These Powercfg Commands Help Explain Why Your PC Wakes at Night or Won’t Sleep

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your Windows PC wakes unexpectedly or refuses to enter sleep, start with built-in powercfg.exe diagnostics. Use powercfg /lastwake to inspect the most recent wake, powercfg /waketimers and powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to check two possible wake sources, and powercfg /requests to investigate what may be keeping the PC awake. These commands provide clues, not a guaranteed diagnosis; first check which sleep states your particular PC supports.

Why does my PC wake up at night?

A scheduled wake timer and a device configured to wake the PC are different possibilities, so check them separately. Before changing anything, note when the unexpected wake occurred. Compare that time with command output, and change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affected the behavior.

1. Check the PC’s sleep states

Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run:

powercfg /a

This reports the sleep states available on the machine and may explain why other states are unavailable. Use the result to establish whether the PC supports traditional S3 sleep or Modern Standby; the distinction matters because the available diagnostics and behavior differ. For command details, see Microsoft’s Powercfg command-line options and its overview of power management.

2. Inspect the most recent wake

Run:

powercfg /lastwake

Microsoft defines this command as reporting “information about what woke the system from the last sleep transition.” It concerns the most recent transition, so it may not explain an earlier overnight wake or a recurring pattern if the PC has slept and awakened again since then. Treat its output as a lead to investigate, not a verdict.

3. Look for active wake timers

Run:

powercfg /waketimers

This lists active wake timers. If one appears, note the requester, expiry time, and any named task, then investigate that task before changing settings. Windows can use real-time-clock events to wake a system, but a listed timer does not by itself establish that it caused the wake you noticed. Microsoft documents wake-event details for S3 sleep and S4 hibernation; do not assume that description covers every Modern Standby transition. See System Wake-up Events.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation gives a Windows 8 regular-maintenance wake as an example of a timer-related wake. That example is historical context, not evidence that maintenance is the current or universal cause on Windows PCs: Desktop wakes up unexpectedly from sleep or hibernation.

4. Check which devices are allowed to wake it

Run:

powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

The result lists devices currently configured to wake the system. A device appearing in the list means it has wake capability enabled; it does not prove that it caused the unexpected wake. If other evidence points to a listed device and you are willing to prevent it from waking the PC, disable that ability with its exact displayed name:

powercfg /devicedisablewake "device name"

Why won’t my PC stay asleep?

A wake event is not the same thing as a power request. If the PC will not enter low-power sleep, or the display does not turn off automatically, inspect requests rather than treating a wake source as the explanation.

Check applications and drivers with active requests

Run:

powercfg /requests

This lists application and driver Power Requests that can prevent automatic display-off or entry into low-power sleep. Investigate the named requester and what it is doing. A request is evidence of activity to examine, not proof that an application or driver is faulty.

Microsoft’s guidance notes that a system-required request held indefinitely can prevent sleep and drain battery on a Modern Standby device. Applications should clear a request when the work requiring it is complete. For the underlying behavior, see System Sleep Criteria.

Which report should I use for Modern Standby?

If powercfg /a indicates that the PC supports Modern Standby, use SleepStudy to examine session activity. Microsoft recommends it as a starting point for Modern Standby diagnostics: Tools available.

Generate a SleepStudy report

Run:

powercfg /sleepstudy

The command creates an HTML report. Its default interval is three days; to examine a longer period, specify a duration in days, up to 28:

powercfg /sleepstudy /duration 7

SleepStudy reports session activity, idle time, power consumed, and first-level information about activity causes. Use it to compare activity and timing with the behavior you observed, not as automatic proof of a root cause. Microsoft describes the report and duration options in Modern standby SleepStudy.

When are the broader power reports useful?

Microsoft also documents two reports that can help investigate system behavior beyond an individual wake or request:

  • powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics reports periods when the user was absent and whether the system slept. It requires an elevated command prompt.
  • powercfg /systempowerreport creates a report of system power transitions.

Check Microsoft’s command reference for the selected report’s syntax, output location, and elevation requirements.

How do I find out what woke my computer?

Choose the command that matches the question you are trying to answer:

Question Command or report What it examines
Which sleep states does this PC support? powercfg /a Available and unavailable sleep states
What woke it most recently? powercfg /lastwake Information about the last sleep-transition wake
Is a scheduled wake timer active? powercfg /waketimers Active wake timers
Which devices are configured to wake it? powercfg /devicequery wake_armed Devices currently enabled for wake
Why might it not sleep or turn off the display? powercfg /requests Application and driver power requests
What activity occurred during Modern Standby? powercfg /sleepstudy Modern Standby sessions and activity

Command output from your PC is necessary to identify a likely cause. No specific timer, device, application, driver, or update can be named without that evidence. Match timestamps and requesters to what you observed, then investigate the strongest lead before changing settings.
