SpaceX is moving Starship’s Kennedy Space Center launch site from major construction toward acceptance and operational testing, but Pad 39A was not yet reported activated and no first Florida launch date had been announced. SpaceX said it planned at least one more Starship test flight from Starbase, Texas, before the vehicle’s Florida debut.
Is Pad 39A ready for Starship?
Not yet, based on the latest reported update. Space.com reported on October 7, 2026, that the new launch tower was nearly complete and most essential construction had been done. The work was beginning to move into acceptance and operational testing, steps that precede activation; the report did not say those tests were complete or that the site was activated.

At an October 1 briefing, SpaceX director of NASA science and Dragon programs Julianna Scheiman said, “Things are going super well at 39A.” She added that the initial build of the structures and systems was largely done and that the team was beginning acceptance and operational testing before activation. Space.com reported her remarks.
When will Starship launch from Florida?
SpaceX had not announced a target date for the first Florida flight. The October 7 report said the company planned at least one more Starship test flight from Starbase before launching from Kennedy Space Center, making Flight 16 the earliest possible Florida flight in the sequence it described—not a commitment.

Provisional planning documents cited in the report listed October 19 and October 30, 2026, as possible no-earlier-than dates for Flights 15 and 16, respectively. The report cautioned that these dates might be aspirational. A no-earlier-than date is not a confirmed launch time, and neither date established when Starship would fly from Florida. Why is SpaceX rebuilding Pad 39A?
Starship’s launch and recovery approach calls for infrastructure unlike the arrangements used by SpaceX’s Falcon rockets. Starship consists of the Super Heavy booster and Ship spacecraft; both are designed to return to the launch pad, where the tower’s arms can catch them. That plan requires a purpose-built tower and supporting ground systems, rather than relying on the sea or nearby-pad landings used by Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy.

The propellants also differ. Starship’s Raptor engines use liquid methane and liquid oxygen, while Falcon engines use rocket-grade kerosene and liquid oxygen. Starship therefore needs dedicated propellant storage and handling equipment, including a new tank farm. Space.com describes the vehicle as about 408 feet (124 meters) tall.

How the Florida site fits into Starship’s flight program
Space.com reported that all 14 Starship test flights before the expected Florida debut had launched from Starbase, and that the September 28, 2026 flight reached orbit for the first time. Those are the report’s dated flight-history details, not an independently corroborated status update.
The work at 39A is also part of a wider Space Coast buildout. The report says SpaceX is preparing SLC-37A and SLC-37B at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for possible Starship operations. It further reports that the U.S. Air Force had permitted Starship launches from those pads and that the pair could eventually support up to 76 liftoffs per year. The permission and potential capacity are claims attributed to Space.com, not a complete official readiness assessment.

The report also says Ship is planned for NASA’s Artemis III, which it described as a planned 2027 Earth-orbit docking test between Ship and NASA’s Orion capsule. Mission dates and architecture can change; consult current NASA material for the latest plan.
