Choose Thornblade when you want a Grass damage dealer built around timed counters and stack-managed basic attacks. Its kit rewards using skills to build Sword Dance, then spending those stacks on basic attacks for extra damage while looking for well-timed defensive counters. It is not automatically the best choice for every team: Melloblum is a Grass Support focused on healing and team effects, while Fragrancier is a Dark Support that provides healing, Dark resistance reduction and team Dark-damage utility.
No current official source establishes a reliable Thornblade-versus-Irisalis winner, nor does it provide tested damage-per-second, difficulty or endgame-tier benchmarks. The practical decision is therefore about role, element, team needs and whether you enjoy timing windows—not an unsupported universal ranking.

What Thornblade does in an Aniimo team
Thornblade is listed as a Grass DPS. The official Aniimo Wiki lists total attributes of 509, made up of HP 96, ATK 121, P.DEF 74, M.DEF 73, BREAK 53 and REGEN 92. Those are the page’s current in-game reference values and can change when the game receives balance updates; they are not results from an independent benchmark.

In practical terms, Thornblade is for a player who wants to contribute direct Grass damage while actively managing a short-lived resource. The creature’s signature loop is not a passive damage bonus that runs by itself: every skill use adds a Sword Dance stack, and every basic attack spends one. That creates a deliberate choice between continuing to use skills and cashing in a stack at the right moment.

How Sword Dance changes Thornblade’s rotation
Building the stacks
The official trait says: “Each skill used grants 1 stack of [Sword Dance], up to 4 stacks, lasting 15s. Each basic attack costs 1 stack of [Sword Dance] to deal 180% extra damage.” The important limits are four stacks and a 15-second duration. A stack can expire before you spend it, so simply accumulating to four and waiting is not a guaranteed improvement.
- Use a skill to gain one Sword Dance stack.
- Continue using skills only while doing so serves the encounter and keeps the stack window manageable.
- When a basic attack is safe and useful, spend a stack to trigger its documented 180% extra damage.
- Repeat the build-and-spend cycle rather than assuming that four stacks must always be held simultaneously.
This is a description of how the documented trait can be managed, not a measured damage rotation. The official values do not establish the best skill order, a damage-per-second figure or a universal number of basic attacks per cycle. Your actual sequence will depend on enemy behavior, animation timing, available skills and whether interrupting your offense to defend is necessary.
Why the 15-second duration matters
A 15-second lifetime makes Sword Dance a timing resource. If an enemy is about to move, become invulnerable or force you to dodge, spending a stack on a basic attack may be preferable to risking expiration. Conversely, using every stack immediately may leave you without an enhanced basic attack when a vulnerable phase begins. The trait therefore rewards awareness of the next few seconds rather than a fixed button pattern.

What the 180% wording does—and does not—prove
The official text documents 180% extra damage on a basic attack that consumes a stack. It does not, by itself, provide a complete formula for total hit damage, critical scaling, defenses, buffs or mode-specific results. Treat the figure as the trait’s stated bonus, not as a promise that Thornblade out-damages every other creature.
Thornblade’s defensive and offensive skills
Thorny Defense: the timing-oriented counter
Thorny Defense reduces incoming damage by 20% and counters while active. If Thornblade is attacked just as the skill is used, it also raises critical rate by 30% for 15 seconds. The attack timing is the defining part: activating it well before an incoming hit can still provide the documented damage reduction and counter stance, but the extra critical-rate effect is tied to being attacked at activation.
This makes Thorny Defense more than an emergency button. It asks you to read an enemy’s attack timing, activate close to the impact and then use the resulting opening for offense. The official skill description does not list the stance’s cooldown, duration or counter damage, so those details should be checked in the current in-game description rather than guessed.

