CNX Software reported a direct-store price of $38.99 on October 14, 2026. Its combination of 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, IEEE 802.15.4, industrial wired interfaces and a ready-made display makes it unusually capable for a small HMI prototype—but the preview-only software status matters if you need a production-ready platform.
What the VIEWE ESP32-S31 board includes
The board combines a display, wireless radios, expansion connectors and audio hardware on a 105 × 67 mm PCB. The front panel is a 4.3-inch IPS TFT with 800 × 480 resolution, 400 cd/m² brightness and capacitive touch handled by a GT911 controller.

Why Wi-Fi 6, Zigbee and Thread in one board matters
The radio mix covers more than ordinary Wi-Fi dashboards. Wi-Fi 6 provides the network connection for cloud services or local IP devices, Bluetooth 5.4 supports nearby peripherals, and the IEEE 802.15.4 radio is the low-power link used by Zigbee and Thread. Matter can run over Thread or Wi-Fi, so the hardware combination is suitable for experimenting with a multi-ecosystem smart-home controller. The published specifications establish radio capability; they do not establish certification, interoperability testing or a finished Matter product.

Software status: powerful hardware, preview-stage workflow
ESP32-S31 is described as a preview device. CNX Software reports that it can currently be programmed only with Espressif’s ESP-IDF framework, using the ESP-IDF master branch with the --preview flag. The cited material does not claim Arduino support for this board.
VIEWE supplies examples covering LCD output, touch input, ES8389 audio playback, SD-card access, RS485, CAN and a complete LVGL factory UI. Those examples can shorten the path to a demonstrator, but they do not turn preview silicon into a stable production SDK. Expect API, toolchain or documentation changes as ESP-IDF support matures, and plan time to maintain your own fork or adapt application code.

Power, wiring and setup considerations
- Provide a regulated 5 V supply through USB-C. The published draw is typically 320 mA and can reach 500 mA with the backlight on, so a marginal USB port or cable can cause resets.
- Use the BOOT and RESET controls and the USB-C serial-debug connection during firmware development.
- Budget for a microSD card and suitable speakers if your project uses storage or the onboard audio path; neither accessory is included in the published board specification.
- For RS485 and CAN installations, design the required transceiver wiring, termination and protection around the target bus. The presence of a terminal block does not by itself define a complete industrial interface design.
- Keep the stated −20 °C to +70 °C operating range in mind when selecting an enclosure and power supply.
How it compares with other ESP32 display options
The ESP32-C6 and ESP32-C5 families, as well as ESP32-P4 paired with a radio device, can be sensible alternatives, but the right choice depends on the complete board rather than the chip name. Compare these points for the exact candidate:
- Display diagonal, resolution, brightness and touch controller.
- Whether Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only or includes another band, and which Bluetooth and 802.15.4 features are implemented.
- Actual Zigbee, Thread and Matter software support, not just a radio listed on a datasheet.
- CPU architecture, clock rate, SRAM, PSRAM and flash.
- RS485, CAN, USB OTG, microSD and GPIO availability.
- Audio codec, microphone, amplifier and speaker connections.
- SDK maturity, examples, documentation and long-term update policy.
- Power draw, physical size, environmental rating and total accessory cost.
This board’s differentiator is the number of these functions delivered on one small PCB. A simpler C6 or C5 touchscreen kit may be easier to support if you do not need wired industrial buses or 802.15.4, while a P4-based design may be preferable when application-level compute is more important than an integrated low-power radio mix. The published material contains no head-to-head benchmark, latency measurement, battery-life result or failure-rate statistic.

Is it ready for production?
Not on the evidence currently available. The ESP32-S31 is explicitly a preview device and the board’s documented workflow depends on the ESP-IDF master branch with a preview flag. That is a strong fit for developers evaluating the silicon, building a proof of concept or validating a product architecture. A production design should wait for a stable SDK and silicon status, then repeat compliance, thermal, power, wireless-interoperability and long-duration testing on the final hardware.
For an early prototype at a reported $38.99, however, the board offers a rare combination: a usable 4.3-inch touch UI, substantial memory, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, 802.15.4, industrial buses and audio on one development platform.
