Start with these three changes: review Brave Shields’ global defaults, leave fingerprinting protection enabled, and—if you use Android—choose an appropriate site-data cleanup policy. They improve privacy without blindly switching every control to its strictest mode. The exact labels and availability vary between desktop, Android and iOS, and a setting that helps one site can break another.
What these three Brave settings actually do
Brave already enables substantial protection in its normal configuration. Shields can block many ads and trackers, restrict third-party cookies, reduce fingerprinting signals and attempt to upgrade navigations to HTTPS. Brave describes its defaults as providing “solid protection without making it harder to browse the Web.” That is a product description, not an independent test, but it captures an important point: the best setup is usually a carefully reviewed default rather than maximum blocking everywhere.

The recommendations below are intentionally different in scope. The first is a global review, the second is a privacy control that is normally on already, and the third is an optional Android data-retention choice. If you use only desktop Brave, the Android option does not apply; a desktop reader can instead verify HTTPS upgrading and per-site Shields controls.
| Setting | Privacy benefit | Compatibility or convenience cost | Scope and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review global Shields defaults | Maintains ad, tracker, cookie, fingerprinting and HTTPS protections at the browser level | Stricter blocking can disrupt scripts, logins or embedded content | Global and per-site; desktop, Android and iOS labels differ |
| Fingerprinting protection | Makes it harder for sites to recognize a browser or device from technical characteristics | Some maps, games and audio/video tools may behave incorrectly | Enabled by default in Brave’s Shields guide; adjustable in Shields settings |
| Site-data cleanup | Removes selected cookies and storage after a site closes or the app exits | Signs you out and removes saved site state | Documented controls are Android-specific; global or per-site choices |
1. Review global Shields defaults instead of turning everything to maximum
Shields is Brave’s main privacy-control panel. Its normal protections address the tracking methods most people encounter: advertising and tracking requests, third-party cookies, fingerprinting techniques and insecure HTTP navigation where an HTTPS version is available. The defaults are configurable globally, and individual sites can have their own exceptions.

How to check the defaults
- Open Brave Settings.
- Open the Shields section or the page that controls global Shields defaults. On some versions, the fastest route is typing “Shields” into the Settings search field.
- Read each control’s current value before changing it. Names and grouping can move between releases and operating systems.
- Keep the ordinary blocking mode unless you have a specific reason to use a stricter option. Save changes, then test the sites you rely on.
- For a single troublesome or trusted site, use the Shields icon in the address bar and change that site’s setting rather than weakening the global policy.
This approach gives you a useful fallback. A shopping checkout, work portal or streaming service may require a script, cookie or embedded frame that an aggressive global policy blocks. A per-site exception limits the compatibility trade-off to that domain.
Why “block everything” is a poor universal rule
- JavaScript: Brave warns that many sites need JavaScript. Blocking it globally can remove menus, forms, media players and account functions.
- Cookies: Blocking all cookies can break authentication and preferences. Third-party-cookie blocking is less disruptive because first-party cookies needed by many logins can remain available.
- Fingerprinting: A stricter anti-fingerprinting mode can alter browser features that legitimate applications use for maps, games or editing audio and video.
- HTTPS upgrading: Brave attempts an HTTPS navigation and can fall back to HTTP when a site does not support HTTPS. That is safer when HTTPS exists, but it is not a guarantee that every connection is encrypted.
Use the Shields panel as a diagnostic tool. If a page is missing content, open the panel, note which category is blocking requests, and make the narrowest per-site adjustment that restores the function. Re-enable the protection after testing if the site works without the exception.
2. Keep fingerprinting protection enabled
Browser fingerprinting identifies a device by combining details such as screen characteristics, fonts, graphics capabilities and other feature responses. Unlike a cookie, a fingerprint can be assembled when a person has not accepted storage. Brave’s protection changes or limits the information exposed so that recognition across sites becomes harder.

