The car is “driverless” only for the delivery leg, not autonomous in the sense of handling the trip on its own.
Who remotely drives Halo.Car’s cars?
Halo.Car, a Las Vegas startup, uses specially trained human pilots at computer stations to deliver empty electric cars to customers. The pilot drives with conventional controls—a steering wheel and pedals—while using live video and sensor feeds. Once the vehicle arrives, the customer takes over; when the rental ends, control returns to a remote pilot for the delivery back.

Axios reported in 2023 that Halo.Car had tested remote delivery since 2022 and said its technology was ready to remove the backup safety driver. The company’s CEO, Anand Nandakumar, summed up the service as: “If Zipcar could come to you like an Uber, that’s Halo.Car.” Axios

How remote driving works
The pilot steers and controls the car from a remote station rather than riding inside it. In the Halo.Car setup described by Axios, the vehicle was a modified electric Kia Niro SUV, requested through the Halo app. T-Mobile 5G was the primary connection, with AT&T and Verizon as backups intended to support low latency and reliability. The connection is part of the control system, not just a convenience: the operator needs timely video and vehicle data to respond to what is happening on the road. NIST’s 2020 paper on vehicle teleoperation explains that remote operation depends on reliable interfaces among the vehicle, cloud and edge systems. It describes teleoperation as a way to assist self-driving vehicles in situations they cannot handle alone, and to perform tasks such as taxi delivery, valet parking and goods delivery. NIST

The early rollout was tightly bounded rather than an open-ended driverless service. Axios reported these 2023 details:

- Monitoring: employees followed in a chase car and could monitor and stop remotely driven vehicles.
Halo.Car said it planned to grow the Las Vegas fleet to “hundreds” before expanding to other cities. These figures and plans describe the rollout as reported in 2023, not necessarily the company’s current operating limits. Does “driverless” mean the car is autonomous?
Not in the everyday sense of a car independently driving itself throughout the delivery. Halo.Car’s delivery vehicle has no person inside, but a human is actively controlling it remotely. That is different from an onboard automated-driving system making the driving decisions by itself—and it is not evidence of unrestricted Level 5 autonomy.

NIST characterized vehicle teleoperation as being in its initial stages in 2020, and described it largely as support for automated vehicles in situations they cannot manage alone. A useful way to distinguish systems is to ask where the driving decisions come from:
- Onboard automation: software in the vehicle performs the driving task within its designed operating conditions.
- Remote human control: a person outside the vehicle steers and operates it, as in Halo.Car’s delivery model.
- Human assistance: automation remains involved, but a remote operator helps with a difficult situation or task.
Weather, obstacles, emergency interactions and loss or degradation of the network are important edge cases for any remotely operated vehicle. The available descriptions establish that redundancy and monitoring were part of Halo.Car’s early approach, but do not establish how every such event is handled.

Is remote driving a job you can do from home?
Remote vehicle operation is a real occupation, but “remote” does not necessarily mean working from home. Halo.Car’s pilots operate from computer stations, and the cited descriptions do not provide a current hiring policy or qualifications for its roles.

Vay offers a related example in passenger mobility and trucking. Its careers page says it has rolled out vehicles in Europe and the United States without a human inside, completed “10’s of thousands of trips,” and is hiring CDL-licensed remote truck drivers to operate commercial trucks from specialized stations. The page also says Vay has a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Those details are Vay’s own statements on its current careers page. Vay careers

Where else is remote vehicle operation being used?
Teleoperation is not limited to rental-car delivery. A California Department of Transportation and UC Berkeley report describes Phantom Auto’s platform as enabling people to remotely drive, assist and monitor forklifts, trucks, robots and cars using live video, audio and data. It describes Phantom Core SDK as a vehicle-agnostic cloud platform for low-latency teleoperation over 4G LTE, Wi-Fi or 5G. California DOT/UC Berkeley report
Together, these examples show different roles for remote operation: Halo.Car uses a human pilot to deliver a rental car, Vay highlights remote commercial truck driving, and Phantom Auto supplies software for operating or assisting a range of vehicles. In each case, “no driver inside” describes the vehicle’s cabin—not necessarily the absence of a human driver.
