The Galaxy S10 is not about to stop working, but its time as a primary phone for sensitive accounts is over. The original S10 family no longer has normal Samsung security support. If you use yours for banking, work access, password management, payments or authentication, replacing it is the responsible default. A sound S10 can still serve as a low-risk backup, camera or offline device while you plan the change.
Samsung’s normal support for the original S10 family has ended
This applies to the original Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+, and S10 5G, but firmware timing differs by model, carrier and region. It does not automatically apply to the later Galaxy S10 Lite, which had a different software history. Check Settings → About phone → Model number before relying on a firmware record or compatibility claim.
Android 12 is the final major Android version documented for the original S10 line. Samsung’s Knox support record lists Android 12 as the maximum OS upgrade and August 2023 as the end of guaranteed security-maintenance support. Individual firmware records show why it is better not to claim one universal final patch date: the U.S. SM-G973U record lists Android 12 with a March 1, 2023 security patch, while the unlocked U.S. SM-G973U1 record lists an October 1, 2022 patch.

A firmware upload date by itself does not prove that a phone is receiving current security fixes. For example, Samsung’s Chinese SM-G9730 page shows a June 1, 2026 firmware release while listing an October 1, 2022 security-patch level. Check the patch level, not just the latest release date shown on a page.

Samsung’s newer commitment to up to seven years of security updates applies to newer eligible Galaxy devices; it does not retroactively extend the S10’s support. Samsung’s security-update scope and current update information are useful for checking which devices are in scope. Samsung also notes that update timing can vary by model, device version and service version.
What the end of support means—and what it does not
An unsupported phone does not become compromised or unusable on a particular date. It does mean you should not expect Samsung’s normal device-level security maintenance to fix newly discovered vulnerabilities in the S10’s operating system, kernel, drivers or Samsung-specific components. A patch date alone cannot establish the probability that a particular owner will be hacked.
Your exposure also depends on how you use the phone. Sideloading apps, browsing to risky sites, installing software from unknown sources and relying on accounts without strong recovery options all increase the consequences of keeping an aging device. A phone used only for offline music has a different risk profile from one holding work credentials and bank access.
Google Play system updates can update some modular Google components, but they do not replace Samsung firmware maintenance. Check the Android patch level under Settings → About phone → Software information. To check Google Play system status, search Settings for Google Play system update; the menu path can vary by One UI version and carrier firmware.
Apps will not all stop working at once
Android 12 still runs many apps. Compatibility usually erodes app by app: a bank, employer or service can change its minimum Android version or device-integrity rules independently of another app. Do not assume that every banking app has the same requirement, or that an app which works today will remain supported indefinitely.

Google Play’s target-API rules are not a date when Android 12 devices suddenly lose all apps. From August 31, 2026, Google’s policy requires new apps and updates to target Android 16/API 36 or higher; existing apps must target Android 15/API 35 or higher to remain available to new users on newer Android versions. Those requirements concern what developers must target and app availability under Play policy, not an automatic shutdown of apps already installed on every older phone. Before deciding to keep the S10, open the apps you actually depend on and check their current requirements and sign-in behavior:
- Banking, brokerage and payment apps, including Google Wallet
- Password managers, passkeys and authenticator apps
- Work profiles, mobile-device-management apps and corporate VPNs
- Navigation, rideshare, messaging and video-call apps
- Smart-home apps and any service used for account recovery
Use four practical checks to make the decision
1. Security exposure
If the S10 is your everyday device for high-value accounts, work or sensitive communications, plan to replace it. Avoid treating it as the sole home for authentication credentials. If you keep it temporarily, keep apps current where possible, avoid sideloading and risky browsing, and make sure account recovery does not depend exclusively on that phone.

After years of use, battery condition may be a more obvious daily problem than the missing Android upgrade. Watch for sharply reduced runtime, unexpected shutdowns, overheating during ordinary use or charging, and charging that has become unreliable. A swollen battery or a screen or back cover separating from the frame is a safety issue: stop using or charging the phone and seek qualified repair or recycling guidance. Do not puncture or open a swollen lithium-ion battery.
A professional battery replacement can extend the useful life of a physically sound S10 for low-risk secondary use. It does not restore Samsung security support.

