What Thornblade is in Aniimo
The Official Aniimo Wiki identifies Basic Thornblade as No. 034, a Grass-type DPS with 509 total attributes and 121 ATK. Those figures are in-game data values from the wiki’s undated index entry, accessed in 2026, rather than results from an external combat study.

Thornblade is not a simple “press the strongest skill on cooldown” attacker. Its defining trait rewards a deliberate two-part loop: skills prepare the character, and basic attacks cash in that preparation. If you use basic attacks without building stacks, you are giving up the mechanic that makes Thornblade’s sustained damage distinctive.

The Basic and Prismana entries are separate records, so the No. 034 and No. 035 numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. The official entries also show that “Thornblade’s type” has to be answered with a form attached. Calling every version only Grass hides the secondary Water or Electric typing on the relevant forms.

How Sword Dance works
The official Sword Dance trait states: “Each skill used grants 1 stack of [Sword Dance], up to 4 stacks, lasting 15s. Each basic attack costs 1 stack of [Sword Dance] to deal 180% extra damage.” In practical terms, every skill gives you one charge, four charges is the cap, and each empowered basic attack consumes one charge.
What the numbers mean in play
- One skill equals one stack. Repeatedly casting skills is how you prepare Thornblade’s enhanced attacks.
- Four stacks is the maximum. Additional skills cannot raise Sword Dance above four at a time.
- Stacks last 15 seconds. The timer creates a window in which you must convert preparation into basic attacks.
- One basic attack spends one stack. A full four-stack sequence can therefore empower four basic attacks, assuming you attack before the stacks expire.
- Each empowered basic attack receives 180% extra damage. The wording describes bonus damage, not a replacement for the attack’s normal damage, so the exact final hit depends on how Aniimo calculates bonuses in the current build.
The key decision is timing. Building four stacks and then waiting through most of the 15-second window wastes the trait. Conversely, firing every basic attack immediately after one skill may produce damage now but leaves you with fewer opportunities to align Thornblade’s burst with a vulnerable target. In ordinary encounters, build stacks with skills, begin consuming them with basics, and rebuild as the window closes.
Thorny Defense: mitigation, countering, and critical chance
Basic Thornblade’s Thorny Defense stance reduces damage taken by 20% and counters when Thornblade is attacked. The Basic entry also says that Thornblade gains a 30% critical-rate increase for 15 seconds if it is attacked just as the skill is used. This makes the button both defensive and timing-sensitive: it is strongest when an enemy is about to connect, not when used randomly in an empty space.

The Prismana record lists the critical-rate effect as lasting 10 seconds, while the Basic record gives 15 seconds. Treat those as form-specific documentation rather than assuming one duration applies to every Thornblade. If you are using Prismana, plan around the 10-second figure shown in that record; for Basic Thornblade, the listed duration is 15 seconds. If a future game update changes the tooltip, the current in-game description should take priority over older guide text.
How to time the stance
- Watch the enemy’s attack cue. Save Thorny Defense for a hit you can reasonably predict, such as a telegraphed strike or a boss pattern.
- Activate immediately before contact. The Basic description requires Thornblade to be attacked just as the skill is used for the critical-rate trigger.
- Use the counter window to continue your damage plan. After the defensive exchange, spend Sword Dance stacks with basic attacks while the critical-rate effect is active.
- Do not treat the stance as permanent protection. The 20% reduction helps you survive a committed exchange, but it does not remove the need for healing, positioning, or incoming-damage awareness.
Choosing a Thornblade form
Basic Thornblade: the reference DPS
Basic Thornblade is the form explicitly classified as Grass and DPS by the Official Aniimo Wiki. Its 509 total attributes and 121 ATK are the clearest published baseline, and its Thorny Defense record specifies a 15-second critical-rate effect when the timing condition is met. Choose this form when you want the straightforward Grass damage-dealer identity described by the official index.
Prismana: Grass/Water
Prismana adds Water to Grass and appears as No. 035 rather than the Basic form’s No. 034 record. Its published entry gives 499 total attributes and 121 ATK. The Prismana documentation lists a 10-second critical-rate duration for the Thorny Defense trigger, so its burst-planning window is shorter than the Basic record’s stated window. The secondary Water typing can change which matchups are attractive, but the available material does not establish a universal ranking between forms.

