The documented “Thoughts on Lanterns” meme is a 2026 joke built around a promotional image for the Lanterns television series. It spread when users drew clothes onto the image and adapted its caption to other franchises. But the “iconic 20-year-old meme” in this article’s original framing remains unidentified: the available reporting does not establish which older meme it means or how it connects to Lanterns.
What is the “Thoughts on Lanterns” meme?
It is an exploitable meme format based on an image of John Stewart and Hal Jordan walking down a street. The original post asks, “Thoughts on Lanterns 2026?” Later versions keep or alter the promotional image, draw clothes onto the characters, and swap in references to other franchises. Know Your Meme describes the format as spreading to examples involving Cuphead, SpongeBob and Patrick, and Breaking Bad characters.
In other words, the joke is not one fixed punchline. The image and caption provide a template: replace the show or franchise reference, then use the edited characters to make the new version recognizable to that fandom.
What is the reported timeline?
Know Your Meme traces the format’s first relevant post to September 4, 2026, and its viral edited version to September 8. These dates and engagement figures are reported by the site; they are not independently verified platform statistics.

The like and repost counts are time-bound snapshots reported by Know Your Meme, not stable totals or audited measures of reach. The edited version’s reported figures help explain why that post became the format’s breakout example, but they do not identify the meme’s relationship to any older DC joke.
Does it connect to an iconic meme from 20 years ago?
That connection is unresolved. The supplied title implies an older DC meme, but the cited coverage does not identify it or provide evidence that it is 20 years old. The documented 2026 “Thoughts on Lanterns” format should not be treated as proof of what the older reference was.

A separate March 2026 ComicBook.com report covered showrunner Damon Lindelof revisiting a joke about dropping “Green” from the title. Lindelof called it “a dumb joke on a comedy podcast” and recalled wearing a Hal Jordan T-shirt at his first Comic-Con panel for the Lost pilot in 2004. Another ComicBook.com explainer reproduces the joke and Grant Morrison’s response. Those reports concern a title controversy and an anecdote; neither identifies the older meme in the headline. The 2004 T-shirt story, in particular, should not be mistaken for evidence of that meme.

The meme’s subject is the Lanterns promotional image and the way it can be remixed, not a documented explanation of the show’s plot or a confirmed adaptation of a particular comic. The available meme entry establishes a visual template and its reported spread; it does not explain the older allusion implied by the headline.
