Missing Nintendo’s limited The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 is easier to accept when you can add Zelda styling—and solve a real handheld-comfort problem—to the Switch 2 you already own. The important distinction is that Nintendo’s official accessory is a carrying case and screen protector. It is not an ergonomic grip shell. Palm support comes from separate, third-party grip products.
What Nintendo is actually selling
Nintendo’s Japanese announcement names the official accessory Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition. It is a themed travel case bundled with a screen protector, scheduled for October 29, 2026, at a Japan tax-included MSRP of 3,980 yen. The case protects the console during transport and adds Zelda artwork, but the announcement does not describe molded hand grips or any other ergonomic palm-support feature.

Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition for October 29, 2026. Nintendo’s Japanese listing gives a tax-included MSRP of 62,980 yen. It identifies the unit as a Japan-only, Japanese-language system and explicitly states: “This product does not come with a game.” In other words, this is a collector-focused hardware edition, not a software bundle.

The included Joy-Con 2 Grip is the standard controller accessory in the box. It should not be confused with a handheld grip case that surrounds the console and supports your palms while the Joy-Cons are attached.

Why a separate grip can help with hand pain
If your discomfort comes from the Switch 2’s relatively flat handheld shape, a larger grip changes the contact points in your hands. TechRadar’s July 5, 2026 review of the Genki Attack Vector describes covers for the Switch 2 and Joy-Con controllers with three interchangeable grip shapes. The reviewer found that the Balance grips sat naturally in the center of the palms and that both larger grip sets made handheld play more comfortable and secure.

- Installation: Attaching the grips is initially difficult, so expect a tighter, more deliberate fit than with a simple slip-on cover.
- Movement: Added weight and leverage can allow the Joy-Cons to rock slightly while attached to the console.
- Bulk: Larger grips improve palm support but make the handheld setup less compact than the bare Switch 2.

You can use both categories together: keep the Switch 2 in the Zelda case for travel, then attach an ergonomic grip when playing at home. Check the grip’s dimensions and dock compatibility before buying; a bulky shell may need to be removed before the console fits its dock or carrying case.
Can the special-edition Joy-Cons stay visible?
Yes, if you choose a case that leaves the controller faces exposed or uses clear sections. The Nintendo carrying case is the safer choice when your priority is preserving the green-and-gold design while traveling, because it protects the system without permanently covering the Joy-Cons during play. A grip shell, by contrast, may wrap around the controller edges or backs. Inspect product photos and compatibility notes to see which parts of the anniversary finish remain visible.

Choose an ergonomic grip if palm strain is the real problem
A larger, Switch 2-compatible grip is the more relevant purchase when long handheld sessions leave your palms or fingers uncomfortable. The Genki Attack Vector review supports improved comfort and security from its larger grip options, while also warning about installation, weight and movement.
Buy both when you travel and play handheld often
The case and grip solve different problems. Treat the case as storage and transport protection, and the grip as a removable play accessory. Before ordering, make sure the assembled console can still be stored safely and that the grip does not interfere with your preferred dock setup.
