Third-party bike insurance is the legal minimum for riding on public roads in India, but it does not pay to repair or replace your own bike. A comprehensive (package) policy adds own-damage cover to third-party liability. You can also buy liability-only cover and a separate standalone own-damage policy. Choose by comparing the protection, IDV, deductible, exclusions, add-ons and policy periods—not just the premium.
What each type of bike insurance covers
IRDAI states that “Third Party Liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles plying on public roads in India.” The requirement is for third-party liability cover: protection for liability to other people for injury or damage for which you are responsible. Policy documents may call liability-only cover “Act Only” cover.

| Cover choice | What it generally covers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party / liability-only / Act Only | Liability to others; it does not itself cover damage to your insured bike. | Liability terms, policy period, and whether you also need a separate own-damage policy. |
| Comprehensive / package | Third-party liability plus own-damage cover for the insured bike. | IDV, deductible, covered events, exclusions, add-on conditions and claim requirements. |
| Liability-only plus standalone own damage | Two separate policies: one for liability to others and one for own damage. | That both policies are in force for the periods you need, and how their terms, exclusions and deductibles fit together. |
These descriptions are general. The actual protection depends on the policy schedule and wording; a policy labelled comprehensive does not mean every loss or expense is covered.

The central question is whether you want protection only for liability to others or also want insurance for damage to your own bike. The legal minimum does not answer the second question for you.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Liability-only may fit if you are seeking the required third-party protection and are prepared to bear the cost of damage to your own bike, or have a separate own-damage policy.
- Comprehensive cover may fit if you want one policy that combines third-party liability and own-damage protection. Check which events it covers and what exclusions and deductibles apply.
- Separate liability and own-damage policies may fit if you prefer that structure, but check both policies’ dates and terms rather than assuming one keeps the other active.
IRDAI advises comparing three or more quotes. Compare the actual cover and terms alongside the total premium; a lower price can come with a higher deductible, lower coverage or lower IDV.
What to compare in an own-damage policy
IDV: the insured value of the bike
The insured declared value (IDV) is the sum insured for own-damage cover. IRDAI says it should reflect the bike’s current market value. A lower IDV can reduce the quoted premium, but it also means a lower insured value; do not choose it on price alone.

Deductible and covered events
Check the deductible—the amount you may have to pay toward a claim—and read which events are covered and excluded. The policy wording and schedule, rather than the product label, define the contract.
Add-ons and their conditions
IRDAI names nil depreciation, return to invoice and NCB protection as examples of common add-ons, but availability differs among insurers. They are extra cover, not an assumed part of every policy. Check each add-on’s eligibility, limits, exclusions and price in the actual wording.

Why premiums differ—and how NCB works
IRDAI says third-party liability premium rates are laid down by the regulator, while own-damage premiums for similar cover differ across insurers. Factors it identifies include vehicle age, claim history and IDV, as well as discounts or loadings. A universal current price cannot be inferred from those factors; compare quotes for your bike and circumstances.
No Claim Bonus (NCB) rewards a claim-free previous policy period. IRDAI describes it as applying to the own-damage premium, not the liability premium, with a range starting at 20% and rising to a maximum of 50% over successive claim-free years. NCB belongs to the insured person rather than the vehicle. IRDAI says it can be used with a new insurer at renewal if the rider provides evidence of entitlement. Check your renewal notice or get insurer confirmation for your actual NCB; the general range does not establish your individual entitlement.

New-bike policies: check the two cover periods
IRDAI’s guidance describes a five-year third-party term for a new two-wheeler. Under the bundled option it describes, the third-party section runs for five years while own-damage cover lasts one year. That means the owner may need to renew own-damage cover while the long-term third-party section is still active. Check the policy schedule and current requirements for the actual policy you buy.

A practical comparison checklist
- Confirm the third-party policy period and that it meets the legal requirement for your road use.
- Decide whether you need cover for damage to your own bike; if so, check whether it is bundled or provided by a separate own-damage policy.
- Compare IDV, deductible, covered events and exclusions in the policy wording.
- Check any add-ons individually, including eligibility, limits, exclusions and price.
- Compare at least three quotes for the same bike and broadly equivalent cover, and note the renewal dates for each policy section.
Rates, products and exclusions can change, and insurer wordings differ. The current schedule and policy wording govern the cover you purchase.
