It was a virtual effect, not human teleportation. In a 2017 demonstration reported by Futurism, Microsoft HoloLens overlaid blue and orange Portal-style gateways on a real living room. The player moved a virtual Companion Cube through them, making it appear to jump between surfaces. People still could not walk through a portal or a wall.
What the 2017 Portal-in-augmented-reality demo showed
Patrick Caughill’s February 7, 2017, Futurism report described a Portal-inspired augmented-reality experience running on Microsoft HoloLens. Unlike a conventional game displayed on a flat screen, the headset placed the game elements into the viewer’s physical surroundings.

The player used a handheld device to position two gateways: one blue and one orange. Once placed on surfaces around the room, those portals framed a virtual Companion Cube. Moving the cube through one gateway made it appear in the other location, while the furniture and walls remained part of the real room.
Microsoft described the broader concept in wording reproduced by Futurism: “In mixed reality, people, places, and objects from your physical and virtual worlds merge together in a blended environment that becomes your canvas.”

How the demonstration worked
- Put on HoloLens. The headset displayed the real living-room view with computer-generated objects layered over it.
- Place the portals. The player used a device to set blue and orange portals on surfaces in the room.
- Move the Companion Cube. The virtual cube was directed into one portal and appeared to emerge from the other.
- Use the room’s geometry. Futurism said HoloLens could recognize obstacles such as stairs, so the cube appeared to bounce down them. That is the report’s description of the demonstration, not an independently tested result.
Can you teleport through the portals or walls?
No. The teleportation applied only to the computer-generated Companion Cube. The portals did not create openings in drywall, move physical furniture, or transport the player. A person wearing the headset would still encounter the ordinary wall, stair, or other obstacle in the home.
That distinction is the key to understanding the “real life Portal” wording: the room was real, but the portals and cube were virtual elements aligned with it.

Futurism quoted a $3,000 starting price for HoloLens hardware in February 2017, attributing that figure to Microsoft. That is a historical price claim from the report, not a current price or a recommendation to buy the headset today.

Why the demo mattered—and what it did not prove
It made a familiar game mechanic spatial
Portal’s defining idea—entering one doorway and exiting another—normally operates inside a rendered game world. The HoloLens demonstration mapped that idea onto a living room, allowing the player to choose locations in the physical environment and see the cube react to its apparent layout.
It was not a physical-teleportation experiment
No physical object crossed a portal. The Companion Cube was rendered imagery, and the effect depended on the headset’s view of the room. The report offers an illustration of mixed-reality interaction rather than evidence that matter, people, or walls can be teleported.

Its present status is unclear
The source is a contemporaneous secondary report from 2017, not a current Microsoft product page or a technical evaluation. It does not establish whether the exact demo can still be downloaded or run, which HoloLens editions support it, or what equivalent hardware would cost now.
The practical takeaway
This was an inventive example of Portal in augmented reality: a real home served as the stage, while portals and a Companion Cube supplied the illusion. If you are asking whether it let someone teleport around their house, the accurate answer remains no—the demo teleported a virtual cube in the headset’s view.
