Thiele–Small parameters describe a loudspeaker driver’s electromechanical behavior and help predict how it will work in an enclosure. They are design inputs, not a recipe: enclosure volume, bass target, usable frequency range, crossover, and the intended application all affect the result. “High fidelity” also reaches beyond a driver’s measurements to the sound a listener considers the right reference.
What are Thiele–Small parameters?
Thiele–Small parameters are characteristics used to model a loudspeaker driver, particularly its low-frequency behavior. Manufacturers publish them so designers can compare drivers and simulate how a driver and enclosure may work together. The parameters describe the driver; they do not, by themselves, describe a finished speaker system.
A design process therefore starts with the intended system rather than a single attractive driver value. The patent describing one design outlines setting target characteristics, calculating preferred values, selecting a suitable bass driver, checking its midrange behavior and likely usable upper range, matching other drivers, choosing crossover filters, and designing an enclosure. The patent is an example of a design method, not a universal prescription.
How do the parameters inform enclosure choice?
Use the driver’s published parameters as inputs to a system-level decision. The goal is to find a workable match among the driver, enclosure, and desired low-frequency response—not to maximize one number in isolation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start with the application and bass target. A design intended for one low-frequency goal or use may not suit another.
- Consider enclosure volume alongside driver characteristics. The patent’s sealed design, for example, sets a volume below 300 liters and specifies ranges for compliance volume, system compliance ratio, reference efficiency, and total system quality. Those are criteria for that proposed design, not general limits for speaker building.
- Check the driver beyond its bass behavior. Its midrange response can affect usable upper range and beaming, which in turn influence the choice and matching of other drivers.
- Include the crossover and the complete system. A successful enclosure choice has to fit the frequency range and integration goals of the other drivers.
Total Q can help frame enclosure selection, but it is not an absolute rule. A driver-selection guide makes that qualification and notes that other parameters matter too. Treat it as supporting guidance, not a substitute for evaluating the full design.
Why one “good” parameter cannot guarantee a good speaker
A driver does not operate in isolation once installed. Its behavior interacts with the enclosure, the target response, the rest of the frequency range, and the crossover. A value that seems favorable in isolation may not suit the volume or response the application calls for. The patent’s multi-stage process illustrates why selecting a driver is only one part of system design.

The patent also describes candidate professional bass drivers from 15 to 21 inches. Those sizes and its other stated criteria belong to that particular proposed high-fidelity design; they are not recommendations for every enclosure or room, nor evidence from an independent comparison test.

Technical design can aim for neutral, predictable reproduction, but listeners may disagree about what sound should count as the reference. In a February 1968 HiFi/Stereo Review article, James Goodfriend discussed whether the reference is a live performance from a particular seat, the sound captured by microphones, or the producer’s chosen recording. That distinction helps separate measurable system behavior from the more interpretive question of what a recording should sound like.

Goodfriend used six listening dimensions to explain stereo reproduction. They are historical explanatory categories, not a contemporary standard or a measured ranking of speakers:
- Pitch: whether low and high notes are proportioned appropriately to the midrange.
- Dynamics: the range of loudness and changes in intensity.
- Depth: the front-to-back impression.
- Directionality: the perceived spatial location of sounds.
- Ambiance: the acoustic environment suggested by the reproduction.
- Timbre: an instrument’s tone color, shaped by its harmonics and noise.
In a statement reported by Lenard Audio in October 2014, Dr. Floyd E. Toole, identified there as Vice President of Acoustical Engineering at Harman International Industries, Inc., argued for neutrality: “Loudspeakers are the single most important element. They influence the art as it is being created. And in that process loudspeakers need to be neutral. If they are not neutral then they become part of the art.” Lenard Audio’s report is the attribution for this quotation.

A practical way to use driver specifications
- Define the job. Set the intended low-frequency target, application, and usable frequency range before choosing a driver.
- Compare a complete set of parameters. Use the published figures to evaluate likely driver-and-enclosure behavior; do not select on one value alone.
- Evaluate the rest of the system. Check midrange behavior, potential beaming, other drivers, and crossover needs.
- Model the enclosure as part of the system. Judge volume and predicted response against the design target rather than treating an example from a patent or guide as a universal rule.
- Assess fidelity in context. Technical neutrality and listening impressions are related, but the listener’s chosen reference—live sound, captured sound, or the production—also shapes what “accurate” means.
