Yes, a smart camera’s AI alert can be useful—but it is not proof that a person did anything wrong. The Sainsbury’s incident shows why every alert needs human review, why camera owners must make privacy and account-security choices deliberately, and why an internet-connected camera cannot replace locks, lighting or an alarm.
The retail system involved at Sainsbury’s East Dulwich store and a camera in a private home are different technologies operating in different settings. The incident does not establish that consumer cameras make the same mistakes or create the same harms. It does provide a practical test for your own setup: treat recognition as a prompt to check, limit who and what the camera records, and maintain the device like any other security equipment.

What happened at Sainsbury’s?
The Guardian reported that Matt Arnold was challenged by managers at Sainsbury’s East Dulwich after a Facewatch alert and was asked to leave. Sainsbury’s apologized the next day and paused use of the system at that store while it investigated. Sainsbury’s said the incident resulted from human error, while Facewatch said a correct alert was mishandled in the store. Those are the companies’ explanations, not an independently established finding.

Arnold described the encounter to the Guardian: “There was no pause for thought from the staff, no suggestion that they understood this is not how a shoplifter would behave. Just blindly following the machine’s orders.” His account captures the central risk for home users: an automated label can acquire more authority than the evidence deserves.

Sainsbury’s separately describes Facewatch as a store-safety measure and says trained staff review alerts before action. Those safeguards are the retailer’s account; they do not prove that the system is incapable of error. The event also says nothing by itself about the accuracy of a particular home-camera model.
Lesson one: an AI recognition alert is a lead, not a verdict
Facial recognition and other “person,” “familiar face” or “suspicious activity” features turn pixels into a probability or a category. They do not observe intent, establish identity beyond doubt, or explain what happened before and after the notification. Lighting, camera angle, a partially covered face, motion blur and low image quality can all affect what the software sees. No independently validated false-positive rate for consumer home-camera face recognition has been established for this incident.
Use a review-before-action routine
- Read the alert as a prompt. Note the time, camera name and detection type. Do not confront a visitor, contact a neighbour or call emergency services solely because an app supplied a label.
- Open the clip and the surrounding timeline. Review several seconds before and after the event. Check whether a delivery, family member, reflection, animal or passing pedestrian explains the trigger.
- Check the image conditions. Look for glare, darkness, rain, a hood or mask, a camera that has shifted, and objects that block part of the frame. A person-shaped outline is not the same as a confirmed identity.
- Seek a second signal. Door and window sensors, a live view, an alarm status, a known delivery time or a call to someone at home can add context. If the situation appears dangerous, use the appropriate emergency service rather than approaching the person yourself.
- Record and correct. Save only what you need for a genuine incident, mark a false alert in the app if that option exists, and adjust the detection zone or sensitivity. Repeated false alerts are a configuration problem to fix, not evidence that the next alert is reliable.
Keep human judgement in the loop even when an app uses confident language such as “recognized” or “known person.” A recognition list can be stale, a face can be shared by relatives, and a camera may see only a fraction of someone’s features. The safest household rule is that software can bring an event to your attention; a person decides what, if anything, it means.

When the camera identifies someone you do not expect
First verify that the clip belongs to your property and that the timestamp is correct. Check whether another household member shared access or whether a neighbour’s movement crosses the camera’s field of view. If the image still suggests an immediate threat, stay inside, secure doors and windows, and contact local authorities. Do not publish a face or accuse someone online based on an automated match. If the alert is wrong, delete unnecessary copies and report the error through the maker’s support channel.

Lesson two: decide privacy and account protections before you install
A camera is both a security sensor and a recording device. Before buying or mounting one, establish what it sees, where footage goes, how long it remains available and who can retrieve it. A camera aimed at your own entrance creates a different privacy risk from one that continuously records a neighbour’s garden, a shared hallway or a public pavement.
Map the camera’s data path
- Storage location: Determine whether clips are stored on the camera, a local recorder, a memory card, a vendor cloud service or a combination.
- Retention: Find the automatic deletion period and whether motion clips, thumbnails and continuous recordings have different lifetimes. A longer history increases the impact of a stolen account.
- Processing: Check which features require cloud processing. Person or face analysis may send images away from the premises even when ordinary live viewing works locally.
- Access: List every account, shared user, phone and web session that can view or export video. Remove former household members and unused integrations.
- Audio and visibility: Disable microphones or privacy zones when they are not needed, and angle the lens so it does not unnecessarily capture neighbours or public space.
Read the privacy and support information before committing to a camera. A cheaper device with unclear retention or a short support life can create more exposure than a better-documented alternative.
Harden the account and network
- Replace the factory password immediately. Use a unique, long password that you do not reuse for email or other smart devices.
- Turn on two-step verification (2SV) if the device or app offers it. The National Cyber Security Centre’s consumer guidance states: “If the device or app offers 2-step verification (2SV), turn it on.”
- Enable login alerts, passkeys or an authenticator method when available, and review active sessions after changing credentials.
- Put the camera on a separate guest or Internet-of-Things network if your router supports network separation. This limits the damage if the camera account or firmware is compromised.
- Disable remote access when you never view the camera away from home. A feature that is off cannot be exploited through an account you are not monitoring.
Sharing access deserves the same care as choosing a password. Give a sitter or relative the least privilege they need, set an end date where the app allows it, and avoid passing around a single household login.
Lesson three: keep the fundamentals working
AI cannot compensate for a dead battery, a failed Wi-Fi link, outdated software or a camera pointed at the wrong place. A dependable setup combines the connected device with ordinary physical security.

