These Gadgets Were Hyped as the Next Big Thing—but Was the Skepticism Justified?

For Google Glass, RED Hydrogen One, PlayStation VR2, Microsoft Surface Duo, and Magic Leap One, the skepticism had a concrete basis: ambitious ideas came with trade-offs in price, usability, software, or long-term support. That does not make every product worthless, or prove that its entire category is doomed. It does show why a compelling pitch is not enough to make a gadget practical.

What made these gadgets so compelling—and so vulnerable to doubt?

Each product promised a new way to use technology: a computer worn on the face, a phone with a glasses-free 3D screen, immersive console VR, a dual-screen smartphone, or mixed reality in a headset. The skepticism was less about whether those ideas sounded exciting than whether the devices could deliver a useful everyday experience for their cost.

The five products span different categories and years, so they are not direct competitors. Their common thread is a gap between an ambitious promise and the practical questions a buyer has to answer: What does it cost to use? What software works on it? Are its distinctive features convincing? How long will the product and its services be supported?

Where the skepticism came from

Google Glass: a wearable idea with visible trade-offs

Google Glass was introduced in 2012, with the Explorer Edition arriving in 2013 for $1,500, according to Eduardo Ariedo’s BGR feature syndicated by Yahoo Tech. The feature describes limited battery life, difficulty of use, sparse app support, and a conspicuous design. Its camera also raised privacy concerns: recording from a device worn on the face could make other people uncomfortable, quite apart from whether the wearer found it useful.

Those criticisms should not be confused with the later enterprise product’s support status. Google says it stopped selling Glass Enterprise Edition on March 15, 2023, and ended support on September 15, 2023. Existing devices and software could continue to be used, but Google planned no further software updates; the Meet on Glass app could stop working at any time after support ended. That announcement applies to Enterprise Edition, not automatically to every original consumer Explorer device. Google’s Enterprise Edition FAQ gives the lifecycle details.

RED Hydrogen One: a premium price tied to an unproven screen

The Hydrogen One launched in 2018 at a reported $1,295. Ariedo’s feature characterizes its glassless 3D display as underwhelming and its hardware and camera as disappointing for the price. It also reports that planned modular accessories never reached the market and that RED abandoned the project and a second generation. The account’s price and product-performance judgments come from that feature; the cited sources do not include a separate RED product document substantiating them.

PlayStation VR2: a headset whose real cost included its platform

The feature puts the PS VR2’s launch price at $550 and argues that the need for a PlayStation 5 increased the cost of entry for anyone who did not already own one. It also points to a limited available VR library, no backward compatibility with the previous generation, a later price cut, and reduced first-party support as reasons for caution. These are the feature’s assessment of the product and its market context, not a sales or adoption measurement.

PC use later became possible through a separate Sony PC adapter. Sony announced that the adapter could let players access SteamVR titles, and Sony product manager Yasuo Takahashi said it could help players “expand their game library with thousands of SteamVR titles.” That is Sony’s promotional description of PC use, not a claim that the games come with the headset. The adapter is a separate accessory; Sony’s announcement explains the arrangement: PlayStation VR2 is getting PC support.

Microsoft Surface Duo: two screens did not erase the software question

The Surface Duo launched at a reported $1,399 with two AMOLED displays joined by a hinge. Ariedo’s feature says the software and performance did not make the dual-screen concept convincing, and points to missing NFC and 5G as hardware omissions. It characterizes the phone as failing to gain traction and says Microsoft left mobile hardware in 2023. Those launch-era specifications and lifecycle judgments are reported by the feature; the sources cited here do not independently establish them against Microsoft documentation.

Magic Leap One: a costly mixed-reality system with practical limits

Magic Leap One was released in 2018 at a reported price of about $2,295. The feature identifies a limited field of view, a few hours of battery life, a tethered external unit, and a small app library as shortcomings. Those constraints matter because they affect where and for how long the device can be used, as well as what a buyer can do with it.

Magic Leap’s support page gives a clear endpoint for Magic Leap 1: it reached end of life on December 31, 2024. The device and apps reached end of life, its cloud services became unavailable, and it no longer receives OS updates or Care support. These are specific support consequences, rather than proof that the device became unusable everywhere on that date. Magic Leap 1 end-of-life information lists the changes.

PlayStation VR2 $550 (launch price, as reported by the BGR feature) PS5 requirement, library limitations, no backward compatibility with the previous generation, and reduced first-party support PS5 needed for console use; PC use requires a separately sold adapter. What these examples say about hype, price, and product value

Sticker price is only the starting point. A device may also require a host platform, an extra accessory, software that is available and useful, or services that remain supported. The PS VR2’s PS5 dependency and separate PC adapter make those additional costs especially visible; Google Glass Enterprise Edition and Magic Leap 1 show why support duration and cloud-service availability belong in a retrospective, too.

Just as important, a headline feature has to work well enough to justify its compromises. A 3D display is not automatically valuable because it is unusual; two screens do not automatically make phone software better; and a wearable or mixed-reality headset has to fit how people actually use a device. Across these examples, the skepticism was reasonable when the practical experience, available content, or ongoing support did not match the scale of the promise.

That conclusion is limited to these products and the shortcomings reported for them. It does not establish that all AR, VR, dual-screen, or experimental devices are destined to fail, and the cited sources do not provide comparable sales or adoption figures for the five products.
