Three separate security stories stand out this week: ShinyHunters says it will not publish data it claims came from the FBI, a Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) breach reportedly affected millions of people, and a researcher demonstrated a conditional exploit chain involving OBS Studio’s Browser Source. The FBI-related claim and the group’s promise are not independently verified; the DMDC figures come from a Defense Department official quoted by CNN; and the OBS attack depended on unsafe handling of viewer-controlled content.
Will ShinyHunters release the FBI-related data?
404 Media reported on September 28, 2026, that ShinyHunters told the outlet it had decided from the beginning not to publish data it claims to have obtained in an FBI-related breach. The group said: “Since the very beginning we had made our decision that we would never publish this data. We have never intended to nor have we ever planned to.” That is the group’s stated intention, not a guarantee of what it will do later.

The report describes the alleged cache as personal information about FBI employees and applicants, including addresses, job roles, spouses’ names, and medical records. Those details are claims about the breach and the data; the available reporting does not establish the cache’s completeness or independently verify what it contains.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHackaday’s October 2 roundup also recounts the group’s objection to an FBI press release and quotes it describing the incident as “This was all a marketing campaign to protect our business and actively combat disinformation”. That is ShinyHunters’ characterization, not neutral confirmation of the incident. The distinction matters: the FBI’s account and the group’s self-description are competing claims, while the reported decision not to publish comes from the group itself. The concern is consequential because criminals in the same ecosystem have previously used hacked phone data to track and harass FBI agents.

How many people were affected by the Pentagon data breach?
The Pentagon-related incident is separate from the FBI story. It involved a vulnerable server belonging to the Defense Manpower Data Center, which handles records for current and former service members and others. CNN reporting republished by KVIA says unauthorized users began accessing files in October 2025; the problem was discovered and remediated in July 2026, roughly nine months later, according to a breach notification letter reviewed by CNN.
A Defense Department official told CNN the reported breach affected 2.76 million living people and 294,000 deceased people. These are the official’s reported affected-population figures, not a count independently published in a forensic report. The group can include current or former personnel and dependents. The exposed information reportedly included Social Security numbers and other personal information; an “occupational specialty” field appeared in some cases.

Hackaday describes DMDC as handling records for 60 million current and former service members. That is the center’s records population, not the number reported affected by this incident. The reporting does not identify who accessed the server, so it does not establish that a foreign intelligence service was responsible.
Is OBS vulnerable to malicious chat messages?
Potentially, but not simply because someone sends a message in chat. In a September 22, 2026 technical disclosure, Orange Cyberdefense Switzerland researcher Dylan Iffrig-Bourfa described a chain demonstrated with OBS Studio 32.2.2 on updated Windows 11. The remote entry point was a Twitch chat overlay that inserted viewer messages as raw HTML without sanitizing them. That created script execution in an OBS Browser Source.

The demonstrated chain then relied on the embedded Chromium browser running without its normal sandbox and on its bundled V8 engine being vulnerable to CVE-2024-7971. Orange reported the embedded components as Chromium 127.0.6533.120 and V8 12.7.224.18; the V8 issue affected Chromium releases before 128.0.6613.84. Iffrig-Bourfa described the chain as reaching arbitrary code execution on the streamer’s machine.
This is a conditional attack path, not evidence that an unmodified OBS installation is automatically remotely exploitable by any viewer. The overlay’s unsafe rendering of attacker-controlled content was a necessary part of the demonstrated remote entry point. An attacker-controlled page loaded into a Browser Source or browser dock is also relevant to the browser-exploitation stage.

The disclosure says Microsoft had documented exploitation of CVE-2024-7971 in the wild and that CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Orange reported OBS browser and sandbox fixes in progress, with related pull requests merged on September 10 and 17, 2026. That describes the disclosure’s status at the time; check current OBS release information and install an updated release rather than assuming those changes are already present in every version.
What streamers and overlay authors should do
- Render viewer messages as text, not raw HTML. Iffrig-Bourfa’s guidance is: “If a chat message is text, render it as text. If you genuinely need HTML, sanitize it properly.”
- Treat everything loaded into a Browser Source as untrusted. The researcher cautions that “no widget should ever render viewer content as HTML.”
- Review overlays and browser docks that load third-party pages or display chat, and remove or replace components that unsafely insert viewer-controlled content.
- Check the current OBS release information for browser and sandbox fixes, then update. The disclosure’s pull-request dates alone do not establish which released version contains a fix.
Other security issues in this week’s roundup
Hackaday’s October 2 edition also discusses attacks against operating-system file notification systems, a DIVD compromise involving Zammad, and active exploitation of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager and Citrix NetScaler vulnerabilities. These are separate stories, not part of the FBI, DMDC, or OBS incidents above.
