It combines a Blackwell RTX GPU, a Grace CPU and up to 128 GB of unified memory to run very large AI models locally, rather than sending every request to a cloud service. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says Microsoft and NVIDIA spent four years and several thousand engineering years developing it.
What Jensen Huang said about Surface Laptop Ultra
At a developer event in London reported by TechRadar on 18 October 2026, Jensen Huang described the Surface Laptop Ultra as a long-term joint effort between Microsoft and NVIDIA. His exact statement was: “This computer is going to be incredible – it took us four years to build it,” Huang told attendees including TechRadar Pro, “this project is really a work of love – we had several thousand engineering years dedicated to it, we build a brand new revolutionary chip, a whole new line of PCs, it’s so beautiful – you’re going to love it.”

The comments explain the product’s positioning: this is not simply a conventional Surface refresh with a faster graphics chip. It is Microsoft’s implementation of NVIDIA’s RTX Spark design, intended to make workstation-class local AI practical in a laptop form factor.

NVIDIA announced RTX Spark PCs as available on 16 October 2026. Its RTX Spark materials also specify up to 128 GB of unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance. NVIDIA’s product catalog places Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra in that lineup and identifies N1X, Blackwell RTX graphics and unified-memory configurations.
Those dates are not identical milestones: Microsoft’s date concerns Surface Laptop Ultra preorder availability, while NVIDIA’s date refers to RTX Spark PCs generally. Actual memory tiers, prices, retailer stock and delivery dates should be checked for the specific Surface configuration before ordering.

Why unified memory matters for local AI
Large language models are limited by how much model data can fit in fast memory and how quickly the system can move that data during inference. A 128 GB unified-memory ceiling gives the CPU and GPU access to the same pool instead of forcing a model to be split between separate system RAM and graphics memory. That design can reduce transfer overhead and makes unusually large local models more plausible than on laptops with a small discrete graphics-memory pool.
Microsoft says the computer can run models larger than 120 billion parameters locally. NVIDIA describes RTX Spark’s 1-petaflop figure specifically as FP4 AI performance, a low-precision format commonly used to reduce memory requirements and increase inference throughput. Neither statement establishes how quickly a particular model will generate tokens, how much context it can hold, or how performance changes during a long session.

What “local” means in practice
- Model weights and inference can be kept on the laptop instead of being sent to a remote AI service.
- Local execution can help with privacy, offline work and predictable access when a cloud endpoint is unavailable.
- Large models still require compatible software, suitable quantization and enough remaining memory for the operating system and application.
- A peak AI-throughput number does not by itself predict response speed for every model or tool.
What the computer is supposed to do
Huang described a PC that can remain at a desk while its owner directs it remotely, including by text, to render images or update presentation slides. That is a description of the intended agent workflow and demonstrations associated with the platform, not an independently measured guarantee that every application can be controlled this way.
The practical idea is an always-available workstation: an agent could receive a request, use local models to interpret it, open compatible creative or productivity software, perform a task and leave the result on the computer. Whether that works reliably depends on the individual application’s automation interfaces, Windows support and the permissions granted to the agent.

Is RTX Spark suitable for local AI?
On paper, RTX Spark is aimed directly at local AI. The combination of up to 128 GB of unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of FP4 performance addresses the two constraints that matter most for running large models: fitting the model and processing it efficiently.

Surface Laptop Ultra versus a MacBook Pro
The available announcements do not establish an independent comparison with a MacBook Pro. A fair decision requires testing the exact configurations on the software you use, including local-model runtimes, creative applications, compilers, plugins and peripherals.
For comparison, buyers should examine these factors rather than relying on the 1-petaflop headline:
- Local-model capacity: compare usable memory after the operating system and applications are loaded.
- AI throughput: check measured inference speed at the model size, quantization and context length you actually need.
- Software compatibility: verify native or emulated support for Windows applications, drivers and development frameworks.
- Sustained performance: look for long-duration tests, because a short peak result may not represent performance during extended rendering or inference.
- Creative and gaming support: confirm that your editing, 3D, audio and game software supports the GPU architecture and Windows environment.
- Portability and price: compare weight, battery behavior, charger size, configuration-specific pricing and warranty terms.
What is not yet established
Huang’s “you’re going to love it” and similar broad descriptions are promotional framing. The published material does not provide independent benchmarks against a named competing laptop, sustained thermal measurements, battery results, a complete price list or a definitive compatibility matrix for Windows-on-Arm software.

Quick Recap
Who should pay attention to Surface Laptop Ultra
- Local-AI developers: the memory ceiling is the most consequential specification if you need to experiment with very large models without a cloud server.
- Creative professionals: the Blackwell GPU may be relevant for AI-assisted image, video and 3D workflows, subject to application support.
- Technical teams: a single desk-side PC that can host models and automate approved desktop tasks could simplify some internal workflows.
- Typical laptop buyers: wait for configuration pricing, battery information and independent software testing before treating the headline specifications as a reason to upgrade.