Maintain the device
- Power: Test battery cameras on a schedule and before holidays. Check that solar panels are clean and that wired plugs and adapters cannot be easily unplugged.
- Connectivity: Confirm that the camera reconnects after a router restart. Review outage notifications and consider whether a local recording option is needed during an Internet failure.
- Firmware: Turn on automatic updates when offered. If updates are manual, install them promptly and verify that the version actually changed.
- Notifications: Remove noisy event types, set useful schedules and test that critical alerts reach your phone. A stream of false alarms trains people to ignore the real one.
- Physical condition: Clean the lens, check the mount and confirm that the field of view still covers the intended entry after weather, vibration or a house move.
Use layers instead of a single camera
Fit reliable door and window locks, suitable exterior lighting and an alarm where appropriate. A camera can show what happened, but a locked door delays entry and an alarm can draw attention even when the camera is offline. Place cameras where they support those measures rather than assuming a recording will prevent an intrusion.
What to check before buying a smart camera
The National Cyber Security Centre advises checking the maker’s support period before purchase and avoiding products that are already unsupported or close to the end of support. Treat the following as a minimum due-diligence list:
| Question | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| How long will security updates be provided? | An unsupported camera may retain an exposed vulnerability while remaining connected to your home. | The published minimum support period and its starting date. |
| What account protections exist? | A strong password and 2SV reduce the chance that someone else can view or export footage. | 2SV availability, login alerts and the process for removing users. |
| Where is video stored and for how long? | Cloud retention and local storage create different privacy, outage and deletion risks. | Storage location, retention defaults and deletion controls. |
| Can remote access be disabled? | Turning off an unneeded pathway reduces exposure. | The exact app or web setting and whether local viewing still works. |
| What happens without Internet or power? | A camera that becomes blind during an outage may leave a false sense of security. | Battery duration, local recording and reconnection behaviour. |
| Which detection features are actually useful? | Extra labels can create more alerts and more sensitive data collection. | Person, vehicle, animal or face features, plus their processing requirements. |
Setup sequence for a safer installation
- Plan the view. Draw the intended coverage and mask windows, neighbouring property and public areas that do not need recording.
- Confirm support. Save the manufacturer’s support-period statement and contact route for security issues.
- Create the account securely. Use a unique password, enable 2SV and decline unnecessary social or third-party integrations.
- Update before mounting. Install available firmware, then change settings for retention, privacy zones, audio and remote access.
- Test ordinary and failure cases. Trigger a harmless motion event, disconnect Wi-Fi briefly, restart the router and check battery or power alerts.
- Document access. Keep a private list of authorised users, camera locations, storage settings and the date of the last review.
- Recheck periodically. Review users, firmware, notifications, camera angle and retention at least when clocks change or household members change.
UK rules that affect connected-device buyers
For readers in the UK, consumer smart-device security requirements took effect on 29 April 2024. Government guidance describes restrictions on weak default passwords, a requirement for manufacturers to publish contact details for reporting security issues, and disclosure of minimum security-update periods. The government announcement states: “Manufacturers will have to publish contact details so bugs and issues can be reported and dealt with.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These requirements are jurisdiction-specific. They do not mean every camera sold elsewhere has the same protections, and they do not remove the need to change passwords, enable 2SV or check privacy settings. A product can meet a legal baseline while still being a poor fit for your preferred storage, retention or remote-access model.

Common failure modes and the right response
| Symptom | Likely issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Many alerts for shadows, trees or passers-by | Detection zone, sensitivity, angle or lighting is unsuitable. | Reposition the camera, mask irrelevant areas, adjust sensitivity and improve lighting; then test again. |
| No alert during a known movement | Power, Wi-Fi, notification permissions or schedules failed. | Check the device status, phone permissions, battery and router connection; review the event timeline. |
| Unexpected login or shared viewing | Password reuse, an old user or an exposed session. | Change the password, revoke sessions, remove unknown users, enable 2SV and inspect connected services. |
| Camera stops receiving updates | Support has ended, automatic updates are off or the device cannot reach its service. | Check the published support period, install the latest update if available and replace an unsupported device. |
| Camera may be compromised | Unrecognised settings, accounts, traffic or persistent malfunction. | Follow the manufacturer’s compromise and reset instructions, preserve necessary evidence and change related passwords. |
When selling or giving away a camera, remove it from your account and perform the manufacturer’s factory reset. A reset is part of responsible disposal because stored credentials, clips or ownership links may otherwise remain accessible.
How to judge whether an alert deserves action
Use three questions: What exactly did the camera observe? What independent evidence supports it? What is the least intrusive safe response? If the answer to the first question is only a low-quality snapshot, do not treat a confident label as certainty. If the second is absent, observe remotely and improve the setup rather than escalating. If there is a credible immediate danger, prioritise personal safety and contact the appropriate authorities.
The Sainsbury’s episode is therefore a lesson in process, not a verdict on every AI camera. Automation can shorten the time between an event and your awareness of it. It should not remove the pause in which a person checks the footage, considers privacy and chooses a proportionate response.
