It handles documents, spreadsheets, presentations, fillable forms and PDFs, while its stated DOCX, XLSX and PPTX compatibility makes it a practical starting point for exchanging files with Microsoft 365 users.
Why ONLYOFFICE is the best fit for a cross-platform Microsoft 365 replacement
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors officially target Windows, Linux and macOS. The desktop package includes word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, fillable forms and PDF tools, so you do not need separate applications for the common office tasks.

That combination matters if your files move between different operating systems or between your computer and colleagues who use Microsoft 365. ONLYOFFICE’s own product information highlights compatibility with DOCX, XLSX and PPTX and describes the suite as a replacement for Microsoft Office. Those are vendor claims rather than independent conversion benchmarks, but they make ONLYOFFICE the most direct choice for an Office-style workflow across all three desktop platforms.
The free desktop editors can be used without a Microsoft 365 subscription. ONLYOFFICE also offers optional paid plans and online services, so check which application or service you are installing if your goal is strictly offline, no-subscription work.

How the three main free options differ
| Suite | Windows, macOS and Linux | Microsoft-format positioning | Main strengths | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors | Official desktop editions for all three | Vendor states high compatibility and lists DOCX, XLSX and PPTX | Documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms and PDF tools in one package; familiar Office-like workflow | Compatibility and complex-file behavior should be validated with your own files; collaboration varies by connected service |
| LibreOffice | Official guidance for Windows, macOS and Linux distributions | Open-source project states compatibility with Microsoft Office formats | Open source, privacy-oriented, broad office feature set and strong avoidance of subscription software | Round-trip layout, fonts, macros and advanced Microsoft-specific features can require checking |
| FreeOffice | FreeOffice states it is always free on Windows, Mac and Linux | Designed as a conventional Office-style alternative | TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations; lightweight interface for Office-familiar users | Feature scope and licensing priorities differ from an open-source suite; test your workflow before switching |
Choose LibreOffice when open source and privacy come first
LibreOffice is described by The Document Foundation as “a powerful, free and private office suite.” It is open source and officially documents installation and support guidance for Windows, macOS and Linux distributions. That makes it the strongest alternative for readers who want publicly developed software, local control of files and no subscription requirement.
Its feature coverage is broad, but Microsoft-format compatibility remains a practical rather than absolute promise. A simple text document may transfer cleanly while a heavily formatted workbook, presentation with embedded fonts or macro-enabled file may not. The LibreOffice download material surfaced a 25.2.4 release listing in a page snapshot accessed in 2026; download pages change, so verify the current release before installing.
Rank #2
- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
Choose FreeOffice when a familiar interface matters most
FreeOffice is a secondary option for people who want a conventional Microsoft-style desktop experience. Its suite contains TextMaker for word processing, PlanMaker for spreadsheets and Presentations for slide decks. SoftMaker describes FreeOffice as “always free to use with Windows, Mac and Linux.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis can be attractive on a modest computer or for someone who wants to learn as little new interface as possible. The trade-off is that FreeOffice is proprietary freeware rather than an open-source project, so it appeals to a different priority set than LibreOffice.

What “compatible with Microsoft Office” really means
All three projects present support for Microsoft formats, but compatibility statements from the vendors are directional evidence, not a guarantee that every file will survive a round trip unchanged. The risk increases with files that rely on unusual fonts, complex styles, linked data, macros, embedded objects, advanced formulas, animations or collaborative editing features.
Before replacing Microsoft 365, make a small test set from your real work:
Rank #4
- Designed for Your Windows and Apple Devices | Install premium Office apps on your Windows laptop, desktop, MacBook or iMac. Works seamlessly across your devices for home, school, or personal productivity.
- Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook | Get premium versions of the essential Office apps that help you work, study, create, and stay organized.
- Up to 2 TB Shared Cloud Storage | Store and access your documents, photos, and files from your Windows, Mac or mobile devices.
- Premium Tools Across Your Devices | Your subscription lets you work across all of your Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices with apps that sync instantly through the cloud.
- Share Your Family Subscription | You can share all of your subscription benefits with up to 6 people for use across all their devices.
- Open representative DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files and compare page breaks, fonts, charts, formulas and slide positioning.
- Save edited copies back to the same formats, reopen them in the software your colleagues use and check for changes.
- Run any business-critical macros or automation separately; do not assume a macro will work merely because the file opens.
- Confirm that PDF export, form filling, printing and accessibility features meet your needs.
Offline editing versus collaboration and cloud features
Desktop editors are excellent for local files, but replacing Microsoft 365 may also mean replacing shared drives, browser editing, version history, comments and real-time co-authoring. ONLYOFFICE has optional online and paid services, while the capabilities of a free desktop installation are not identical to those connected services.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
List the collaboration functions your team actually uses before migrating. If several people edit the same document simultaneously, test the intended server or cloud setup, permissions, comments, conflict handling and version recovery. An application that opens a file correctly can still be the wrong choice if your workflow depends on integrated online collaboration.
Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
A practical migration checklist
- Install the desktop suite on each operating system you use. Confirm that the edition is the free desktop editor rather than an optional online plan.
- Import a representative file set. Include ordinary and difficult documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
- Inspect fidelity. Check fonts, layout, formulas, charts, images, print output and PDF exports.
- Test automation. Verify macros, templates, add-ins and external links where your work depends on them.
- Rehearse collaboration. Test shared editing, comments, permissions and version recovery with the actual service your team uses.
- Keep originals and a rollback path. Do not overwrite important files until the new workflow has passed review.
Which free replacement should you install?
Install ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors first if your deciding factors are a Microsoft-like workflow, stated DOCX/XLSX/PPTX compatibility and one desktop suite for Linux, macOS and Windows. Choose LibreOffice instead when open source, privacy and broad local features outweigh interface familiarity. Choose FreeOffice when you want a lightweight, conventional Office-style interface and its proprietary freeware model is acceptable.
None of these choices should be treated as a universal one-click replacement for every Microsoft 365 deployment. Your own files, fonts, macros and collaboration requirements are the final compatibility test.