Thorny Impact: a separate critical-rate window
Thorny Impact increases critical rate by 15% for 15 seconds on hit. That is a shorter, more modest critical-rate bonus than the 30% effect associated with being struck as Thorny Defense is activated. Because both effects are documented as time-limited, a player who wants to capitalize on critical hits should pay attention to when each window begins instead of treating the bonuses as permanent stats.
Thorny Rain: repeated pressure
Thorny Rain is a rapid attack that can be used up to three times consecutively. The “up to three” limit describes the documented consecutive-use behavior; it does not establish that using all three is always optimal. A target may move, a defensive mechanic may become more urgent or a Sword Dance basic attack may be the better use of the available opening.
Aqua Defense: another counter stance in the listed kit
The official page also describes Aqua Defense as a counter stance that can apply Lockdown if Thornblade is struck at activation. The page’s skill description is the basis for including it here; the official page does not specify Lockdown’s duration, resistance rules or exact follow-up damage. Consider it another timing-sensitive option and verify the current tooltip for mode-specific behavior.
A practical Thornblade play pattern
The following sequence stays within the documented mechanics while leaving room for encounter-specific adjustment. It is a decision framework, not a tested optimal build.
- Read the encounter. Identify attacks that are predictable enough for a counter activation. If the enemy rarely commits to a telegraphed hit, do not build your entire plan around a counter window.
- Open with a useful skill. Each skill grants one Sword Dance stack. Use a skill that advances your immediate objective rather than pressing skills solely to reach four stacks.
- Choose a spending point. Use an enhanced basic attack when the target is exposed and you can remain in range safely. Remember that each basic attack consumes one stack.
- Reserve defense for a readable hit. Activate Thorny Defense, or the relevant counter stance, close to the incoming attack if you want to pursue the conditional critical-rate or Lockdown effect.
- Use critical windows deliberately. Thorny Impact’s 15-second critical-rate period and Thorny Defense’s conditional 30% period are opportunities, not permanent bonuses. Align attacks with the window when the target can be hit.
- Reassess before repeating. Sword Dance stacks last 15 seconds and cap at four. Spend or rebuild according to the next attack pattern instead of following a rigid loop through movement or invulnerability.
Thornblade compared with role-based alternatives
“Similar” can mean similar element, similar slot or simply another creature a player is considering. These choices are not interchangeable in the documented roles. The clearest comparison is what each creature contributes to a team.
| Creature | Listed role | Element | Documented emphasis | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thornblade | DPS | Grass | Sword Dance stacks, enhanced basic attacks, timed counters and critical-rate windows. | You need direct Grass damage and enjoy active timing and stack management. |
| Melloblum | Support | Grass | Team-oriented thorn damage, healing and removal of negative effects in its listed skills. | Your Grass team needs sustain, cleansing or team utility more than another DPS slot. |
| Fragrancier | Support | Dark | Healing, Dark resistance reduction and team Dark-damage utility. | Your team is built around Dark damage or benefits more from support amplification and healing. |
| Irisalis | Not established in current official descriptions | Not established | No reliable current comparative stats, build information or performance data are published in the current official material. | You should compare the current in-game descriptions directly before making a head-to-head decision. |
Thornblade versus Melloblum
Thornblade and Melloblum share the Grass element but not the same job. Thornblade occupies the documented DPS role and asks the player to convert skills into enhanced basic attacks while timing counters. Melloblum is listed as a Grass Support whose skills provide healing, team-oriented thorn damage and negative-effect removal.

If your group already has dependable healing and cleansing, Thornblade may fill a missing damage slot. If survival, recovery or removal of harmful effects is the limiting factor, Melloblum’s listed utility addresses a different problem. Choosing one over the other is therefore a composition decision, not evidence that one creature is stronger in every activity.
Thornblade versus Fragrancier
Fragrancier is a Dark Support, not a direct DPS substitute. Its listed utility includes healing, reducing Dark resistance and supporting team Dark damage. A Dark-focused lineup may gain more from those effects than from adding another individual attacker, while a team seeking Grass damage has a different elemental objective.
Compare the team’s damage plan first: Thornblade is the documented choice for a Grass DPS slot; Fragrancier is the documented choice when Dark support effects and healing are the priority. No common test environment or comparative numbers are documented in official sources to justify ranking their damage contributions against each other.
Is Thornblade better than Irisalis?
A community question is phrased as “Any reason to use Thornblade over irisalis?” That wording captures a real decision, but it is not proof of a matchup result. Current official descriptions do not establish Irisalis’s current official stats, role, build requirements or performance relative to Thornblade. Without those details, declaring Thornblade the winner—or claiming Irisalis is superior—would go beyond what is documented.
Use a role-and-play-style test instead:
- Pick Thornblade if you specifically want a documented Grass DPS with timed counter mechanics and a stack-to-basic-attack loop.
- Investigate Irisalis in the current game client if Irisalis may fill a different role, element or team function that your composition needs.
- Do not infer a winner from rarity, community wording or a single skill. A valid comparison would need current official descriptions plus comparable testing in the same mode, build and conditions.
This decision can change when an up-to-date Irisalis page and credible comparative data are available. Until then, Thornblade’s documented identity is clear, while the head-to-head claim is not established.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide which creature your team actually needs
Step 1: Identify the empty team job
List what the team lacks before looking at individual attacks. If the missing job is direct Grass damage, Thornblade matches the documented role. If the missing job is healing, cleansing or team effects, Melloblum’s listed support kit is more relevant. If the team is organized around Dark damage and needs resistance reduction or healing, Fragrancier addresses that support requirement.

