Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B together to reset the graphics driver while Windows is running. Microsoft includes this shortcut in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting guidance for flickering, scrambled, or blank displays. A short beep or momentary screen flicker is normal feedback that the reset was attempted.
What the shortcut does
The key combination restarts the Windows graphics driver, rather than rebooting the whole computer. That can restore the picture when the driver has stopped responding or the display output has become corrupted. It cannot repair a failed monitor, a damaged cable, a loose connector, or every application-compatibility problem.

How to use Win+Ctrl+Shift+B
- Leave the affected Windows PC powered on.
- Press and hold the Windows logo key, Ctrl, Shift, and B at the same time.
- Wait briefly. You may hear a beep or see the screen flicker.
- If the picture returns, save your work and watch for the symptom to recur.
- If nothing changes, continue with the hardware and software checks below rather than repeatedly pressing the shortcut.
The beep or flicker only indicates that Windows received the command and attempted the reset. It does not prove that the underlying fault is permanently resolved.

Use Task Manager to narrow down the cause
For recurring flicker in Windows 11, Microsoft identifies two common cause classes: a display-driver problem and an incompatible app. Task Manager provides a practical distinction.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If the screen is too difficult to use, try opening it with Ctrl + Alt + Delete first.
- Watch whether the Task Manager window flickers along with the rest of the display.
- If Task Manager flickers too, the display driver is probably involved.
- If Task Manager remains stable while other windows flicker, an incompatible application is more likely.
This test identifies the more likely cause; it is not a definitive hardware diagnosis.

What to try when the shortcut does not help
Check the monitor and connections
- Confirm that the monitor is switched on and receiving power.
- Reseat the HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable at both ends.
- Try another compatible cable.
- Connect the PC to a different monitor or television if one is available.
These checks separate a Windows graphics problem from a connection or display failure. A driver reset cannot restore a monitor with no power or a cable that cannot carry a signal.
Repair a likely display-driver problem
If Task Manager flickers too, use Windows’ display-driver troubleshooting. After a recent Windows Update, rolling the driver back may help. Otherwise, check for a newer driver, or uninstall and reinstall the existing display driver. The exact options and wording can vary by Windows edition and hardware manufacturer.

If the screen is too unstable for normal use, start Windows in Safe Mode and perform the driver work there. Restarting is also part of Microsoft’s escalation guidance when the shortcut produces no improvement.
Investigate an incompatible application
If Task Manager stays stable, update the application that appears to trigger the flicker. If updating does not help, remove the application temporarily and check whether the display stabilizes. Add applications back one at a time if you need to identify the trigger.

Choosing the next step
| Observed symptom | Most likely cause class | Least disruptive next action |
|---|---|---|
| Brief flicker or scrambled image | Graphics driver may have stalled | Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B |
| Task Manager flickers with everything else | Display driver | Update, roll back, or reinstall the driver |
| Task Manager stays stable while other windows flicker | Incompatible application | Update or remove the suspected app |
| Persistent blank screen | Connection, monitor, driver, or app | Check power and cables, then test another display and continue driver troubleshooting |
| No change after all checks | Unresolved software or hardware fault | Restart, use Safe Mode, and seek hardware-specific support |
Windows versions and support status
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so systems that remain on Windows 10 may not receive ongoing security or feature support even though the shortcut is documented there. The key combination itself does not require a separate download or physical accessory.

When a restart is still necessary
Use a normal restart if the graphics reset does nothing, Windows remains unusable, or the display repeatedly fails after recovery. A restart reloads more of the operating system than the driver-only shortcut. If the blank screen persists after restarting, verify the monitor and cable with another combination, then use Safe Mode or driver recovery to determine whether Windows or the hardware is responsible.