Brave’s Shields guide says fingerprinting protection is enabled by default. That means many users do not need to “turn on” a hidden switch; they need to verify that an extension, custom profile or previous troubleshooting change has not disabled it.
How to verify it
- Open a page’s Shields panel from the address bar, or open Brave Settings and search for fingerprinting or Shields.
- Confirm that the fingerprinting control is enabled at the global level.
- Check any site-specific exception. A site can have a different Shields policy from the global default.
- Visit your essential sites again. If a legitimate feature fails, adjust only that site’s setting and record the exception so you can review it later.
Protection against fingerprinting is not anonymity. A site can still see information you deliberately provide, observe your account activity, use ordinary network data, or correlate behavior through methods unaffected by this control. A virtual private network is not required to enable the setting, and this article does not treat one as a prerequisite.
When a site stops working
Rare failures are most likely with applications that depend on unusual graphics, audio or video capabilities, interactive maps, games or browser feature detection. First reload the page. If the problem remains, open the Shields panel and create a per-site exception for fingerprinting protection. Use the smallest change possible; do not switch off all Shields categories at once, because that removes your ability to identify the actual cause.

3. Choose an Android site-data cleanup policy
Stored site data includes cookies, local storage and other information that lets a site remember an account, cart or preference. On Android, Brave documents two related choices: a global or per-site “Forget me when I close this site” control, and an option to clear browsing data when the app fully closes. These are privacy tools, not universal recommendations.

Set “Forget me when I close this site” for selected sites
- In Brave for Android, open Menu → Settings → Brave Shields & Privacy.
- Find the site-data or forget-data control and enable Forget me when I close this site globally, or configure it for individual sites where the option is offered.
- Close the site, then reopen it and confirm what was removed. Expect to sign in again if its login cookie was cleared.
- Leave the control off for services where persistent sessions, drafts or saved preferences are essential, or create a per-site exception if supported by your version.
Use this mode for shared devices, sensitive one-off research or sites whose data you do not want retained. It is less suitable for a primary email account, a work system that requires persistent authentication, or a web app that stores unsent work locally.
Clear data when the Android app fully closes
Brave also documents clearing browsing data when the app fully closes. “Fully closes” matters: minimizing the app or switching to another application does not necessarily trigger the cleanup. Configure the exit-clearing option from Menu → Settings → Brave Shields & Privacy, select the data categories you want removed, and then test by leaving Brave through the system app switcher and launching it again.

Clearing more categories increases privacy but also increases friction. Cookies can sign you out; cached files may make the first reload slower; site storage can erase offline content and preferences. Select only the categories that match your threat model instead of treating deletion as automatically better.
Platform limits
The documented paths above are for Android. Do not assume that iOS or desktop Brave exposes the same wording or behavior. On another platform, open Settings and use its search function, then read the description of the control before enabling it. If the option is absent, use that platform’s available per-site Shields and browsing-data controls rather than relying on an Android instruction.
Settings you should not switch on as blanket fixes
Do Not Track
Do Not Track sends a preference request. Brave notes that most sites do not change their behavior in response, so enabling it does not stop tracking or replace Shields. Treat it as an optional signal, not an enforcement mechanism.

Disabling Safe Browsing
Safe Browsing is enabled by default and is intended to warn about phishing and malware. Brave documents different implementations across operating systems, including OS-backed services on mobile, and notes that Android uses a smaller phishing-site list than desktop. Brave labels disabling the feature as not recommended. Keep it enabled unless you have a specific, informed reason to change it and understand the protection you are giving up.
Global JavaScript or all-cookie blocking
These settings can be useful for troubleshooting or a tightly controlled profile, but they are not sensible “every user” switches. Start with ordinary Shields defaults and handle exceptional sites individually.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify your platform—desktop, Android or iOS—and check the current Brave version.
- Review global Shields defaults and keep core protections enabled.
- Verify fingerprinting protection has not been disabled globally or for important sites.
- On Android, decide whether automatic site-data deletion is worth repeated logins and lost preferences.
- Keep Safe Browsing enabled and do not confuse Do Not Track with blocking.
- When a page breaks, change one per-site control at a time, test, and document the exception.
- Recheck settings after a major browser update because labels and menu locations can change.
What to expect after making the changes
You should see fewer advertising and tracking requests, less persistent site data when you choose cleanup, and more resistance to browser-recognition techniques. You should not expect complete anonymity, universal HTTPS, or every website to behave identically. Privacy controls work best when paired with sensible account practices: use unique passwords, sign out of shared devices, keep Brave updated and avoid granting unnecessary site permissions.
The three recommendations are therefore a decision framework rather than a promise that one configuration fits everyone. Keep the broad protections that do not interfere with normal browsing, retain fingerprinting protection, and use Android cleanup only where its loss of persistence is acceptable.
