A clean score from a resume checker means that one tool’s rules were satisfied for the file it received. It does not mean the file has been tested against an employer’s applicant tracking system (ATS), and three green results can come from three different kinds of check. If one of the tools was never actually installed or accessible, its result is not evidence at all.
The headline describes one writer’s experience. No tool names, versions, devices, or resume files were published with it, so the account cannot be reproduced. Treat it as a useful warning about how these tools disagree, not as a controlled test of any product.

What a “clean” score actually measures
Most resume checkers combine several separate questions into one number. Pulling them apart explains most of the disagreement readers run into.

| Check | Question it answers | Typical problem it flags | What you can inspect yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text extraction | Can software pull selectable text out of the PDF? | Scanned or image-only pages with no text layer | Select all and copy the text |
| Reading order | Does extracted text stay in the order a person reads it? | Two-column or positioned text that comes out scrambled | Check whether a job title sits next to the wrong employer |
| Field recognition | Are sections, dates, job titles, and employers identified? | Dates or titles detached from the entries they belong to | Check that each date stays with its role |
| Document rules | Does the layout follow the checker’s formatting rules? | Tables, text boxes, headers, or icons the rules treat as risky | Compare the layout against the checker’s own explanation |
| Job-description keyword coverage | How many words from one posting appear in the resume? | Missing terms that the posting uses | Compare the posting’s wording with your resume’s wording |
A tool that scores only text extraction can pass a resume that a keyword matcher marks down. A tool that scores keyword coverage tells you nothing about whether the file parses. Three clean results may therefore mean three different things.

Text extraction
This is the most basic check. If software cannot read the characters in your PDF, nothing else in the resume is available to it. Image-only PDFs, often created by scanning a printout or by exporting a flattened design file, are the usual cause.
Reading order
Multi-column layouts and text placed in boxes can extract in an unexpected sequence. The software may read the sidebar before the main body, or read across two columns line by line. The text is present but no longer says what you meant it to say.
Field recognition
Some checkers try to label sections such as Experience and Education, and to match dates and job titles to the correct employer. When this fails, the tool may report that a date is missing even though it appears on the page. That complaint usually means the date was separated from its entry during extraction, not that the date is absent from the file.
Job-description keyword coverage
This check compares your resume with one posting. Its result changes with every posting, so a single score says little about how the resume will fare for other roles. It also measures word overlap, not the quality of your experience.
Why the same resume can get different scores
ResumeATS publishes its methodology, and it is a useful example of how a single product’s score is built. Its estimate is a weighted combination of general checks, including text extraction, structure, content rules, and optional job-description keyword coverage. The maximum total when all checks apply is 129 points. Its published bands are specific to that product:
| ResumeATS band | Score range | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Strong | 85–100 | Strong |
| Good, with fixes | 70–84 | Good, with fixes |
| Needs work | 50–69 | Needs work |
| At risk | 0–49 | At risk |
These bands are ResumeATS’s own scale. A “Strong” from one checker is not comparable to a number from another, and neither number predicts an employer’s result.

The same methodology also admits a limit that matters to any checker: some of its checks are heuristic. A heuristic check may flag a layout that parses acceptably, or miss one that does not. A tool that says your file is fine has told you what its rules found, and nothing more.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to test what a parser actually sees
You do not need special software to check the most important thing. A word processor and a plain-text editor are enough.
-
Export the final version of the resume as a PDF from your word processor. In Microsoft Word, use File > Save As (or Export) and choose PDF. Use the exact file you plan to submit, after its last edit.
-
Open the PDF and check that you can select text. In most PDF viewers, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) and watch whether the highlighting covers the text. If you cannot select anything, the file is probably an image and has no searchable text.
-
Copy the selected text with Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac).

Paste it into a plain-text editor such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. In TextEdit, switch to plain text with Format > Make Plain Text before pasting.

Read the pasted text from top to bottom. Confirm that your name, contact details, section headings, employers, job titles, and dates all appear, and that each date sits with the job it belongs to.
-
If the order is scrambled or a field is missing, simplify the layout and export again. Then repeat the copy-and-paste check. Do not rewrite the content to chase a score until the file itself reads correctly.
This test reveals text-layer and reading-order problems that a checker’s score may hide, and it costs nothing to repeat after each change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Layout choices that create parsing risk
ATS Resume Tools recommends a single-column layout as the conservative default when you cannot test the parser you are targeting, because columns add reading-order risk. This is a precaution, not proof that every two-column resume fails. If a job posting names a required format, follow it first, and then check the extracted text.
Other common risks are worth checking before any score is considered:
- Scanned or image-only PDFs with no selectable text.
- Contact details shown only as icons, such as a phone symbol or envelope, with no written text beside them.
- Dates, employers, or job titles placed in text boxes or table cells that extract out of sequence.
- Section headings that are decorative graphics rather than typed words.
What the Jobscan guidance says and what it does not
Jobscan’s guidance, written by Sydney Myers, identified there as Jobscan’s Senior Content Manager, and dated November 10, 2023, includes this line: “If the Jobscan resume scanner can’t see it, the ATS probably won’t see it either.” The sentence is useful because it treats a scanner’s view as a practical proxy. It is still a vendor’s statement. It does not show that every employer uses the same parser. Jobscan also publishes a troubleshooting article on why its scanner may report missing dates, which is worth reading if a date-field warning is the problem you are trying to solve. Because that guidance is dated, check current product behavior before relying on specific features.

A verification routine for any checker
-
Confirm the checker’s name and that the version you are using is actually installed or reachable. A checker that never ran cannot contribute a result, so record it as untested.

Run the exact file you intend to submit, after the final export.
-
Open the checker’s extracted-text view, if it has one, and read it. Do not rely on the score alone.
-
Compare the results by function rather than by number. Ask which tool checked text extraction, which checked fields, which checked layout rules, and which compared keywords.
-
If a problem persists after re-export, simplify the layout and repeat the copy-and-paste check before running the checkers again.

What no checker can tell you
A generic checker cannot see how a particular employer has configured its hiring system, which questions it asks, or whether a human reviewer reads the resume. A passing result narrows the list of technical problems. It does not promise a callback. No published, independent figure was found that measures how often checkers disagree or how often parsing failures cost candidates interviews, so any percentage you see quoted elsewhere should be checked against its source.
