Yes. You can share a travel or data-only eSIM’s cellular connection with a laptop, tablet, or another phone. Select the eSIM as your phone’s mobile-data line, then enable the phone’s built-in Personal Hotspot or Android tethering. The second device connects to the phone’s Wi-Fi network; it does not need an eSIM of its own.
How eSIM hotspot sharing works
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile, not a separate networking feature. Once its plan is installed, the phone treats it like any other cellular line. Hotspot traffic uses whichever line is selected for mobile data. On a dual-SIM iPhone, Personal Hotspot follows the line chosen under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data.

The phone then shares that connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. Google’s Android guidance says most Android phones can tether by all three methods. A Wi-Fi hotspot is usually simplest for several devices; Bluetooth is an alternative when Wi-Fi is inconvenient; USB is a wired option that can be more stable and private.
Share an eSIM connection from an iPhone
1. Check the phone and eSIM
- The iPhone must be unlocked if the eSIM uses a different carrier from your home line.
- Install and activate the travel or data eSIM, and confirm that it has usable service in your current location.
- Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later models as compatible examples, although regional model differences can apply.
2. Make the eSIM the data line
- Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data.
- Select the eSIM line.
- Leave your home line active for calls or messages if you need it, but verify that the eSIM is the line labeled for cellular data.
3. Turn on Personal Hotspot
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- If Personal Hotspot has not been configured, use Settings > Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot and follow the prompts.
- Note the Wi-Fi password shown on the hotspot screen.
4. Connect the other device
On the laptop, tablet, or second phone, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the iPhone’s hotspot name, and enter the displayed password. Apple also supports pairing over Bluetooth or connecting by USB. For USB tethering, use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable.

Share an eSIM connection from Android
1. Open hotspot settings
On many phones, swipe down to Quick Settings and tap Hotspot. You can also open Settings > Network & Internet or Settings > Connections, then choose Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Exact labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
2. Configure the network
- Confirm that the eSIM is the phone’s active mobile-data line. If the phone has two SIMs, look for a Mobile data or Preferred SIM setting.
- Set or confirm the hotspot name and password.
- Turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot.
3. Join from the second device
Open Wi-Fi on the laptop, tablet, or phone, select the hotspot name, and enter its password. Android also offers Bluetooth and USB tethering. Android-to-Mac USB tethering is not supported according to Google’s platform guidance, so use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for that combination.

How many devices can connect?
Google’s current Android help guidance says a phone can share mobile data with up to 10 other devices through a Wi-Fi hotspot. T-Mobile likewise describes connections to up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled or tethered devices. The practical limit can be lower on a particular phone, plan, or carrier configuration, so treat 10 as a stated platform or service maximum rather than a guaranteed performance level.

Why an eSIM hotspot may not work
The plan blocks or limits tethering
Some carriers restrict tethering or charge extra for it. A data-only travel eSIM may permit phone use while prohibiting hotspot sharing, or it may provide a separate hotspot allowance. Check the plan’s terms for hotspot permission, high-speed hotspot data, throttling, and top-up rules before buying or activating it.

The wrong SIM is selected for data
On a dual-SIM iPhone, hotspot traffic follows the line under Cellular Data. If the home line is selected, the hotspot can consume that line’s allowance instead of the travel eSIM. Android phones have equivalent preferred-data controls, though the menu name differs.
The phone is locked or incompatible
A carrier-locked phone may reject a travel eSIM from another provider. Confirm that the handset is unlocked, supports eSIM, and uses a regional model compatible with the destination network’s bands. Also verify that the eSIM has registered on a supported local network.

The connection method is the problem
- Wi-Fi: easiest for multiple devices, but uses more phone battery.
- Bluetooth: useful as a lower-profile alternative, generally for one device at a time.
- USB: wired and often steadier; requires a data-capable cable and may not work with every computer pairing.
The phone is conserving power
Tethering can drain the phone quickly. Google recommends plugging the phone in while sharing and switching tethering off when finished. Keep the phone where it has a strong cellular signal; a weak signal can make every connected device appear slow or offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose an eSIM plan for hotspot use
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Hotspot permission | Whether tethering is included, restricted, or unavailable |
| High-speed allowance | Full-speed hotspot data, a separate cap, or throttling threshold |
| Coverage | Destination countries, partner networks, and supported local bands |
| Device compatibility | Unlocked status, eSIM support, and regional model requirements |
| Sharing methods | Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, or a subset of these |
| Cost and validity | Price, data amount, validity period, and top-up conditions |
Do not assume that “unlimited” phone data means unlimited hotspot data. The plan’s tethering clause controls what the second device can use, and hotspot traffic may slow after a stated allowance.

A reliable travel setup
- Install the eSIM before departure while you have Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and that the eSIM is supported in the destination.
- Set the eSIM as the cellular-data line after arrival.
- Test Personal Hotspot or Android tethering with one device before relying on it for work.
- Pack a compatible USB-C or Lightning data cable as a wired fallback, and carry a charger or power bank.
- Turn hotspot off when finished to avoid unnecessary battery drain and background data use.
The key distinction is simple: the eSIM stays in the phone, while the phone shares its active cellular connection. If the plan permits tethering and the phone is unlocked and correctly configured, a laptop or second phone can get online without its own eSIM.