3. Carrier and network compatibility
There is no single compatibility answer for every U.S. S10. Acceptance depends on the precise model, LTE bands, carrier certification or whitelist, VoLTE provisioning, SIM or eSIM setup, whether the phone is unlocked, and the carrier’s network changes. The S10 5G’s early 5G hardware does not guarantee that a carrier will support it now or that it will work on every network.
Check the model number and have your carrier verify the phone’s IMEI before counting on it for calls, travel or emergency backup. A phone that works on one U.S. network may not be accepted on another.
4. The apps and features you need
Confirm that essential apps still install, launch and authenticate on the S10, and that your carrier supports its calling features. A feature can be present in the hardware yet unavailable through a particular service or configuration. If an essential app has stopped supporting Android 12 or rejects the phone’s security state, that is a practical reason to move on even if the rest of the device works.
What the S10 still does well
Its age does not erase its hardware strengths. Samsung’s original specification sheets document an OLED display, wireless charging, Samsung DeX, IP68 water-resistance rating and a headphone jack; microSD support is available on applicable models. The compact S10e may still suit people who prefer a smaller phone, while the S10 family’s cameras can remain useful in favorable conditions. The S10 5G has distinct hardware, including a 4,500mAh battery, as listed in its specification sheet.
Those are reasons to repurpose or keep a sound device, not evidence that it remains a good long-term security choice. IP68 was a rating for the device when new: age, drops, repairs and seal deterioration mean you should not assume a years-old phone remains water-resistant. Choose a replacement by the features and support you value

For any replacement, compare official update commitments and the features you would miss before buying. Samsung’s U.S. smartphone listings and support pages are better places to confirm current models and availability than a dated price sheet.
Transfer accounts before resetting or trading in the S10
Authenticator data does not always move automatically. Do not factory-reset, trade in or wipe the S10 until you have confirmed access to your accounts on the new phone, especially if the old device is the only place an authentication app or passkey is available.
- Back up photos, contacts, messages and other files you want to keep. Use Samsung Smart Switch or the relevant cloud backup where appropriate.
- Confirm you can sign in to your Google and Samsung accounts, and save recovery codes for important services.
- Transfer authenticator accounts and passkeys using each provider’s supported process, then test access on the new phone.
- Move any eSIM information through the carrier’s process, if applicable, and verify that your SIM, calls and essential apps work on the replacement.
- After confirming the new phone works, remove Google and Samsung accounts from the old device, remove the SIM and microSD card, and factory-reset it before sale or recycling.
- Use a reputable resale or recycling route. For repair, consult Samsung’s support and authorized repair options rather than treating an unofficial “like-new” claim as proof that the battery, seals or security state have been restored.

When a custom ROM is—and is not—a sensible path
A custom ROM can give an experienced owner a newer Android version or community-provided security patches, but it changes who you trust to maintain the phone and introduces compatibility risks. It is not a guaranteed way to make an S10 secure.
- Bootloader-unlock rules differ by region and model, and unlocking can erase the phone.
- Knox-related features may be permanently affected; banking, payments, streaming, enterprise software or other apps may reject the modified device or fail integrity checks.
- VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, camera quality, fingerprint features and Samsung-specific functions may be degraded or unavailable.
- ROM instructions and builds are model-specific, and community maintenance can stop.
Consider this only if you can verify the exact model and project, understand the recovery process, and accept that some important apps or functions may no longer work. For most owners who need a dependable primary phone, a supported replacement is the simpler choice.

- Replace it now if it is your sensitive-use primary phone, an essential app no longer works, the battery or hardware is unreliable, or your carrier cannot confirm compatibility.
- Keep it temporarily if your use is light, important apps work, the device is physically sound and you have a migration plan rather than depending on it indefinitely.
- Repurpose it as a Wi-Fi-only camera, media player, alarm clock or offline device. Minimize sensitive accounts and do not depend on it for unsupported payment or enterprise functions.