Step 2: Check elemental alignment
Thornblade and Melloblum are listed as Grass creatures, while Fragrancier is listed as Dark. Element alone does not decide a team, but it determines which damage plan and support effects can fit together. Do not select a support simply because it shares an element if your group already has enough utility and lacks a damage dealer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 3: Decide how much execution you want
Thornblade’s documented mechanics reward reading attacks, activating counters at the right time, watching 15-second windows and deciding when to spend Sword Dance stacks. That is a more hands-on pattern than selecting a creature solely for a passive team effect. Players who prefer deliberate timing may find the kit appealing; players who want support output without managing counter windows may prefer a listed Support.
Step 4: Confirm the current tooltips
Values and skill text can change with updates. Before committing resources, check the current in-game descriptions for Thornblade, the support creatures you are considering and Irisalis. Pay particular attention to counter duration, cooldowns, Lockdown behavior and any changes to Sword Dance, because those details determine how the documented mechanics function in a live build.
Common mistakes when evaluating Thornblade
- Calling it an automatic top damage dealer. The listed ATK and 180% extra-damage wording describe the kit, but no independent damage-per-second or endgame ranking is established.
- Holding all four stacks indefinitely. Sword Dance lasts 15 seconds, so stacks can expire. The correct spending point depends on the encounter.
- Using counters without watching attacks. Thorny Defense and Aqua Defense are timing-oriented. Activating them without a likely incoming hit may miss their conditional benefits.
- Treating every critical bonus as permanent. Thorny Impact’s 15-second increase and Thorny Defense’s conditional 30% increase are time-limited effects.
- Comparing supports and DPS as if they occupy the same slot. Melloblum and Fragrancier provide documented team utility; Thornblade is listed as a DPS.
- Turning a community question into a benchmark. The Irisalis question identifies what players want to know, but it does not supply comparable stats or testing.
What is and is not established about performance
The official descriptions establish Thornblade’s listed role, attributes and skill mechanics. They support describing a rotation that builds and spends Sword Dance, uses timed counters and aligns attacks with critical-rate windows. They do not establish a universal damage ranking, difficulty rating, best build, best mode, break-speed lead or endgame tier.
That distinction matters when resources are limited. A documented mechanic can tell you what a creature is designed to do; only comparable testing under stated conditions can show how it performs against another creature in a specific mode. Until such testing is available, make the choice according to your team’s missing role and your preferred execution style.

Decision checklist
- Do I need a Grass DPS rather than another Support?
- Will I actively manage Sword Dance stacks that expire after 15 seconds?
- Can I recognize enemy attacks well enough to use Thorny Defense or Aqua Defense as intended?
- Would Thorny Impact’s or Thorny Defense’s temporary critical-rate windows fit the way I play?
- Does my team instead need Melloblum’s healing, thorn damage or negative-effect removal?
- Does a Dark-focused team benefit more from Fragrancier’s healing, Dark resistance reduction and team Dark utility?
- Am I making an Irisalis comparison without current, comparable information?
- Have I checked the latest in-game tooltips for values that may have changed?
Verdict
Use Thornblade when its documented identity matches your plan: a Grass DPS with a stack-to-basic-attack loop and timing-based counter play. Build your decisions around spending Sword Dance before its 15-second lifetime ends, reading incoming attacks for counter activations and using temporary critical-rate windows deliberately.
Choose Melloblum or Fragrancier when your team needs their listed support functions rather than another direct attacker. As for Irisalis, current official descriptions cannot establish a fair head-to-head winner, so the responsible choice is to compare the live role and tooltip information in your own version of Aniimo instead of relying on an unsupported ranking.