Thunderstorm: Grass/Electric
Thunderstorm is listed as Grass/Electric. The official entry places its habitat in Sea of Flowers, but it does not provide the same total-attribute and ATK figures quoted for Basic and Prismana in the available index information. Select it when the Electric secondary typing better fits the encounter or your roster, and verify its current move details in-game.
Towerwood: Grass
Towerwood is listed as Grass, like Basic, but it is a separate form record and is associated with Rosetower Woods in the official habitat listing. Do not infer that it has identical stats, durations, or encounter rules merely because the primary typing matches Basic.
A practical Thornblade rotation
The following sequence turns the official trait text into a repeatable combat routine. It is a play pattern, not a claim that every fight should use exactly the same button order.
- Pick the form for the matchup. Start with the form’s full typing, including Prismana’s Water or Thunderstorm’s Electric secondary type. Do not plan around “Grass” alone when the form supplies another element.
- Open with skills. Each skill grants one Sword Dance stack. Use enough skills to establish the number of empowered basics you need, up to the four-stack cap.
- Convert stacks with basic attacks. Once the target is exposed, use basic attacks to spend the stacks. Every one consumes a stack and receives the stated 180% extra damage.
- Fit Thorny Defense into a predictable hit. If an enemy attack is telegraphed, activate the stance just before impact so the 20% damage reduction and counter can matter. The attack-timing condition is also what enables the critical-rate effect.
- Keep the timer visible. Sword Dance stacks last 15 seconds. Avoid holding a full stack set until the last moment; start consuming them while there is still time to finish the sequence.
- Rebuild after the spend. Return to skills to generate more stacks, then repeat the skill-to-basic cycle. If the target is about to become invulnerable, delay only when doing so will not cause the current stacks to expire.
When not to force the rotation
Do not spend all four stacks into a target that is about to leave the arena, become invulnerable, or gain a damage-reflecting state. It can be better to use one or two empowered basics and preserve the rest for the next reliable damage window than to lose every stack during a mechanic. Likewise, do not activate Thorny Defense solely to chase its critical-rate bonus if no enemy attack is going to connect; without the timing condition, you may receive the defensive stance but miss the extra offensive payoff described in the entry.
Thornblade’s job in a team
Keep Thornblade in the damage-dealer slot. That recommendation follows its official Basic classification as DPS and its stack-to-basic damage design. The other positions should make it easier to attack safely, finish stagger or Break checks, and recover from damage while Thornblade cycles through skills and empowered basics.

- Support: A support character can help Thornblade reach its damage windows, protect the setup period, or improve the team’s ability to stay active while Sword Dance stacks are built.
- Break: A Break specialist can create longer openings for the empowered basic attacks and reduce the chance that Thornblade’s 15-second stack window expires unused.
- Sustain or regeneration: A regeneration or other sustain slot gives Thornblade more attempts to complete its rotation, especially in encounters where Thorny Defense cannot prevent every hit.
Think of these as coverage requirements rather than mandatory species. The sources do not establish a single mathematically optimal team, and there is no cited experimental test proving that one lineup wins every matchup.

AniimoVerse specifically names Melloblum as an ideal partner and recommends using Ferocious Fang as a held item for Thornblade. That advice comes from a community guide, so treat it as a current build recommendation rather than an official guarantee or independently tested result. If the item or partner does not fit your encounter, preserve the role logic: support Thornblade’s setup and keep enough defensive or recovery coverage to complete the rotation.

When you are deciding whether to replace one member of the example lineup, compare the team on three practical dimensions.
1. Role coverage
Ask whether the replacement still leaves Thornblade with support plus either Break or sustain. Removing both Break and sustain can make the damage pattern look strong on paper but unreliable in real fights, because the team may not create or survive the windows needed to spend Sword Dance stacks.
2. Form and elemental matchup
Compare the full form typing rather than Thornblade’s name alone. Basic and Towerwood are Grass; Prismana is Grass/Water; Thunderstorm is Grass/Electric. A teammate that complements the encounter’s elemental demands may be more valuable than a nominally stronger general-purpose pick.

3. Execution burden
Thornblade’s ceiling depends on converting stacks before they expire and timing Thorny Defense into an incoming attack. If your support or Break option requires several additional precision inputs, a simpler teammate may produce more reliable results for your play style. The sources provide role recommendations, not a measured execution-versus-damage comparison, so this is a decision for your own encounters.
Where to catch Thornblade
There is no single location that can safely be stated for every Thornblade form. The official Basic and Thunderstorm entries list Sea of Flowers. The official Towerwood entry lists Rosetower Woods. Those form-specific records already show why a universal habitat answer can mislead.
Community databases add another disagreement: AniimoVerse lists Breezy Plains, while AniimoGuide says Sea of Flowers. Because these sources do not agree, check the current in-game Aniilog for the exact form you are pursuing before traveling. If you are looking for Basic or Thunderstorm, Sea of Flowers is the location shown in their official entries; if you are looking for Towerwood, Rosetower Woods is the official location listed for that form.
Habitat checklist
- Confirm the form name before using a location guide.
- Check whether the entry refers to Basic, Prismana, Thunderstorm, or Towerwood rather than Thornblade generically.
- Use the current Aniilog when a community database and an official form entry conflict.
- Do not assume that a habitat listed for one form proves the same habitat for every form.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using only basic attacks
Symptom: Thornblade feels like an ordinary Grass attacker and damage falls below expectations.
Fix: Use skills first so Sword Dance stacks are available. The trait’s 180% extra damage applies to basic attacks that consume stacks, not to unprepared attacks.

Letting stacks expire
Symptom: You reach four stacks but lose them before finishing the damage sequence.
Fix: Start spending stacks earlier and watch the 15-second duration. Build only as many stacks as the next safe damage window can consume when the target is unavailable.
Activating Thorny Defense too early
Symptom: You receive the stance but do not get the critical-rate trigger.
Fix: The documented trigger requires Thornblade to be attacked just as the skill is used. Save it for a predictable hit rather than pressing it at the start of every encounter.

Symptom: A matchup plan or critical-rate window behaves differently from the guide you followed.
Fix: Recheck the form’s entry. Prismana is Grass/Water and lists a 10-second critical-rate duration; Basic is Grass and lists 15 seconds. Thunderstorm and Towerwood have their own form records.
Treating the sample squad as mandatory
Symptom: You force Thornblade, Melloblum, Shrubclaw, and Coraliz into a fight where the elemental or mechanical requirements differ.
Fix: Preserve the role pattern, then substitute around the encounter: Thornblade as DPS, one support, and coverage for Break or sustain. The published lineup is a practical option, not a universal guarantee.
