An app can make a chatbot answer in a dead relative’s apparent voice, using photographs, recordings, letters and messages. That is an AI simulation—not biological cloning, resurrection or evidence that a person’s consciousness has been transferred into software.
The headline appears to describe a category of digital-memorial products. One aggregator identifies an allegedly controversial app called Vera AI, but that identification cannot be independently confirmed. The clearest currently identifiable example is Dead Talks AI: Loved Ones, an iPhone app that advertises conversations with AI versions of deceased loved ones.
Which app is the headline about?
“Vera AI” should not be treated as a confirmed product identity. An indexed aggregator page describes Vera AI as an app that allegedly recreated friends or relatives, but it does not establish the developer, original announcement, technical operation, current status or the source of claims that people were horrified. The name is also ambiguous: unrelated products use Vera for relationship coaching, financial services, life assistance and deepfake detection.
The strongest available product evidence is the U.S. App Store listing for Dead Talks AI: Loved Ones. It describes a “Memory Vault” and conversations based on photos, voice notes, letters, emails, text messages and other user-provided material. There is no evidence that this listing and the reported Vera AI app are the same service.

What “clone” means in this context
“Clone” is marketing shorthand, not a scientific description. A memorial app can combine several separate technologies:
- Text persona: a language model prompted or adapted with biographical details, writing and messages.
- Memory retrieval: software that searches stored documents or recordings for relevant facts.
- Voice imitation: synthetic speech generated from recordings.
- Visual avatar: a photograph, animated face or generated video.
- Conversation layer: new sentences produced in an approximated style.
The result may resemble a person’s vocabulary, tone and known stories, but resemblance is not identity. The app reproduces traces from a digital record; it does not preserve the person who created that record.

How a digital memorial conversation works
- The user uploads or enters material such as photographs, audio, letters, emails, texts and biographical notes.
- The service stores, indexes or sends some of that material to an AI system.
- The system extracts patterns: names, relationships, recurring phrases, speech characteristics and facts about the person’s life.
- A language model generates a response to a new question. It is composing an answer, not recalling a lived experience.
- An optional voice or avatar presents the answer as if it came from the deceased person.
That process explains both the intimacy and the danger. A response can combine a genuine family detail with invented language, an incorrect date or a wholly fabricated memory while sounding confident and familiar.
Why the reaction can be so disturbing
Recognizable surface, absent person
A familiar face or voice with no actual agency creates an uncanny mismatch. The system can imitate mannerisms without having the person’s consciousness, private point of view or capacity to consent.

Grief and emotional vulnerability
Someone mourning may interpret a generated sentence as a meaningful message, return to the service repeatedly or keep paying to maintain access. Those are plausible risks, not proof that every user is harmed. A product should never imply that its output is communication from the dead.
Consent after death
The deceased cannot approve a replica, the use of their voice or image, disclosure of private correspondence or commercial use of their identity. Living relatives may also appear in the uploaded material without having agreed to its processing.

For Dead Talks, the App Store privacy label says the developer may handle photos and videos, audio data, emails or text messages, other user content, contact information, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics and purchase history. Apple states that these disclosures come from the developer and have not been verified by Apple. The listing does not, by itself, answer whether uploads are retained indefinitely, used to train models, shared with third-party AI providers, removed from backups or exportable if the company closes.

Failure modes families should expect
- Hallucinated memories: invented names, events, opinions or family history.
- Emotional misfires: cheerful, accusatory, romantic or otherwise inappropriate replies.
- Identity drift: a persona changing when the app, prompt or underlying AI provider changes.
- Privacy exposure: sensitive recordings and correspondence entering a commercial or third-party system.
- Impersonation: realistic audio or video used to deceive relatives or fabricate statements.
- Dependency and lock-in: emotional attachment or recurring payments needed to keep access.
- Shutdown and disputes: loss of a memorial, or conflict over who controls the source files and generated persona.
- Security breach: concentrated databases of voice data, family photographs and private messages are attractive targets.
Can these tools ever be useful?
Yes, if they are presented honestly as memorial software. Potentially legitimate uses include organizing family stories, preserving a voice recording, creating an interactive archive for descendants and documenting a person’s life for a memorial or educational project.
A private, non-generative archive is often safer: it stores original photographs, recordings, letters and videos without fabricating new statements. It offers less novelty but avoids making invented words appear to be something the deceased actually said. Human grief support—such as a licensed therapist, bereavement group, hospice organization or community counselor—is a different form of help and should not be presented as interchangeable with an AI app.
Checklist before uploading family material
- Does every screen clearly say the replies are AI-generated?
- Does the service avoid claims of consciousness, resurrection or supernatural contact?
- Can living contributors refuse use of their voice, image or messages?
- What data is collected, where is it stored and which processors receive it?
- Can you delete uploads, derived profiles and backups, and obtain a usable export?
- What happens to the archive if the company shuts down or changes its AI provider?
- Are subscriptions, cancellation and refunds unambiguous?
- Does the service warn users not to rely on outputs for legal, medical, financial or family decisions?
- Are there age limits, crisis resources and controls to disable voice or visual realism?
- Can the family preserve the original recordings independently of the vendor?
The bottom line on “talking to the dead” apps
No evidence supports the claim that these products contain a deceased person or transfer consciousness. They generate plausible new responses from supplied data and may wrap those responses in a familiar voice, face or persona. That can help some families organize memories, but it can also blur the line between an authentic archive and an invented conversation. Treat “clone” as a sensational label, verify the product’s identity and policies, and judge the service as an AI simulation—not a return of the person who died.
