Windows stores generated previews in cache databases. A damaged or stuck cache can make thumbnails disappear even when the underlying files and Windows components are intact. Clearing those databases makes Explorer create fresh copies.

A program may show text such as “thumbnail.dll was not found” while starting or opening a file. The available Windows repair guidance does not establish one universal Windows component or one application owner for that filename. The correct repair therefore depends on the program named in the dialog, the exact path shown, and the installed version. Do not assume that a preview-cache failure and an application startup error have the same cause.

Identify the symptom before changing anything

Write down the exact wording before dismissing an error. A path such as C:Program FilesVendorAppthumbnail.dll points to the application, while a symptom limited to Explorer points first to the cache.
Fix thumbnail previews by rebuilding Explorer’s cache
Use this procedure when the problem is missing, stale, or incorrect previews in File Explorer. Deleting the cache databases is reversible: Windows regenerates them as folders are viewed.
1. Close File Explorer windows
- Save any work that uses an Explorer window.
- Close every open File Explorer window. Keeping one open can leave cache files in use.
2. Delete the thumbnail cache files
- Press
Windows key + Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
%LocalAppData%MicrosoftWindowsExplorerand press Enter. - In the folder that opens, select files whose names begin with
thumbcache_and end in.db, such asthumbcache_256.db. Select all matchingthumbcache_*.dbfiles. - Press Delete. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that all Explorer windows are closed and try again after restarting Explorer as described below.
Do not delete unrelated files from the folder. The target is the thumbnail databases, not a downloaded DLL or arbitrary system file.

3. Restart Explorer
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details. - On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. The taskbar and open folders may disappear briefly and then return.
- Open the folder that previously showed generic icons. Windows will rebuild thumbnails as it processes the files.
The first display can take longer than subsequent views because previews are being generated again. Test with a folder containing a few known image or video files rather than judging the result while the cache is still rebuilding.
If the cache files will not delete
- Restart Windows, do not open File Explorer, and repeat the Run-dialog path before launching other programs.
- Use Task Manager’s End task on Windows Explorer, delete the cache files, then choose Run new task in Task Manager and enter
explorer.exe. - If a security or backup program keeps a file open, temporarily close that program only if you understand its protection state, then restore it immediately after the test.
Repair Windows components with DISM
Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) when the cache rebuild does not resolve the issue, when several Windows functions are malfunctioning, or when you suspect damaged Windows components. DISM repairs the Windows component store that later repairs rely on.
Run the online repair command
- Open Start and type Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthLeave the window open until the operation reports completion. Progress can pause for a while; do not close the terminal merely because the percentage has not changed immediately. The command uses the running Windows installation and may obtain repair files through Windows Update.

Interpret the result
- A successful completion means the component store repair finished. Continue with System File Checker in the next section.
- An error stating that source files could not be found means DISM lacked usable repair content. Supply a matching source rather than copying a DLL from a download site.
- If DISM reports that the operation cannot run, verify that the terminal is elevated and that the command was typed with the spaces and slashes shown.
Run System File Checker after DISM
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files and can replace damaged copies using the component store repaired by DISM. Running SFC first can leave it dependent on the same damaged source, so use the order below.

- Keep the elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal open, or reopen it with Run as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannowWait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and repeat the exact action that produced the symptom: open the affected folder, generate a preview, or launch the application.
What an SFC result means
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. For an Explorer-only problem, return to cache and Explorer settings; for a single application, investigate that application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and retest. The repair concerns protected Windows files, not necessarily a third-party program’s private DLL.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Preserve the CBS log referenced by Windows and follow Microsoft’s escalation guidance. Repeatedly copying DLLs from the internet is not a substitute for servicing the component store.
Give DISM a matching repair source when online content is unavailable
DISM can obtain files from Windows Update, but that source may be unavailable because of network, policy, or servicing conditions. Microsoft’s guidance requires a repair source that matches the operating-system version. Use Windows installation media or an ISO that matches the installed edition, language, and build as closely as practical.

Check the installed Windows details first
- Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and press Enter to note the Windows version and build. - Open Settings > System > About and note the edition, such as Home or Pro, and the system type.
- Obtain installation media intended for that same Windows release, edition, language, and architecture. A source from a substantially different build can fail or produce an unsuitable repair.
Use the source with DISM
Mount the ISO or connect the matching installation media and identify its drive letter. If the media is mounted as drive D:, first check whether it contains install.wim or install.esd in the sources folder. The image index must correspond to your edition; the index is not universal across media. Because the correct index and file format vary by media, do not guess them. Use the index information exposed by DISM for that specific image, then run the restore command with the matching source and, when necessary, the /LimitAccess option to prevent an attempted Windows Update lookup.
If you are not comfortable identifying the correct image index, stop after recording the DISM error and use Microsoft’s documented servicing procedure or a qualified technician. A mismatched source is less safe than leaving the original component untouched until the correct media is available.
Repair an application that explicitly names thumbnail.dll
When only one application reports the filename, Windows cache deletion may do nothing. The filename could belong to that application, an extension, or a plug-in. Use this evidence-first sequence.
Record the application and path
- Capture the exact error text, including whether it says “missing,” “not found,” or another condition.
- Write down the application name, version, and the full path shown in the dialog or in the application’s shortcut properties.
- Note what action triggers the error: startup, opening a particular file, importing media, or generating a preview.
Use the application’s own repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application. If Advanced options exposes Repair, use Repair first and retest.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use the application vendor’s official installer for the same product and architecture. Prefer an in-place repair or reinstall that preserves your projects and settings when the installer offers that choice.
- Restart Windows and repeat the originating action.
Do not substitute a file downloaded from an unverified DLL repository. A DLL with the right filename can be the wrong version, lack required dependencies, or contain unwanted code. The exact owning application and path are required before an application-specific replacement can be prescribed.
When reinstalling does not help
- Check whether the error appears only with one file type or one plug-in. Disable optional extensions through the application’s own settings and test again.
- Confirm that the application is installed in the path named by the error and that your security software has not quarantined one of its files. Review the security product’s quarantine history rather than downloading a replacement.
- Use the vendor’s support channel with the recorded message, version, path, and Windows build. Those details let the vendor identify the component that owns the filename.
What not to do
- Do not download a standalone thumbnail.dll: there is no established universal Windows DLL for this symptom, and an unverified replacement can be incompatible or unsafe.
- Do not delete random files from Windows folders: the cache procedure targets only
thumbcache_*.dbin your local Explorer cache directory. - Do not keep rerunning SFC without reading its result: an unrepaired-file message calls for the CBS log and proper servicing guidance.
- Do not treat every preview problem as system corruption: a per-user cache issue has a narrower, reversible fix than component-store repair.
- Do not assume a third-party application error is repaired by Windows cache deletion: identify the executable and path first.
Choose the least disruptive fix that matches the evidence

After the repair: a focused retest
- Restart Windows after DISM, SFC, or an application reinstall.
- For an Explorer problem, open a folder containing several files that should produce previews and wait for generation to finish.
- For an application problem, launch the same executable and repeat the same file-opening or import action that originally failed.
- If the symptom returns, record the new exact message and path instead of repeating unrelated repairs.
A cache failure that returns immediately after regeneration may point to a continuing Explorer or file-type problem. An error that remains confined to one application points toward that application’s installation or plug-ins. An SFC result that leaves files unrepaired requires log-based escalation, not a random DLL replacement.
