Those dates explain when the Touch Bar arrived, which major generations used it, and when Apple ended it in the larger flagship MacBook Pro models.
The three dates that define the MacBook Pro Touch Bar
Apple’s Touch Bar was a narrow Retina-quality Multi-Touch display built into the keyboard area. It replaced the traditional function-key row and changed its controls according to the app in use. The timeline has three especially useful milestones for anyone identifying a MacBook Pro by year or shopping for a used one.

October 27, 2016: the Touch Bar debuts
What Apple introduced
On October 27, 2016, Apple announced a redesigned MacBook Pro that replaced the conventional function-key row with a “brilliant, Retina-quality Multi-Touch display” called the Touch Bar. The bar could present app-specific controls, while Touch ID was integrated into the power-button area on equipped configurations.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar started at $1,799 at launch. Apple said the model was scheduled to ship in two to three weeks. That is a launch price and delivery estimate from 2016, not a current used-market value.

How to identify this generation
- It is an Intel-era MacBook Pro generation.
- The keyboard area has a Touch Bar instead of a full row of physical function keys.
- The screen size alone is not enough to identify the exact configuration, because 13-inch MacBook Pro models existed in multiple configurations.
November 13, 2019: the 16-inch Touch Bar generation
What changed
Apple introduced the 16-inch MacBook Pro on November 13, 2019. Its launch specification included a Touch Bar, Touch ID, a Force Touch trackpad and Apple’s T2 Security Chip. Apple also described a redesigned scissor-mechanism Magic Keyboard with 1 mm of key travel.
Why this date matters when comparing listings
A listing described as a “16-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar” points to this Intel generation rather than the redesigned 16-inch Apple silicon model announced in 2021. Check the processor description, because screen size and the words “MacBook Pro” do not establish whether a machine is Intel-based or uses Apple silicon.

October 18, 2021: physical function keys return
The redesign that removed the Touch Bar
On October 18, 2021, Apple announced redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Apple stated that physical function keys replaced the Touch Bar, including a wider physical Escape key.
What “discontinued” means here
October 18, 2021 is the key end-of-era date for the Touch Bar in Apple’s larger flagship MacBook Pro models. It should not be presented as proof that every MacBook Pro configuration stopped using a Touch Bar on that exact day. The announcement specifically covers the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models; a listing for another screen size must be checked separately.

Which MacBook Pro models have a Touch Bar?
The documented Touch Bar generations in this timeline are the redesigned 2016 MacBook Pro family and the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 2021 redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models do not have one. Use the physical keyboard as a quick visual check, then confirm the model year, screen size and processor in the listing or in macOS.
| If a listing says… | What to verify |
|---|---|
| “MacBook Pro with Touch Bar” | Model year, 13-inch or 16-inch screen, Intel processor, keyboard layout and battery condition. |
| “16-inch MacBook Pro” | Whether it is the 2019 Intel Touch Bar generation or the 2021 Apple silicon model with physical function keys. |
| “MacBook Pro 2021” | Screen size and chip: the 14-inch and 16-inch M1 Pro/M1 Max models have physical function keys. |
How to check a used or refurbished Touch Bar MacBook Pro
- Confirm the exact year and screen size. Do not rely on a generic product title or a stock photograph.
- Verify the processor. The 2016 and 2019 Touch Bar examples documented here are Intel generations; the 2021 14-inch and 16-inch redesign uses M1 Pro or M1 Max and physical keys.
- Inspect the keyboard photograph. A Touch Bar is visible as a narrow display above the number row; a physical Escape key and a complete function-key row indicate the 2021 redesign.
- Check battery condition and keyboard layout. Ask for the battery-cycle count or maximum capacity when the seller provides it, and confirm whether the layout matches your region.
- Confirm ports and accessory compatibility. USB-C and Thunderbolt accessories can fit across generations, but compatibility and the number of ports vary by model.
- Request the serial number or model identifier. Use it to reconcile the seller’s year, screen size and chip claims before paying.
What to search for today
The exact phrase “MacBook Pro with Touch Bar” is useful when searching marketplace listings, but it is not a complete specification. Add the model year and screen size, and compare the processor, keyboard layout and battery condition. Current inventory, prices, seller quality and any promotional terms change frequently, so treat a listing’s present price as separate from Apple’s $1,799 2016 launch price.

Bottom line for buyers
Choose the 2016 or 2019 timeline when you specifically want a Touch Bar, and verify every listing’s year, screen size and Intel processor. Choose a 2021 14-inch or 16-inch model only if you prefer Apple silicon performance and physical function keys; those redesigned flagships do not include the Touch Bar.
