After three years using an 80% charge limit, MacRumors reporter Juli Clover reported 88% maximum capacity for an iPhone 15 Pro Max after 36 months, 93% for an iPhone 16 Pro Max after 24 months, and 97% for an iPhone 17 Pro Max after 12 months. Those readings show how three individual phones fared; they do not prove the cap caused their battery health or establish how much it extends an iPhone’s lifespan.
What the three-year report found
In a report published on 6 October 2026, Juli Clover shared battery readings from three Pro Max iPhones used with an 80% Charge Limit. The phones were different models and had spent different lengths of time under the cap.

These are device readings reported by Clover, not averages or population statistics. Because the models and observation periods differ, the figures are not a head-to-head durability ranking. [MacRumors, 6 October 2026]
Does an 80% limit extend iPhone battery life?
The series cannot establish that it does. It follows one reporter’s devices rather than comparing matched phones under controlled conditions. Usage, temperature, charging method, hardware variation and cycle count can all differ. Clover also changed charging practices over time, and the older phones accumulated few cycles during the latest year of the series. Their readings are consistent with those particular phones retaining the reported capacity while the limit was enabled, but they do not isolate the limit’s effect.

Earlier comparisons were mixed
At the one-year checkpoint in 2024, Clover reported 94% maximum capacity at 299 cycles for her capped iPhone 15 Pro Max. Two coworkers’ uncapped phones read 87% at 329 cycles and 90% at 271 cycles. The small comparison had differences in use and charging, so it could not show that the cap caused the apparent gap. [MacRumors, 24 September 2024]
In 2025, her capped iPhone 16 Pro Max was at 94% and 299 cycles after a year; an uncapped coworker’s iPhone 16 Pro Max was at 96% and 308 cycles. At that checkpoint, the capped phone did not show a capacity advantage. These are also individual observations, not a controlled test. [MacRumors, 24 September 2025]

Separate context comes from a 2024 9to5Mac report describing Macwelt’s analysis of voluntary Facebook submissions from iPhone 15 users: 102 data points, with a reported t-test p-value of 0.047121; filtering out devices below 140 cycles left 89 points and a p-value of 0.047547. The sample was self-selected and the reporting was second-hand; the account described absolute capacity differences as small. It does not turn the personal series into proof of a causal benefit. What Apple’s 80% Charge Limit actually does
On iPhone 15 models and later, Apple offers a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in five-point increments. With a limit below 100%, the phone generally stops charging near the selected level, but may occasionally charge to 100% to maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates. The setting is a ceiling on the charge available for that session, not a guarantee that the battery will never reach 100%. Apple’s support page says the phone charges to within a few percentage points of the chosen limit before stopping.
Choosing between 80%, 90%, 95% and Optimized Battery Charging

The reporter found the lost fifth of available charge difficult to justify on the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro Max, sometimes running short and carrying a battery pack. On the iPhone 17 Pro Max, its larger battery made the cap less difficult for her to live with. Those are personal experiences, not a prediction for every user. Camera use, GPS and long days can make the extra reserve matter more.

If you want a fixed limit, open Settings > Battery > Charging on a supported iPhone and choose the Charge Limit. To use the adaptive alternative, set the limit to 100% and enable Optimized Battery Charging in the same charging settings. Menu wording can vary by iOS version.

Apple says Optimized Battery Charging is on by default during iPhone setup, but its routine learning takes time. According to Apple Support, it needs at least 14 days and at least nine charges lasting five or more hours in a given location before the feature engages. If your routine or location varies, the phone may not have enough recurring behavior to predict when you will unplug it.

Is the 80% limit worth using?
Use it if the reduced maximum still leaves you enough charge for an ordinary day and you are comfortable adjusting plans or recharging when needed. If the cap regularly leaves you short, raise it to 90% or 95%, or use 100% with Optimized Battery Charging. The available reports do not quantify a guaranteed lifespan extension, so there is no demonstrated battery-health gain here that can be weighed against your own lost runtime.
