It is a preclinical prototype—not a consumer battery and not something people should swallow outside a controlled medical study.
What the prototype is designed to do
The 2026 study in Nature Chemical Engineering describes a paper-like galvanic cell intended for short-lived medical electronics. An ingestible capsule could use the cell while it identifies, tracks, stimulates or senses something in the gastrointestinal tract. Once its job is finished, the battery is designed to degrade so that retrieving a powered device is unnecessary.

The reported cell combines an AZ31 magnesium-alloy anode with a paper-composite molybdenum-trioxide (MoO3) cathode. An ionic-liquid gel serves as the electrolyte. Beeswax and candelilla wax encapsulation slows contact with gastric fluid, allowing the cell to function before fluids gradually reach and degrade its internal materials.
The measured peak open-circuit voltage was 1.84 volts. In demonstrations, the battery powered an RFID tag used to track an ingestible medication capsule and supplied energy to a degradable capsule that delivered gastric electrical stimulation in swine models.

How long it works before breaking down
Operating life depends on the encapsulation, electrode geometry, electrolyte, salt concentration, pH and the task assigned to the capsule. In the reported gastric tests, wax-encapsulated cells retained their structure for up to three days and operated normally for about three days in a highly acidic solution.
After that period, output declined. The study describes a drastic performance decrease after roughly one week of gastrointestinal exposure, linked to several simultaneous failures:

MIT’s account of the work says the cells broke down completely within a few weeks. “Complete breakdown” describes loss of the battery structure and function; it does not mean that every atom instantly disappears or that any ingestible electronic device is automatically harmless.
What “bioresorbable” means in this context
Bioresorbable materials are selected to degrade under physiological conditions into products that the body can process or eliminate through normal pathways. The researchers chose magnesium and molybdenum compounds partly because both elements are present in the body and diet in small quantities.

The study compared estimated dissolution products with daily intake values of 420 milligrams of magnesium and 2 milligrams of molybdenum. Those figures are study-context comparisons, not established safe doses for swallowing this battery, and they do not account for every possible formulation, dose, patient condition or degradation product. The work remains preclinical: swine experiments and laboratory testing do not establish regulatory approval or unrestricted human use.
Why this is not the same as swallowing a button battery
Ordinary button and coin cells are engineered to remain intact, store energy densely and deliver current for consumer products. If one becomes lodged in the esophagus or gastrointestinal tract, its electrical and chemical reactions can cause rapid tissue injury, perforation or a fistula. Clinical references warn that damage can progress even before obvious symptoms appear.

In an in-vitro study of retained batteries, almost all tested cells leaked by four hours, with leakage increasing over time. Conventional lithium, alkaline, silver-oxide and similar button cells therefore must never be treated as substitutes for the laboratory battery described here.

Why the chemistry must match the mission
Separate galvanic-cell experiments under simulated gastrointestinal conditions show why there is no single ideal ingestible battery. Magnesium is advantageous when a device needs short-term operation. Zinc or AZ31B magnesium alloy can be better suited to longer operation. Platinum and palladium cathodes can produce high peak power, while molybdenum offers a lower-cost option for transient electronics.
Electrical output also changes as the capsule moves through the digestive tract. Performance declines as pH rises, and cells are less efficient in intestinal fluid than in gastric fluid. Designers must therefore match electrode size, cathode material, salt concentration, encapsulation thickness and expected residence time to the capsule’s job. A tracker that needs a brief radio transmission has different requirements from a stimulator that must deliver controlled pulses for hours.
What the demonstrations prove—and what they do not
Demonstrated capability
- A reported peak open-circuit voltage of 1.84 V.
- Temporary operation in acidic, simulated gastric conditions.
- Powering an RFID tracking tag on an ingestible medication capsule.
- Powering a degradable gastric-stimulation capsule in swine models.
- Structural retention for up to three days under the reported gastric conditions, followed by degradation over subsequent weeks.
Important limits
- No evidence in the supplied study establishes routine human implantation or swallowing outside a trial.
- Material-intake comparisons are estimates, not a clinical safety guarantee.
- Battery output falls as electrolyte, encapsulation and electrical connections degrade.
- Behavior can differ between laboratory fluid, a swine digestive tract and a human gastrointestinal tract.
- The work describes a custom research platform, not a retail replacement cell or consumer ingestible-electronics kit.
Where this technology could be used
If later studies establish reliable safety and regulatory compliance, transient batteries could support medication-adherence tags, short-duration gastrointestinal sensors, diagnostic capsules and electroceutical devices. Their value is greatest when a capsule has a defined task and a defined operating window, after which leaving no retrievable battery is preferable to a permanent power source.
The central engineering challenge is balancing power and lifetime against controlled degradation. Encapsulation that is too thin may cause premature failure in the stomach; encapsulation that is too thick may delay breakdown or prevent the capsule from delivering enough power while it is in the body.
